I've made a quick chart of people who switch to the iPhone 4S or iPhone 6

iPhone 4 -> iPhone 4S = Most ridiculous person ever. Get a life.
iPhone 3GS -> iPhone 4S = Somewhat ridiculous, unless you NEED the camera.
iPhone 3G -> iPhone 4S = About fricking time. How did you last so long?
Android -> iPhone 4S = We were wondering when you'd find your way home.

iPhone 4S -> iPhone 6 = We told you to wait, knucklehead.
iPhone 4 -> iPhone 6 = A natural progression. You're normal.
iPhone 3GS -> iPhone 6 = Master race of iPhone consumers. Can't be beat.
Android -> iPhone 6 = Master race of new iPhone converts.

Ok, I'm this guy^^^^^^^^^^^^^^highlighted.
But the list is a little harsh don't you think.
I mean, 3gs to 4s is a big jump. I know some who had a 3gs and when they used mine, its was a wow factor, and for me it was a OMG factor, how did you use this everyday.
Also, even coming from the 4 to 4s, its twice as fast in graphics and computing etc. It is noticeable. It wasn't ground breaking, and I wouldn't have paid full retail for it......but I don't see it being retarded upgrading at contract price.
Here it is. I got the 4s and when the 5 is here, about 2 months or less after its release, I'm available again for the $199 upgrade.
So yes, if the 5 is a nice upgrade.....i.e 4G or something similar, I'll drop $200 so I can enjoy the new features.....simple as that.
But its not crazy. Whats crazy is dumping 4s after 1 month and spending $800 just to get the 5.

Doublecheck because I believe ATT has gotten rid of annual upgrades

I have a 3GS with 5.0.1, works fine. Obviously you can't do the more intensive stuff but it will do the job for the vast majority of iPhone users.

I think i'm going to skip the iPhone 4S mainly due to battery issues. By the time iPhone 5 gets released, the battery issues should be fixed and Siri should be out of Beta hopefully. Good idea?

I've had every model of iPhone to date.

Your idea is ideal.

Do not second guess it, wait for iPhone 5. :)

My contract is in for renew Jan 8Th. However I'm thinking the same thing even if I have to wait till the fall. I still happy with my I4 and I have a feeling if I get the 4S now I have regrets when the next model comes out.

Or you could do what I did today. I paid out of pocket($475) for a mint 4S off of Craigslist today so I don't lose my upgrade next year. I figure that if I decide to upgrade late next year, I will be able to recoup most of the money that I paid today.

My vote goes to wait for iPhone 5 and keep the iPhone 4 if you have one. I am running iOS 5.0.1 on mine and it is great. Same brilliant battery life as on 4.3.3 and no slowdowns at all, the 4 is pretty good performance wise.

While on commutes i have thrown almost every high end 3D game on it (except for infinity blade 2) like real racing 2, shadowgun, gta3, gangstar rio, modern combat 3 etc and it runs all of them without a complaint. I have no regrets on not jumping on the 4S bandwagon. Ill get the 5 or a nokia WP with apollo depending on what comes out first.

Ah waiting for something we have no clear date on is silly. When the 5 comes out ill sell my 4s and just pay the difference

Infinity Blade 2 runs fine on the i4 also graphic wise and story wise much better.

I was 1 year into my 2 year agreement with Sprint with a 2 year old HTC Evo. Then Sprint did that end of year promo allowing people to upgrade early before the new year, so I did that and got the 4s.

Sold my Evo on craigslist for $200, so bought the 4s virtually for free.

When the 5 comes out, I'll sell the 4s for $200+ and just buy the 5 on craigslist for $400-$500 probably without extending my contract.

I have to wait 6 months to go on contract lucky my contract ends on a new design I can live without the new tech in S version i can't live with a different different but thats just me :)

its going to a big a year with a possible iMac redesign

Great idea, so long as you're holding an iPhone 4. Skipping the whole 4 series would be a mistake. But I'm likeminded. I don't care about Siri and I shoot pictures with a professional dslr, so the 4s is silly to me. Yes, the iPhone 5 will be worth standing in line for.:)

I can agree if you have a 4, and your available for upgrade late January, Id save it and wait for 5 as well.

But I wouldnt expect the 5 to be a revolutionary break through.
We're at a point right now with technology in smartphones where things are starting to plane out.
We've seen screen size battle....all be it, not in Apple.
I am cool with the screen size personally.
But there comes a point when that must stop....we're reaching Tablet proportions now.
We've seen the move to Dual Core for most every manufacturer.
Of course next will be quad core trying to one up each other.
Aside from adding 4G, really not a whole lot Apple can do thats gonna be ground breaking.

