what would allow for longer battery life on average?

Iris Pro 5200 or HD 4600 + dGPU (assuming you can use gfxcardstatus & disable dGPU to increase battery life)?

Would it be the HD 4600 + dGPU combo (with dGPU disabled)? Or would it be the Iris 5200? Or would they be about equivalent?

I have a very cursory understanding of this, but given that both the 4600 and 5200 are integrated into a max 47W TDP CPU, the power consumption should be relatively similar, even though the Iris Pro is significantly more powerful and efficient than the 4600.

So it does make sense to go iGPU-only if Apple chooses to focus on battery life as the primary selling point for the new line, although this would mark the first time I can recall where they won't be able to use a tag line like, "The Most Powerful MacBook Ever" to describe a new MBP release.

Again, I'm semi-resentful that my personal MBP "purchase cycle" has landed me here, as all signs point to Broadwell being the refresh that's truly worth waiting for--given the expected 30% speed/efficiency boost, the increased likelihood of IGZO displays, etc.

For anyone here old enough to remember three years ago, I suspect Haswell to Broadwell will resemble the shift from dual-core Arrandale to quad-core Sandy Bridge, whereas this refresh will be much more like Sandy Bridge to Ivy Bridge. In other words, nothing to write home about.

I'm sure they'll still be awesome computers, though! ;)

Wow, the difference with a 5 years old machine will be massive (I guess).

I'm not only talking about the performance. Consider the non-mechanical HD (super resistant and PCIe!), the size and weight, the quality of the screen, the battery life...

oh my god shut up i'm already antsy as it is! that's exactly why i've stayed out of this thread lol.

Sent my girlfriend to an Apple Store today to have a look at the current rMBP.
My next laptop is now officially girlfriend approved - yay! :)

(bad side is that she wants one too now...)

I'm still on my very first macbook pro... a late 2008 core 2 duo. I'm itching for an upgrade after all this time ugh. Can't wait for these Haswell machines and I'll be ordering the top end retina the moment they're available.

Are we expecting them during the "iPad Centric" event coming up? I've been keeping out of this thread on purpose because I'm so impatient.

Im on the same version..so many years we have endured! ;)

Mine has been upgraded to it's max possible spec. I have an SSD and 8 gigs of RAM and recently replaced the battery. The SSD changed things a lot but this machine is only capable of SATA II speeds so I'm only getting about half the disk speed I paid for. Still a massive improvement over the stock HDD.

It's much faster than when I got it but my dad got a non retina-mbp last year and it's just insanely fast in comparison. Even with an HDD on his.

Finally, this thread is over 500 pages, so I can jump in.

I'm ALSO waiting for a Haswell MBP. Did I miss anything?

Yeah it's not so fulfilling to buy the latest and greatest when the "next big thing" is already on the horizon. One of my favorite things about apple products is how well they hold their resell value. This makes it easier to deal with upgrading quite a bit if you are a nut like me.

Unfortunately I jumped the gun at the June 10th announcement and sold a week before it.

Newcomer to this thread. Having skimmed a few pages of this thread it sounds like there's a consensus that Apple will NOT release a Haswell MBP Tuesday. Can someone simplify as to why?

Thanks.

Reasons:

- no rumors (except two irritating benchmark leaks earlier this year)
- Apple waits for IGZO availability
- Intel had production/yield problems delivering a special over clocked Iris Pro version as Apple requested
- Intel has problems releasing Thunderbolt2 this year. I'm worried about MacPro too.
- No time! The year is pretty much over. Managing pre x-mas logistics is too tricky and/or expensive.
- Weather. Due to the heavy storm in Japan some crucial parts are probably delayed.
- Intel decided to delay the Broadwell node, marketing-wise delaying Haswell artificially will help to extend the Haswell lifecylce further.
- the infamous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities is wrong, again :D

Even if Apple decided to hold back IGZO for future Broadwell macs, the TB2 port and o/c'ed Iris Pro iGPU are probably the two major reasons why MacBooks are delayed until February 2014. I believe Intel is to blame for the 2014 shift.

Aww yea !!!! Just found my school has no classes on Tuesday for fall break!

I'll get watch the show ! Or at least the live blogs.

The person you quoted asked about reasons why a release might not happen on Tuesday. Your answers are (whimsical and fanciful) reasons why there won't be a release this year. I'll happily wager any amount of money that there will, in fact, be a notebook refresh before this year is out. I think/hope you're trolling, but just in case you aren't...

I'd gladly bet against the pessimists too if there were a system in place for it.

Is anybody organizing peaceful protests incase the Macbook Pro is not announced?

Count me in folks.

For all of the pessimism/optimism, my belief is if the updated MBP doesn't make it on Tuesday's agenda it is because they have too many other things they want to feature. If it isn't announced, don't panic - wait to see if it gets a silent release in the few days afterwards. The iMac had a silent release to the Haswell processors the Tuesday after the new iPhones went on sale. No mention at the iPhone event, but the update still happened.

So, if the new iPads ship on Friday November 1 (best guess based on past patterns) if you don't see a MBP silent release by November 5th, then you might start to panic/protest.

But hopefully, it will be on stage Tuesday! I am on an early 2008 15" MBP - I need an upgrade!!!

We have missed your logical presence.

+1 to this. I'd literally bet my left arm you see new models by Thanksgiving. People get too obsessed about the meaning of events but seem to forget that a lot of incremental updates are announced with nothing more than a press release.
