That's the point. Sports Cars are called "SPORTS" for a reason. They go faster. Just as a MacBook should continue to be called a Pro if it works faster then the other variants of the MacBook lineup.
Ahhh, yeah, definitely. They will always have the Pro moniker as long as it's faster than the one below it. It has always been the case. My main problem with this was that the user of this forums took the liberty to defi
Iris Pro 5100>HD 5300
That's not how discrete GPUs are defined. Those were integrated GPUs because they shared system RAM for graphical processing. Discrete GPUs are discrete because they are completely separate entities that have their own memory.
But still resided on another chip, they took extra space, regardless whether or not they were sharing memory. They were outside the CPU die. They were hybrids to be honest.

We can settle with that but, in practice, it's still the same set up. The 15" has always been the only one of those computers to get a completely discrete GPU. I think that will continue. Though Apple may continue to have an option with no dGPU.

If you don't need the dGPU - go for iGPU model. If you need it, go for dGPU. It is as simple as it can be.

That's where it is not so simple. How do I know if I need the d model for sure? I'm coming from a late 2008 which automatically and it on the pro models. I had it to switch automatically wherever I needed it so I am not 100% on how dependent I was on it, especially considering the newer models integrated graphic cards are probably better than the d gpu on my late 2008 unibody.

According to Amd presentation, new Polaris architecture will be a huge leap in performance for laptop GPUs, in theory for what they showed, next Amd "M470x" could easily double performance (Maybe even more) of current M370x with same TDP. So intel 580 is not rival for incoming discrete GPUs.

Even Hd 6100 in MBP 13 is much, much faster. What are you doing exactly with your computer?

I am more of a casual user as a whole - surfing the internet, youtube, netflix, LOTS of streaming via Plex or Beamer to my ATV... I would say the heaviest stuff I have used it for would be editing pictures in Lightroom, which I stopped after a week or two after seeing how painfully slow it was. I used to semi-game on it but I upgraded to a 256 SSD and while it was enough for the time being, I obviously need a bit more space if I want to run boot camp.

The reason why I was asking is because I found a deal and there is only an $80 price difference right now between the 15 inch rMBP so I figured I'd get it to be safe, but if a dGPU means it is more prone to problems long term wise due to it being soldered into the logic board then I might just go with the one without.

Go for iGPU, it will be more than enough if you have Iris Pro version. It is most powerful of all iGPUs that are currently in laptops from Apple.

In last year's CES they only introduced boring s**t like drones, fashion items no one will ever buy, and 3d printed clothing?
Or whatever the hell that was. Ohh and realsense. So im not expecting an announcement concerning Iris Pro. Hope I'm wrong though. I figure that they will just silently release them in mid January.

Yeah but Intel has stuff about "6th Gen Processors", Windows 10 and wearables on their CES mini site. http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/events/intel-ces.html

Macbook Pros on Apples site just went from shipping immediately to 1-3 business days before shipping.

Guess I'll be likely waiting for CES to be over before I even get my hands on a rMBP 15"...

Where do you see this? I still see that they're received within 2-3 days.

I guess it was just for my 15-inch rMBP custom build though (2.8GHz + 512GB SSD). :( For the past two weeks it was in stock completely though. However I see Best Buy has the same model for $300 cheaper than the student discount price on Apple.com and they also have a 15-day return policy so I might go with them tomorrow.

More then the procs, I'm actually excited about all the USB-C releases. If the USB-C on the new rMBP comes with TB3, then I should be set for another 5 years on my new machine.

Definitely on USB-C. Everyone was saying "what is this, not enough accessories" but in the past two days we've been given monitors hard drives docks etc.

i've never seen an intel keynote before. and i guess i've never seen so much pseudo lifestyle ********. unbelievable. poor reporters on-site having to bear all this crap.

I was thinking about buying and configuring an eGPU for my '13 rMBP (because I do play after work) but I might just wait and see what CPU and GPU the new 15" MBP will have.
