If they did this, there wouldn't be much differentiation from the rMBP other than the retina screen, so Apple would cannibalize its own rMBP sales which in *your* scenario would have a HUGE margin of profit over the cMBP because the retina screen alone would be a ~$400 profit. Nobody would justify the 50% price jump to the rMBP if the internals of the cMBP are almost the same.

Not much different than when the 13" rMBP was first released, and at least now the 2015 13"rMBP would have battery life and faster SSDs. The fact that the cMBP is still around shows there's still plenty of market for such a machine like the cMBP, regardless of how much Apple wants to force super thin MacBooks and iPad Pros on the user base.

My main problem with the cMBP is the fact that they are charging $1100 for a 4 year old processor, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB 5400-rpm HDD, and a 1280x800 TN screen in 2016. Not so much the concept of the cMBP itself.

Have been lurking for a while, but decided I should finally join you all in this agonising wait!

I think, negatives aside, this is actually really exciting! When was the last time you were genuinely surprised by Apple? Normally we go into these events knowing everything and they just act as a confirmation of what was expected. This time, we are going in blind! Its like being a kid on Christmas morning!

I was thinking about this before, think i'm right in thinking the watch didn't really leak, not a full assembled unit anyway. Apple TV? Dont think many details of the remote etc leaked.

Its obviously much harder for the assembly line workers to photograph or sneak parts out for the laptops due to their size, there probably aren't as many people willing to pay for images like there are with the iPhone either.

Woah, this thread is going fast.
Since that picture of the Touch Bar being used for emojis, I'm actually really upset due to the actual likelihood of this happening...

What are you folks getting?

Thinking of getting the 256 GB 13" MBP (Space Gray or Matte Black, if Apple is following the iPhone 7 coloring scheme). That is, if it is unveiled on Oct 24.

If it's not coming this year I'll settle for the rMBP 12". Can't wait anymore.

256GB fully upgraded MacBook Pro. I'm hoping it's announced mid-October and purchases can be then made so it ships for late October. I can't wait much longer for one as my 2007 laptop is seriously falling apart and I desperately need a new one. Are there any leaks at all about when in October they might be or is it just that October 24th date?

Guys, if I understand this correctly, every computer with USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 is able to powered by it for up to 150W of power supply.

So if this is true, then only thing that could bottleneck the power consumption is Power Supply itself, and design of the computer.

I am genuinely wondering if this may mean that we might actually see higher powered components in next MBP, like for example RX 470. Full Polaris 10 in embedded market has 95W TDP, with fully reference(desktop) core clocks. Polaris 11, with 1.4 GHz boost has under 50W TDP. There are rumors that this may be because of new, different process than GloFo.

TL;DR - The important question is whether we will see more powerful parts in MBP. I actually would welcome this change.

The picture was amusing but lets be clear there is no likelyhood of it happening. People are absolutely fixated with the new messaging features being demoed at WWDC. WWDC is a developer conference, as a developer I can tell you there was nothing unusual or unnecessary about them updating the features and functionality of the most used app on their most used platform.

I honestly dont understand the need for the constant snarky comments.

I would have considered the idea if the chasis were to be thicker, but leaked photos show other wise. That and also their emphasis on battery life.

Finally someone showed 'em some COURAGE.

Quel con !
(what a cu$nt)
You could think it would be a grand political performance to object working conditions in China or something.
But no ! The guy is just pissed about not having had a refund for something ...

So what we DONT know about the upcoming MBP? the cpu, oled bar, ram, keyboard, thiner and lighter, ports? NO. nvidia instead of amd inside? NO so no surprises still...here im talking about MBP and not mac mini/mac/imac or 5k thunderbolt display

The DGPU is unused when its off. So it has really not much to do with battery.

I would agree in theory about the thickness, but the slips in MBPr have shown you can do thin chassis and quite good cooling system.

Apart from the leak which shows the chasis, cpu/ram/price/screen are all unknown. We have some very very good guesses as to what they will be (and we are most likely right) BUT, most of these are guesses. Unlike when the iPhone event comes out, you get internal assembly and even the full iPhone being leaked sometimes weeks and weeks in advanced. Compared to that, we are flying blind into the next event (we don't ACTUALLY know when it will even be), and I find this to be exciting!

Surely everything in the computer is unused when it's off?

Sorry for the pedantry, I couldn't help myself.

Surprise. All your ports are gone :-D
Big FU waving in your face.
That kind of surprise?

Surprise. We're still not actually updating the Air to retina and just removed all it's ports and stuck a Skylake in it.

Surprise. The MacBook Pro. We use Pro very loosely now a days and it will now be less pro than ever.
Surprise. After all that time we just threw in some already old Skylake chips, the MacBook keyboard, shaved .2lbs off, made them 5mm thinner, same bezel, same webcam, no ports, no magsafe.

No ill will towards you. Just having some fun with that Surprised comment.
Apple is surprising me lately alright. By doing things unbelievably poorly.

Why bother then? Buy a current model MacBook Pro or a Wintel machine. The future is coming whether you like it or not, get on board or spend it pining for USB A ports and Magsafe (neither of which will be found on any other laptop for much longer).

I've never followed a MacBook launch as intensely as this one. So, for the veteran MacBook followers in the crowd, it's been discussed how they've done a great job preventing any leaks and stuff. On years where they have had lots of leaked stuff, what were some examples of that leaked content? Was it all pictures of the device? Or was it more like the internals and stuff?

in which the firm estimates the cost
it's an estimate anyway and you're not taking into account the vast cost of R&D that went into making the console. I'm sure that more than makes up for the $18 of difference during its first release. Also that's not accounting for the fact that retailers also make a profit, so Sony certainly wasn't selling it to them at $399.

They can't keep using the 'Air' branding when there's a lighter/thinner alternative. So it becomes a what.

I'd put money on it, the Air dies without any major refresh and it goes back to MacBook and MacBook Pro.

They can use whatever branding they need to in a transitional period. We've been in this situation before in 2008 when the MBA was announced. There were three MacBook offerings. The MacBook (which was in the place that the MBA is in now) took more than three years to be discontinued.

MBA or no MBA, Apple needs an entry level laptop. My biggest gripe with the "MBA is dead argument" is that it's an incomplete thought. What do you think will happen? The 11" MBA is $899 and the MB is $1299. Price alone is only one factor, as these are vastly different machines.

If they discontinue the MBA completely, they just created a $400 cost of entry increase for macOS. It's pretty clear that the ancient cMBP at $1099 (which no one should be buying anyway) is going to bite the dust in October. So they either continue to sell one or both models of the MBA, refresh one or both, or if they discontinue they could do something like drop the 2015 13" MBP to $1000.

I think a refresh on the 13" MBA makes the most sense, and we've had plenty of rumors to support some MBA action.

Don't get me wrong. I'm all for simplification of a line-up, and believe we'll get there one day, but you have to think practically.

I'm dismayed that you'd pass on a new MacBook Pro because you can't remove the SSD.

I do data recovery for a living and SSDs fail especially Sandforce based ones like Apple has been using lately so I'm very interested in being able to replace one without having to replace the logic board -- especially after the machine is out of warranty. If I can't, this will mean selling the machine as soon as 3 years is up instead of being able to hand it down to a family member or friend.

The other thing is that one will need to decide from the get go how much space they would ever potentially need in the machine if they can never increase storage. I have many clients who made mistakes when purchasing newer Apple laptops and Mac Minis thinking they would be able to eventually upgrade RAM and/or storage.
