I think we'll see a significant update with the next model. It would have been three years since the last major change, the introduction of the Retina display. Since then all we've got is spec bumps.

802.11n -> 802.11ac
Thunderbolt -> Thunderbolt 2
SATA SSD -> PCIe SSD
650m -> 750m
Iris -> Iris Pro
Ivy Bridge -> Haswell

There hasn't been a new feature. And when June 2015 rolls around that'll be 3 years exactly since the last major update.

I don't think we'll just get another GPU + CPU spec bump. I think we may see TouchID make its way over to the Mac and it would tie in well with a preview of the next version of OS X 10.11 which is expected to be shown at WWDC if they keep their cadance.

My prediction, Retina MacBook Pro refresh, perhaps even introduction of this MacBook Air Retina (Like they did in 2012's WWDC with a few hardware updates across the notebook lines). Then they'll show off a preview of 10.11 that uses the new TouchID sensor and some other general changes and a preview of iOS 9.

Admittedly I've been wrong before but this time I got a feeling! :D

They might release it in Spacegray too... To keep it in line with their other mobile devices.

I'd love to see a on/off button with integrated TouchID. Place your finger on it, instant unlock, the same for buying things in the App/iTunes store or login in to various sites or Apps (think of your Mail, calendar, etc.)

Touch ID won't happen until they can integrate it into the trackpad. Having to press the on/off button every time you want to unlock your laptop from sleep, or make a purchase, it a usability/ergonomic car crash. The reason it works so well on iPhone/iPads is that you won't have to change your behaviour to use. The same cannot be said for MacBook Touch ID until it can be integrated into the track pad

They could integrate it into the touchpad. Into the corner or something.

Or they could make it look invisible ! which can be summoned on a magic spell/mantra !! How about that ? :rolleyes:

Are you guys Nuts ?? Touch Id on Mac I guess that day Johnny Ivy and rest of the Apple Technical Team should quit Apple and should start their quest in search of the sage way of life !!

What Nonsense ?? Touch Id on Mac it even sounds rubbish !! forget implementing it !! Apple in so fierce competition of Laptop Touch screens has not even brought the Touch screens in the Mac Line Up, how do you guys think they will implement the touch Id on the Mac !! :p Totally Bulls-it !!

What will the improved be with the new Macbook Pro Retina compared to the current model?

What needs to be improved with the new Macbook Pro Retina?

From what you've read in this thread, what improvements would be in a "Top 5" list?

My two big questions about the next iteration of MBP:

1. Will Broadwell's upgraded Iris Pro graphics have any effect on the ability of the lower-end 15" to run a 4k monitor as an extended desktop? Based on what I've read in other forums, it sounds like it can work on current MBP's but it's a little sketchy. This is must-have for me (working with a lot of excel sheets and photographs), so I need it to work well and reliably.

2. Any chance that 512 gb will be standard in the lower-end 15"? It's hard to justify paying $2000 for a system with such so little space.

Thanks!

1-for day to day things, sure..4k absolutely not for gaming...movies should be adequate (i may be wrong on the movies part..but i doubt it)
2- absolutely not

Thanks brah. I'll be doing day-to-day photography, excel sheets, etc. I'll have tons of windows open, dragging them around both screens. Won't be doing any gaming. However, I forgot to mention that I'll be viewing 4k footage from my GoPro, and doing basic edits with their app. Within the next two years GoPro will go to 4k at 60 frames per second, so I need to be able to work with that as well. Can the current MBP handle that, or should I wait for Broadwell, or wait for Skylake?

Do you guys agree, that atleast by January the smoke will get clear and there will be some visibility on the future as in what are some realistic rumors on when is the estimated time by which Apple will release Broadwell rMBP ? Will there be some clarity from the rumour mill by January on this ?

I feel confident Spring will be for a new MacBook Air Retina based on Broadwell, and Fall will be for new MacBook Pros based on Skylake (which may well be wireless). MBA becomes the super mobile laptop and MBP becomes the super powerful laptop such that the two lines are fully differentiated.

So you are saying Macbook Pro will have Skylake and MacBook Air would have Broadwell . so there will be no Broadwell for Macbook Pro. Well it sounds like a good idea but also sounds wishful thinking !!

The reality is that since Broadwell has had so many delays and Skylake is on time the two are butted on top of each other unlike preceding Intel processing chip generations. With MacBook Air Retina being the focus in Spring such that it will need to use Broadwell, Apple might as well have new MacBook Pros for Fall use Skylake.

This is not wishful thinking. No reports have suggested new MacBook Pros in Spring. So if they are coming in Fall, Apple might as well use Skylake for them. And, again, it provides a benefit of further differentiating the Air and Pro lines of Apple laptops.

What does WWDC have to do with Broadwell Macs? How often do they hold an event to announce faster processors in their Macs? Such refreshes are usually rather quiet.

The refresh could coincide with the event and go unmentioned. Maybe tacked onto the end of it? Or maybe the rumored 12" MacBook Air Retina will be the star of the show?

They are Not Holding the Event to Announce a new MBP. They hold the event to announce the new Mac OS and iOS. During that event they may or may not announce a ridiculous update like what they just did with the Mac mini.

For me the upgrade I am interested in is a quad core CPU in the 13". That would bring a performance jump. Everything else is meh.

So does that mean that we can expect the Broadwell MBP yearly 2015? I was wondering, because I want to buy one before April 2015, when I graduate and will not be able to claim education pricing :/

Since Apple does not requires proof that you are a student to get the discount (at least online), you may benefit from the discount at any time.

Skylake delay rumors

There are a few rumors that Intel may delay the launch of Skylake for one to two quarters for commercial reasons, so as not to cannibalise Broadwell sales.

If the delays were proportional across all of the various processor series, then we might expect to see Skylake-H (or whatever the quad-core mobile range is called), to be pushed back to early 2016.

I've pretty much decided to give Broadwell a miss, and get a new Haswell MBP now.

But you still need to be a student or a recent grad to have the required .edu email address, don't you?

If someone has not taken the plunge by now and is not in any urgent need of a computing device, is still worth a wait for Broadwell I would guess !! Anytime before or by June looks like a very promising date for the rMBP's to come out with the Broadwell Processor.

This thread had been going on for almost a year and a half and there's been no hard evidence that MBP is updating with Broadwell. By the time they come out with it, it will be outdated...lol.

Just had a look at the retina iMac's display upgrades (not the resolution, I mean oxide TFT, high-efficiency LED's, organic passivation, photo alignment, compensation film), and it sounds like Apple has made some major strides. Can these display upgrades be implemented in a MBP retina display? If so, it appears that the display would be 30% more energy efficient, and would have much higher image quality. Also, did they thin down the display? If they did, and can thus thin down the MBP display, it makes sense that they'd do the same for the chassis as a whole while they're at it.

I know nothing about the actual tech behind these things. Someone smarter than me: let us know what you think.

Don't know if I should wait or just buy now. My early 2011 15" is going to die anytime now. I've already had the logic board replaced once and now the battery is dying. I have the money for an rMPB 15" but wanted to wait until spring for the new models but I'm unsure if they'll even have them out then. Should I just buy now?
