Don't know if I should wait or just buy now. My early 2011 15" is going to die anytime now. I've already had the logic board replaced once and now the battery is dying. I have the money for an rMPB 15" but wanted to wait until spring for the new models but I'm unsure if they'll even have them out then. Should I just buy now?

I'm in a similar boat except I have a MacBook Pro early 2009. I'm leaning towards the rMBP 13" fully loaded. But I don't know if I should wait for next year or not. I'm a developer though so I rely on my MacBook for everything and I'm tired of it being an issue.

Thinking about just buying now. Don't think any new ones will be released in the spring. I know I want to 15" but don't know if I need the one with a dGPU. Im going to start programming classes soon but don't know if a dGPU is necessary; is it?

Ogre - why do you think they won't release new ones in the spring? I'm on a 2007 blackbook, and I'm eagerly awaiting an update in the spring :(

You know what, I'm not sure haha. I think I just tell myself that they aren't coming out in the spring so I can buy one now. Realistically I believe there will be an update this coming spring.

Well wait, according to this https://www.macrumors.com/2014/07/09/broadwell-early-to-mid-2015/ Broadwell for 15" rMBP wont be available until July 2015 at the earliest... I might as well buy now.

Ughh I hope that's not true...I don't know how much credence I'd put in that now though, it sounds like Intel is going to announce Broadwell chips for MBP's at CES, which is on Jan 5 - 7: http://wccftech.com/intel-launching...es-2015-feature-intel-iris-graphics-6100-gpu/

It may still be that they won't be available until July, but it sounds like we'll know for sure in Jan...hopefully.

We'll see I guess. I'm hoping for an update soon. I know my laptop can probably make it another year or so but it'll struggle to do so.

Broadwell is not a single release

There are at least 3 major release schedules for Broadwell portable CPUs:

Broadwell-Y (also known as Core-M) - 3-6W ultra-low power mobile CPU for tablets and 2-in-1 hybrids (e.g. Lenovo Yoga) - already released, products available this year.

Broadwell-U: low-power CPUs (15W) for MacBook Air and similar ultrabooks, and 28W parts for the rMBP 13 - To be launched January (estimated) - In products maybe Feb-Apr 2015

Broadwell-H: high-power quad-core laptop CPUs (rMBP 15), launched June/July, in products maybe Aug-Oct 2015.

Do you know if there will be notebooks with Skylake? Or will that processor be desktop only? Might as well wait a couple of months for Skylake if there is a refresh with this processor.

Yes, I understand that there will be same laptop CPU ranges for Skylake as for Broadwell and Haswell. However, there have been some (unsubstantiated) rumours that Intel may delay Skylake by 1 to 2 quarters for commercial reasons, so as not to cannibalise sales of Broadwell.

Depending on which laptop you're interested in, this could push some models into 2016 - e.g. if a Broadwell rMBP 15 is release is September, we might not a Skylake version until almost Q2 2016. The MBA & rMBP 13 would be maybe 6 months earlier.

In any case, I think you will wait at least 6 months before any Skylake Macs become available. This may change though!

Bummer. Hopefully we'll at least find out with some level of concreteness at CES.

In the meantime, here's some fun food for thought I found on Reddit. Assumes that the power consumption in a MBP is 35% CPU, 35% display, 10% GPU, 20% other hardware.

"(35% CPU x 70% power consumption because of Haswell) + (35% display x 50% power consumption because of IGZO) + (10% dedicated GPU x 70% power consumption because of Broadwell) + (20% other hardware x 95% power consumption because of general technology advances).
In other words, that's 25% CPU + 18% display + 7% GPU + 19% other hardware. That's only 69% of the power consumption of current rMBPs.

Current rMBP 15" officially comes with 8 hours of battery life (although this seems like a conservative estimate in my experience). Using just 69% of the battery juice, this extends to a stunning 8 / 0.69 = 11.6 hour battery life. But we also assumed battery capacity per lb would increase 5% before the 2014/2015 rMBP comes out. This takes us even further, to 12.2 hours of battery life in the current rMBP form factor."

Thoughts?

Hmm yeah heard about the possible intentional delay. Looked into it a bit further and saw that Intel CEO said that they weren't delaying Skylake; hope everything goes as said.

Yes, it's just a rumour - but this is the place for them! However, it would be odd to find Skylake on the market within the same quarter as brand new Broadwell machines. If I were Apple I'd be wondering whether anyone would actually buy a Broadwell Mac if they knew Skylake was only a couple of months away.

There is a real possibility that Apple would simply skip Broadwell in some models (probably the rMBP 15 using Broadwell-H), and go straight to Skylake. They presumably have a direct line to Intel's release schedule, and would know whether the two generations are likely to launch close to each other.

I reckon if we see a Broadwell rMBPs, then Skylake will be delayed - if Broadwell launches an no new Macs appear within a month or two, then they'll move to Skylake in Q3/Q4 of 2015.

There are no rumors of new MacBook Pro Retinas being readied for early 2015. What seems to be in the process of being readied for early 2015 are MacBook Air Retinas, which will be forced to utilize Broadwell.

With Skylake being on time for second quarter 2015 and no pressure to produce new MacBook Pro Retinas anytime soon, I agree it makes sense for Apple to skip Broadwell with MacBook Pro Retinas and put Skylake in them for Fall 2015.

Having MacBook Air Retinas with Broadwell and MacBook Pro Retinas with Skylake also further differentiate the lines, which is desirable for marketing.

The next rMBP update could have an AMD dGPU? In the past Apple used nVidia for 2 years then ATi for 2 years and went on like that for a bit

I think I've made the decision that I'll hold out for Skylake chip rMBP next year unless this MBP just dies on me. I've been able to manage some of the issues better as of late.

I'm really not feeling good about dropping $3K for the top of the line rMBP only to be limited to 16GB for audio work. That's not "Pro" in a lot of people's minds. Also eyeing the MP but once you add the display etc it gets expensive. And I'd have to add a retina display for my other Photo work. I couldn't just go out and get a cheap $300 display for audio.

My question is will the upcoming rMBPs have a processor capable of 32GB RAM? When do you think Broadwell rMBPs would be released?

That is on Apple, the current Haswell quads used already support 32GB of ram.

Skylake + DDR4 may see 32GB rMBP

Really? Wow

Even more pissed

16GB max for a pro laptop? Whatever.

The problem is that the current (and foreseeable) rMBP design only has space for 2 SO-DIMMs, which currently limits you 2 x 8GB (I think it may be technically possible) to get 16GB DDR3 SO-DIMMs, but I've never seen of any.

Other workstation-grade laptop manufacturers Dell, HP, Lenovo have space for 4 SO-DIMMS, so already support 32GB RAM.

DDR4 memory, which although supported by Broadwell, will probably only start to get market penetration (and price reduction) with Skylake, at which point 16GB SO-DIMMs will become more widespread (although I expect them to be initially expensive).

TL;DR if you need a laptop with 32GB get a Lenovo, Dell, HP, get a desktop, (e.g. Mac Pro) or wait at least a year.

Been away from these forums for a few months. Sad to see that no new information is available - the leaked roadmap that showed quad core Broadwell being delayed until Q2-2015 already surfaced in May after all.

My main concern right now is the outdated GPU in the high end model. 850M/860M should offer much better performance/power ratio, so either better graphics performance or improved thermals and noise. Unfortunately an upgrade of the GPU before Broadwell seems unlikely.
I enjoy some casual gaming, but I don't want a separate gaming box. Leaves me looking at the iMac...
