Checked out my Best Buy stock for rMBP 13" 256GB 8GB RAM. I live in a pretty busy metropolitan area (NYC), and almost half of the Best Buys are either displaying Pickup Tomorow(Fewer than 3 Left In Stock) or "Pick up on Thurs, October 6th, Friday October 7th, etc), while the other half just have "Available Tomorrow".

Last time I checked, like a month ago, it was all "Available Today" or "Available Tomorrow"

Random non US poster question! On the screenshot (assume taken from Best Buys website) that Volcomvenom has posted it mentions that the iMac is silver. Do they always do that on Best Buys site? There are no other colours of iMac?!

Guys I'm gonna grab a 15 inch MBP when they drop later this month but a thing that I'm debating with myself is what storage option to get.

I'm a student and a video creator. My current 1TB HP laptop (3 y old) has 709GB free (loads of movies on it mostly take up that space) but take into account that I don't edit much here because it's darn slow in Premiere Pro.

512GB would probably save me around £200 but 1TB is greatest... What would you suggest?

I'm in the same situation. I'm really hoping they get rid of the 256gb option and have the 1tb the same price as the 512 is currently. I doubt they do though

Yeah, 256 gigs seems a bit unlikely given that these models are ought to cater to the pro users which probs use as much as possible...

Another thing is that Apple raised their prices in the UK so even with my 10% student discount its still around £100 more for each option than it was before September

Actually, like I've said earlier, there logically are only two paths:

1)Offer more and more permanent storage, but charge a premium for the storage

2)Limit storage, and push users to iCloud to make $$

I really think Apple's direction is the latter, pushing users to iCloud. It has more maximum profit potential and actually fits into the idea of a continuous ecosystem, where one can access the same file from their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, any time. Plus, Apple's profit distribution last quarter showed that the "Services" category, which includes iCloud, is one of the fastest growing, and already equals the profits from Macintosh computers/iPads.

I agree with you. IMHO (and based on bugger-all), I think Apple will slash the 128GB option and leave the 3 tiers of storage above it with similar pricing (assuming a minor price bump upwards for the MBPs).

A solution for users would be to get more cloud storage, or otherwise just locally do it with a NAS setup. It's what I'm thinking of doing if I end up going MBP.

Options for DAS expand greatly with USB-C too, though. it is possible to get 4-6 TB bus powered across two 2.5" if one were needed.

The problem with NAS in my instance is that AFP performances sometimes problematic on QNAP drives, the performance just is not there. Samba is OK but can't handle the nuances of some AFP only implementations (time machine, sparse bundles) and NFS doesn't support the security parameters I require. Oh there is iSCSI but it's very inflexible.

So what I have is a windows server serving up AFP file shares via ExtremeZ-IP. The software is absolutely not cheap ($795 for a three seat license) but I get buttery smooth, ultra fast AFP connectivity.

I really hope that they don't go that route. I know cloud storage is the future and all, but it restricts critically your usage. No internet = no files. You can away on vacation with crappy WIFI, you can't access your files. You are on the go, on the train etc no files...

Maybe i'm not modern enough, but I am really not a fan of cloud storage (or maybe I don't know how to use it...)

Cloud storage is fine but not if you need to actually work with these files. I mean there is a reason why modern SSDs are moving at 2gb/sec. No Internet connection comes even close to this.

common, you have 4g at 150mbs and the future will be 5G with 1500mbs so we are close

Broadband in the US sucks...I might be more on board with cloud storage if Apple showed more of an interest in adding cellular to their laptops. But even then, that's data that I don't want to pay for.
