I'm going to wait for the first impressions to come out and make decision then. If the keyboard is the same as the MacBook I might consider getting the MacBook instead. If Apple are going to impose that awful keyboard across the entire line in might as well go as portable as possible.

Macbook and MBA lines will not have the oled strip.

WHY APPLE, why didn't you give me this!
Its gonna cost me a finger, so I added some realism. ;););););)

See the resemblance for yourself!

Lol! Love the term Unibrow for the new magic toolbar! Apple should be consulting you for their new line of products! I mean we have man buns, it's only a matter of time before hipsters adopt the Unibrow! Apple... always knowing what we need before we do. :D

Yeah I've never used the function keys while typing so I could see if you do that, or use it coding, then it could be an issue, but then again I stare at the keyboard and type so it wouldn't effect me.

I envision it more as a tool for music sampling and dragging where you want to be in the song (same idea for video editing), or showing the white balance levels (various other photo editing uses), so you can use more of your screen for the actual photo

And for the record I think this is apples way of slowly transitioning us year by year with a main goal having a total touch screen keyboard eventually ha

You can do all those things perfectly with the trackpad (which is even larger now). So what was the need for an OLED Bar. Touch ID is seperate, so I guess they could have embedded into the power button without the OLED Bar.

Contextual bar for applications isnt something that I'll pay extra for if I dont use applications that require that. So far till now, all of the uses we've all collectively thought of on MacRumors have not convinced for me this OLED Bar,. But Im still giving Apple a chance till the keynote.

I was using the function keys the other day debugging javascript on a web page using Chrome Web developer tools.

You wouldn't use them for iOS particularly but then again its never likely to be an issue for first party apps like Xcode. Therein lies the problem with this, its great if your using Apple software but what if you aren't ?

What function keys were you using? As far as I know there are only a couple that work and they have cmd alternatives that are much easier to reach. Not criticising, just intrigued.

My point is that there is almost 0 downsides to the new oled touchbar and potentially lots of upsides.

Think iTunes miniplayer, gestures to navigate the oled bar, notifications, shortcuts, contextual menus,

With the new trackpad, is it not possible they would just add extra multitouch controls for things like volume? I've never used the F keys on a Mac, only remember F1 being of any use on Windows... I'm guessing there will be some simple solution to have it laid out like whatever you want.

I welcome it. The top row is such a useless set of keys these days for the vast majority of people. It's really just the volume keys that are used and it'd be nice to have custom keys set there app dependant.

I don't mind, honestly I don't expect it to be particularly useful anyway. It will have mostly support in Apples own apps Pages, Final Cut etc. I don't use them anyway. I'll be surprised if the big third party applications like the Abode Creative Suite have support for it any time soon.

Its all dependent on Apple actually implementing it well anyway, on recent form there are no guarantees. The Watch to unlock feature in Sierra almost never works!

TO ALL OF YOU COMPLAINING ABOUT THE KEYBOARD:

These redesigned rMBPs won't have the rMB keyboard with minimal travel.

INSTEAD, they will utilise the keyboard found on the new Apple Magic keyboard, without the function keys obviously.

Go and try one of those out, I'm using one now, a rMB and the KB on the 15" rMBP and the magic wireless keyboard is the best. Correct balance in terms of key travel and size of individual key.

I mean I'm pretty positive about the touch bar thing but one negative I see that I might not get over is that there is no tactile feedback. meaning I can't change volume with little to no looking away from the display. I can feel that I'm pressing the button and I know exactly where it is and that it will do what I want it to. hopefully there will be a solution to this problem of mine

If Apple was to allow access to the API for the OLED bar could developers make modifications for example being able to lock the bar to f keys

I wonder if we can determine when these are released by shipments to the retail stores now. Best Buy will have them right?
