And FYI, I believe I read that the 179 just got killed for computers for small businesses in the tax bill ...?

FYI, a quick follow-up on this comment. As per a Forbes report .. Google Cache here, since the original doesn't seem to be loading:

Business fixed investment

  • Small business "Section 179" expensing increased to $1 million and expanded to more items.
  • {other items}
  • The maximum allowed depreciation deduction for autos is increased, and computer equipment is removed from listed property.

(end quote).

As always, check with your personal Accountant on all tax matters ...

Nevertheless - my understanding of the "Listed Property" provision is that it allows for partial write-offs on stuff that has a mixed Business/Personal use. As such, this elimination appears to screw over the small/independent shop who can't afford to have two separate computers (one for business, one for personal) by denying them the 179 write-off.

The not-so-bad news is if your Mac is unquestionably 100% used for business purposes only, this change shouldn't have a negative effect - - you should be able to continue to use the one year write-off provision of the 179.

...although do keep in mind that there are other (pre-existing) tax rules for when equipment under 179 gets retired/sold, as it needs to be accounted for over its normal depreciation life and any revenue (even if you "give it to yourself" as personal property) eported as net business income -- apparently, any time before it is fully depreciated/written off (another tax homework assignment).

FWIW, this raises to me a new question which I've not researched yet, which is if the mixed (business/personal) use provision exists for conventional {multi-year, "not 179"} depreciation write-off exists or not: this might be a remaining avenue for the "single PC" small/solo businessman (i.e., of more of today's Gig Economy interests).

What if Apple came out with a 5k 120Hz display?

That would be dependent on LG since they are the sole manufacturer of 5K displays. Asus and Acer are planning to release 27" 4K@144Hz gaming monitors this year with pricing projected to be between $1000 and $1500 so I would expect a 5K@120Hz Apple monitor to have an MSRP approaching $2000.

5K@120Hz | 8K@60Hz requires DisplayPort 1.3 or higher so either monitor will only work with the new Mac Pro (assuming said MP has DP1.3+ and/or HDMI 2.0+).

Yes, most Intel chips since 1995 2008 are affected.... (Meltdown and Spectre)

Also all AMD and ARM chips affected (only Spectre)

Afaik only 10.13.2, and only against Meltdown.

Isn't that the really bad one? I'm getting confused reading about this whole thing. They keep saying most won't notice a performance difference but will in certain use cases but then they won't state what those use cases are. I know nothing about software development so a lot of the terminology is hard for me to understand.

you can put sub-10W cpus into this, along DDR4, flash storage, just look at the MacBook 12 logic board, barely the same size, also the PSU can be integrated into this tiny space, its technically feasible the concept, of course its unlikly Apple to put the TouchBar on nowhere else than the keyboard itself, else they need to re-design every mac to put the touch bar, while on the keyboard its available along all the desktops.

I'm intrigued about the Mac mini future, will be more mini? not so -mini? will be discontinued -right now its obsolete technically- ?

Next Mac Mini could be a keyboard, that houses a Mac. You could either plug it to a monitor directly or use airplay. It'd be like a small laptop without a display (except TouchBar). And a touchpad could be similar to Apple remote. It would be easy to use on your lap airing the screen to your tv. If you have AppleTV.

And that would not be many steps away from a iPad/Mac marriage. Mac Mini connected to an iPad. "A match made in heaven" as Apple could advertise...

Man that would be a throwback to like one of the first computers I used as a kid. I can't remember the brand, maybe a commodore. But it was a big as keyboard that you inserted big ass cartridges into. Everything was in the keyboard.

I doubt Apple to experiment with new (for apple) form factor, and this wasn't precisely successful, from the c64 to the Asus Keyboard-PC as it comes it goes.

The delayed touchbar should come as either a full keyboard or as touch-bar peripheral to attach either to the MagicKBD or the monitor, but I bet for the touchbar integrated to the wired or wireless magic keyboard now with buttefly switches, and available in white-silver or black-space-gray (only if you buy an iMac Pro)... LMAO...

This form factor was extremely successful among home users in the (slightly more than a) decade it was common. From the mid-eighties it didn’t even necessarily lead to donglemania, after storage units became small enough to fit in the case.

And ev

And even then there are no certainties that there will be news...

I hope to at least hear rumors, whisperings, or something along those lines between NAB in April and WWDC in June.
I imagine June reveal with a late 2018 launch like the iMac and Mac Pro before. Can't see them revealing the new Mac at NAB, only new software. Whether or not some people will be shown sneak peeks under NDA, I dunno.

Apple is receiving critics on how there are so few VR/AR apps yet, we know why there is such delay on VR/AR production, Apple will put theis money to solve this, I think the Mac Pro is a high priority H/W development project, Apple should introduce or sneak-peek it at NAB or at some Q1 event and release it at WWDC or early Q3, not later than that, it against Apple plans on VR/AR.

I think the Next month or just before current CES (as usual) Apple will leak something about the Next Mac Generation (maybe AMD cpu, or just some sneak peek on the Mac mini, next MBP, updated iMac (non-pro or just name all new Mac, 'iMac Pros', as the MBP, discrete SSD coming back to the MBP/iMac/mini).

The Steam VR store has a grand total of 1 VR utility app for Mac (Gravity Sketch), whose minimum system requirements is Vega 56, vs 128 Apps for Windows - where Nvidia laptops without eGPUs are capable of doing the job - hell you can get a dual 1080 laptop in PC-land.

Apple is going nowhere in this medium without Nvidia in laptops (because AMD can't get 3d performance/heat/power draw sorted), and slots in their desktops (because noone in their right mind is going to be on an annual workstation refresh schedule, just so they can use a Mac to run cross-platform apps).