It may have cosmetic redesign.....but what's it supposed to look like.
They made a round, beveled edge, now we have more square and edgy.
Do they go back round again. Really?
Kinda like car cycles. We saw rounded edges, then we saw real hard edged lined front/sides, now they are heading back to round.
Only so much you can do

I wouldn't mind quad core, but only if the battery world had some ground breaking revolutionary break through....cause that processor would wreck today's battery for sure.
To me, a Ground Breaking new iPhone would be one that got 2 full days of hard use no matter what.
That's revolutionary. And that would only happen if they chilled on the one up the competition game. Keep same size screen etc so we don't offset gains made.

I guess we'll see a:
4G(although as someone already said, I hope its user switchable) and still may not see 4G if the network drama isn't worked out,
4" screen.....
If they change it, I hope they keep Retina. I hate Amoled screens in Samsung. Yes the colors are all punched and blacks are deep.
But it has an ugly green cast that's been well documented and the colors just aren't natural. And with blacks on Samsung, quite often we lose all detail in the blacks. They clip that channel to the point a black shirt or tux is just a big black blob with no detail.
I like Apples color management.

Design Something i between of iPhone 3 design and 4s
More RAM, faster
Faster Flash memory, perhaps standard 32g
A tweaked faster version of Dual core.
Touted new State of the Art Battery
Siri tweaks
All standard, upgrade stuff. I wouldn't bank on anything so big that everyone dumped whatever phone they had and paid any price to get it.
Although, I'll buy the 5 if any one of those features are present. I don't mind dropping $199 to have the latest greatest new features. I enjoy them.
I wont pay retail though....forget it.
A good friend/coworker just shelled out like $800 for the new Galaxy Nexus Verizon just released.......HES NUTS:eek: To each their own:)

I'm with Photogdave. We chatted this upgrade a bit on the samsung fascinate forums... I'm glad you made the jump, Dave!

As an aside, I just upgraded my old fascinate to 2.3.5 (leaked version not OTA) and rooted it. I think I may switch my wife onto this just so we have wifi teather and other features of a rooted droid. Still haven't seen anything that makes me regret my decision to jump to iPhone 4s!

I too am eligible for an upgrade on verizon at any time ( I used my wifes upgrade to get my 4s. My line is still eligible.). I plan on getting the 5 if it's enough of an upgrade from the 4s.

Yeah, I'm not sure what I'm gonna do with mine. I know I'm gonna make them replace it, because nothing I do will make it run right.
It is under warranty.
I think I gotta keep it, because my 7yr old daughter loves playing Angry Birds and a motorcycle game on it. It is another means to internet on wifi.
She thinks she has a touch screen phone now....god help us all. Just like her daddy.
I don't have the heart to trade it in for what little $$$ they give me or sell it for $$$ vs keeping her happy.
But I sure hate to waste a new Smartphone.....what to do what to do.

5 iPhone 4S with in the family and running well :)
Sold my wife's 4 for 400. and found like new 4S for 500., 100 for an upgrade is cheap, you just have to be patien when buying and selling.

I have an iPhone 4 and I'm going to wait. There's not enough improvements to the 4S to make it worth the money, in my opinion.

Yup, that's what I'm waiting for. My iPhone 4 is fine, and I'm betting that we'll have a full Siri port by the end of February and to be honest, Siri (and the camera) is the only thing the iPhone 4S has over the iPhone 4, or at least in my opinion. I'll wait for the iPhone 5 or 6 or whatever it's called. My iPhone 4 is fine for me. :)

I was talking to Sprint Retention the other day, basically found out that if you call to cancel your account because you aren't eligible for your upgrade - depending on the last time you upgraded - they may allow you to upgrade for a $45 early upgrade fee, in addition to any activation fees - as a save tactic so you don't leave for a competitor.

I'm sure this is at the discretion of the customer service rep you speak with, and I'm sure a lot will depend on your early termination fee (and its prorated amount remaining).

for me it's also about the jailbreaking iphone 4 has the limera1n exploit. allowing me to always at least have a tethered jailbreak. just some things I'd rather not give up.

I spoke with a few sprint retentions people and apparently that program has been ended a few months ago.

Why not just get the 4S now and then sell in by the time the next iPhone comes out?? That's what I would do...
