I do data recovery for a living and SSDs fail especially Sandforce based ones like Apple has been using lately so I'm very interested in being able to replace one without having to replace the logic board -- especially after the machine is out of warranty. If I can't, this will mean selling the machine as soon as 3 years is up instead of being able to hand it down to a family member or friend.

The other thing is that one will need to decide from the get go how much space they would ever potentially need in the machine if they can never increase storage. I have many clients who made mistakes when purchasing newer Apple laptops and Mac Minis thinking they would be able to eventually upgrade RAM and/or storage.

Additionally, I guess I'm old fashioned but a machine called Pro should allow for some upgradeability.

Guys, if I understand this correctly, every computer with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 is able to powered by it for up to 150W of power supply.

So if this is true, then only thing that could bottleneck the power consumption is Power Supply itself, and design of the computer.

I am genuinely wondering if this may mean that we might actually see higher powered components in next MBP, like for example RX 470. Full Polaris 10 in embedded market has 95W TDP, with fully reference(desktop) core clocks. Polaris 11, with 1.4 GHz boost has under 50W TDP. There are rumors that this may be because of new, different process than GloFo.

TL;DR - The important question is whether we will see more powerful parts in MBP. I actually would welcome this change.

USB-C can only provide up to 100W power (20V*5A).

it's an estimate anyway and you're not taking into account the vast cost of R&D that went into making the console. I'm sure that more than makes up for the $18 of difference during its first release. Also that's not accounting for the fact that retailers also make a profit, so Sony certainly wasn't selling it to them at $399.
R&D has nothing with losing on saling console my friend ;) These articles you quoted were before premiere and were hypothesis, wrong hypothesis. Sony didn't want to make the same mistake with ps4 as they did with ps3. And they succeded with this strategy as ps4 brought company to life again.

I don't know much at all about current gaming consoles but I think it would make a lot of sense to sell them at loss. There is pretty much nothing you would do with one other than buy games. Every game has to be either bought from their online store or as a propietary disk which they use to make their profit. If one console manufacturer starts to sell their device at a loss, it leaves no other option for their competitors as consumers will blindly compare the upfront costs of each. A rule of thumb would be to sell at 2.5 x cost of manufacture. I'm sure they currently are not even close to that.

They can use whatever branding they need to in a transitional period. We've been in this situation before in 2008 when the MBA was announced. There were three MacBook offerings. The MacBook (which was in the place that the MBA is in now) took more than three years to be discontinued.

MBA or no MBA, Apple needs an entry level laptop. My biggest gripe with the "MBA is dead argument" is that it's an incomplete thought. What do you think will happen? The 11" MBA is $899 and the MB is $1299. Price alone is only one factor, as these are vastly different machines.

If they discontinue the MBA completely, they just created a $400 cost of entry increase for macOS. It's pretty clear that the ancient cMBP at $1099 (which no one should be buying anyway) is going to bite the dust in October. So they either continue to sell one or both models of the MBA, refresh one or both, or if they discontinue they could do something like drop the 2015 13" MBP to $1000.

I think a refresh on the 13" MBA makes the most sense, and we've had plenty of rumors to support some MBA action.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for simplification of a line-up, and believe we'll get there one day, but you have to think practically.

I guess I just don't understand. If the MacBook isn't entry level, then what is it? The only way the MBA could be cheaper is if they don't give it a retina screen and I can't picture them doing that in this day and age.

I'm dismayed that you'd pass on a new MacBook Pro because you can't remove the SSD.

I'm dismayed that you wouldnt consider it a deal breaker.
For me, the only thing that got me to finally pull the trigger on a 2015 mbp was that owc and now transitl both offer ssd upgrades for those models.

The MacBook Air is complicated. I would like to see the MacBook Air updated. and I do feel there should be an in between laptop between the rMB and rMBP.

I don't think apple will continue the 11" MBA.

But I do not want to see apple continue to sell the MBA with its current screen. And do not think apple will.

But if they update the air to retina then I don't see how they could make it cheaper than the rMB.

It may be possible, that apple makes a computer similar to the rMB but has a 13 or 14" screen. and a 15W CPU with iris graphics. and maybe has 1TB3 + 1usb-c or maybe 1TB3/usbC + 1 USB A. and this computer would probably be called MacBook, but might be called MacBook air? But this computer would be higher end than the 12" MacBook.
[doublepost=1475254127][/doublepost]Also we are on page 1060, so that means the 2016 MBP will have a GTX 1060?

Some kind of metal detector/weapon detector.
Can't wait to hear about the lawsuit - how much this guy will have to pay though.

I saw this on youtube, just wanna share something

I know right, like what is that thing in his hand for? Is it used to spank the bad guys?

I know right? It doesn't even look like he's a security guard from the Apple store but from another shop next door? Either way he did ALOT of damage before any kind of security arrived, and then it seems like he stopped because he was done, not because security was there.
He was complaining about customer service and repairs...

The MB is an ultra-portable and making laptops ultra-portable requires an incredible amount of engineering and innovation. And that additional work means a higher cost. We've been through this already in 2008.

Think about broke high-school and college students. Not everyone is in the market for a MBP. How can you justify a $1400 machine with limited processing power, a single port, a 480p webcam, and aim it at the entry market?

Forget everything except for price, like maflynn said. A MBA is $899. That is an entry-level price. The Surface Pro 4 costs the same amount and you could argue it's a lot more versatile. Dell's offering is $100 less.

A MacBook Air is $999. A MB is $1299. There is no logical place for both in the line-up if the Air is updated to be better than the MB. I have a feeling it will just get a processor bump and maybe some USB-C love. The Pro 13" is not starting under $1599.

Apple may not be a company that wants to offer an entry-level laptop.

I have just confirmed with Serban that because of our momentous achievement in getting to page 1060, Tim Cook will personally install one of these in every Skylake macbook pro bought by users in this thread.

It will only add $1499 to the base MBP price too!

Hey Guys I don't think we are getting any macbook updates until we go to MARS. Strange but true. :(

Apple has been telling us for years but we refuse to listen.

Want to prove it to yourself ? Go here http://www.apple.com/mac/

What does it say in the Macbook Air section ?

ALL THE POWER YOU WANT. ALL DAY LONG.

*ALL THE POWER YOU WANT*. Apple assures us we would never want more power, and they have proven it by not upgrading their laptops for years. When that version of the Macbook Air was released it arrived on this planet in a perfect form. It is the prodigal son. Its bezels are a thickness that echo a renaissance golden ratio ideal of beauty and perfection.

*Maybe* if we go to Mars, which has a slightly different day cycle than earth, the "ALL DAY LONG" will no longer hold and thus finally Apple will have to admit the current Air isn't a *universe wide* rare example of perfection.

So we should all reset our anticipation clock. I take no pride in linking these two events together. We will only get new MacBooks once Elon Musk gets us to Mars. Looks like 2023 at the unlikely earliest.

This is Major Tim to Ground Control Mac Rumours Forum. We've Really Made the Space Grade Aluminum. You'll just never see it in a new macbook.
