the next few days could be today, tomorrow, early next week

they just did not come out and say today incase something happens at the last minute with the release. they dont want to get peoples hopes up. thats why they said couple of days; incase its not ready.

certainly hope it's sooner rather than later. can't restore (getting an unknown error) and the official fix isn't working either. and they don't seem particularly apologetic about it either.

Companies have to be very careful with what they say. Apologizing can be used against them if a lawsuit were brought up against them in the future regarding this issue, and you know how sue-happy the USA is.

That's why they will rarely apologize, and almost always just tell people what happened and fix the issue. Apple is one of the least yappy companies around, and often won't even say what's going on! I'm glad they at least fessed up to this.

to be fair, they apologized. they just didn't make it sound like it was anything more than a typical minor bug. and as for fessing up, they didn't really have a choice. it's not like they could have honestly blamed anyone else or ignored it. it would be nice if they did something for the folks who've experienced this issue, because it's major. but i'm not holding my breath. i'll be happy if they fix my phone in the next 48 hours at this point.

I downloaded ios 8 into my 4s. And now with the update, even thou my phone tells me that an update is available I get a message saying that I must be on the internet to download BUT I AM ON THE INTERNET and the update will not download.

This. Users unable to dial 911 in an emergency is a BIG deal.

Absolutely true.

But the OTA is update is a convenience feature and you have to think the process through on how critical your phone is to you at a given point in time in the future if the OTA fails; and can't be easily restored.

You might want to think through, for example, doing a full backup and then having iTunes install the update at a time when you didn't need to call 911 for a period of time.

It is possible an OTA could bork the phone for a myriad of reasons beyond this specific last incident. So if a mission critical item for you is calling 911, then you think through the ramifications of having an OTA fail. It's on your shoulders, not apples to ensure you follow best practices.

First off, I've been using iPhones since the 3GS and NEVER had an OTA fail. Second, it IS on Apple's shoulders when THEY released a faulty update.

Its beyond a convenience feature, it's a basic feature. Especially when it's all set up to be completely computer free as many people actually end up using their iOS devices.

Apple stock is down 4%, that is worse than the iCloud nude pic scandal.

But Tim Cook is smart, he sold off a big load of his stock a few days ago.

How could they roll out an update when you can't even get sync'd from yesterdays fiasco? Did the restore and been trying to get sync'd for over 16 hours.

You still have to think it through. A computer free user still has to follow a best practices for them. Make sure wifi is available and an iCloud backup is available. Operating system upgrades can cause issues on every computing device.

WiFi would need to be available for the download anyway for OTA and having an iCloud backup is something that would be available for a lot as well, but neither would do much with issues like this where cellular is essentially disabled and you are basically stuck.

Apple stock is up and down all the time, this isn't even a blink for it. There's nothing good here, but it's far from some sort of doom and gloom that some keep on making it out to be. It's fun for some to scream and shout that the world is ending, but it doesn't result in anything useful.

with this being a major issue you would think they could get this out ASAP

i thought i read they where working on this around the clock till its fixed.

hopefully before the weekend so today or friday

We're coming up on 10AM Pacific. I think it's probably 50/50 that we'll see 8.0.2 in 20 minutes or so.

No, it's not like they have iOS 8.0.2 ready and just waiting for 10AM Pacific to release it.

Exactly, I bet only a few people slept yesterday, they are working on this full time.

The announcement saying in the next few days makes me skeptical they will release one today at 10.

Could just be a precaution though

Haha... If you search back in this thread you'll find a quote from me saying exactly that same thing. But after apple's statement about the issue and the fact that said it may be several days it makes me think that they are treating it less like the emergency I thought it was and more like a normal release.

it's probably not today.. maybe they are still fixing or testing the update to make sure this doesnt happen again.

Surprised they didn't hot fix it and release it yesterday. I still don't get how an issue like this gets by the software team and the carriers.

I think they'll just release this one when it's ready and not stick to tradition (10AM).

so it could be released out of the blue tonight at midnight if its ready?

No not that late. Latest they've done an update at is around 8 PM Eastern

No, it's not like they have iOS 8.0.2 ready and just waiting for 10AM Pacific to release it.

That's the case with about 99% of updates they release. Do you think they just happen to be have every update ready at 10AM every time? No, they have it ready prior to their planned release date and release it at 10AM Pacific.

Then maybe one needs a computer. As the possibility always exists, as evidenced by the odd threads around here regarding O/S updates, that an update can bork your phone; those who would lose the most due to inappropriate timing need to be less cavalier about hitting the update button.

YOU may never had an update fail, but they do as I noted above, based on threads here.

So you still need to be judicious when applying an update.
