watched his podcast, they did discuss the new macbook pro and that a review is being done but did not provide a timetable for completion. i wonder how much longer the wait will be.

Essentially Anand said that while general UI performance (Mission Control, scrolling etc) has improved (in part thanks to Mavericks), its not perfect. Looks like we have to wait for the review before we hear about other aspects of the machine.

so the CPU + GPU aren't fast enough again to use that display or is it that Mavericks code isn't 100% performing right? Sad thing Apple, release half working computers...*sigh*

I wonder which model rMBP Anand will be reviewing. I'm assuming it will be the higher end model with the 2.3 i7, 16gb RAM, 750M, and 512gb SSD.

But since I have the 2.6 with 1tb SSD I would prefer him to review that model. Of course it won't happen, since its pretty much just a BTO option, and so there won't be as many users who opted for it. I guess I'll just read the 2.3ghz review and just assume the CPU speed is marginally higher.

They already confirmed via Twitter that it's the 15" 2.3GHz/16/512/750M.

I emailed him a week ago, after his tweet regarding the 15". He never responded, but "busy" is probably an understatement for him. Can't wait.

Lol why would people who have the machine be so desperate about a review of a machine they already own.

Because they want to be told how to feel about their machine

It's called "being insecure and needing the validation of an authority figure in order to feel good about themselves."

I'm not immune to this myself... but I do recognize the absurdity of it.

(In my defense, my new MBP hasn't arrived yet so I do still have a vested interest in knowing what I'm in for...)

Honestly I'm interested in some of the technical "goings-on" of Iris Pro + 750M. Of course I'm not worried about actual performance (that much will be obvious coming from a 2008 iMac lol), but the iGPU+dGPU implementation is quite interesting.

Lets give them some time so they won't write stuff like in iPad Air review and calling its IGZO display a "standard IPS".

Absolutely! I also look forward to seeing how the new machines hold up to his extensive tests. His reviews are pretty hard to beat in that area.

Ultimately, it's not like there's anything about these machines that's objectively "worse" than the previous generation, so early adopters don't have much to worry about on that front. It's pretty much a given that Anand will call it something along the lines of "a small improvement on a great computer", which is exactly what it is.

Zing! Hey, nobody's perfect... ;)

Chalk it up to Apple's secrecy, and to the fact that IGZO displays apparently look exactly like IPS displays, for all intents and purposes.

I still find it super strange that Apple failed to even mention this in any of their sales literature.

best macbook review.

But on the apple website it also states that the iPad air has "just" a display with LED backlight and IPS technology...wouldn't they advertise this new IGZO technology?

who is anand

is he some kind of god or something

I've never heard of him

He's a popular tech journalist and founder/owner of anandtech.com. Anandtech does extensive reviews for both corporate and consumer tech products.

He isn't a god nor should he be regarded as one. As with all journalism, AT errs on the side of timeliness versus accuracy. Though you would be in for thoroughly entertaining and informative articles should you decide to read AT.

oh thanks, it sounds interesting especially based on the last part :D

i will have to read it

Because most of users don't give a damn about which technology it uses. As long as it's smaller, and it retains the battery life is more important.

Do you find them bragging about how big the chip fabrication node for the A7 is? No. Do you find hem advertising the name of the GPU they use? No. They advertise the effects which are faster graphics and better battery life. Very few people care about how it got there.

still waiting on pins and needles. i wonder if he knows how many people are waiting.

I know this propably wasn't the reason for Apple's omission, but still: technically those displays are IPS (in-plane switching), they just use IGZO (indium gallium zinc oxide) as the TFT (thin film transistor) material, rather than the currently more common a-Si (amorphous silicon).

Apple seems to advertise only those technologies that they have self developed or acquired exclusively, or if they are the first using it in a released product.
