hey all.... have a question; I need a new MBP to tide me over until this mythical unicorn, er, Skylake MBP is released!

Ignoring HDD space & screen size (will be plugged into a monitor) and minor price discrepency, whats more 'bang for buck' out of these two:

15" 2.2Ghz i7 / 16GB ram or the 13" 2.9Ghz i5 / 16GB ram?

TIA!

What do you value more, compacity or graphics performance? ^_^

15 inch is a lot more powerful with more screen real estate, it is also quad core.

Compacity? Is there a massive difference between the two gfx wise? (Will have a quick look at the specs in depth tho)

Not too fussed about the screen size, do you think the 'better' cpu in the 15" enough to negate the 'better' gpu on the 13"?

Compactness.

And I highly doubt the GPU is better on the 13" - more knowledgeable users here might confirm.

Ah :) and I thought you meant the other way around (13" gpu better than the 15" gpu for some reason)....screen size/portability isnt a concern, just the overall 'horsepower' really :)

Yep.

Basically, if you can live with the bigger footprint, added weight and 256GB of storage, I'd say go for the 15".
Yeah, can live with those things, just thought the Broadwell iGPU in the 13" was better then the Haswell iGPU in the 15"?

Word. I need more coffee. I'm not familiar at all with the Iris Pro, so someone else will have to weigh in ^^
Haha, all good...I know the feeling :)

Have a few reviews/articles to read through when I'm in front of a bigger screen than an iPhone :)

Is the resale on the rMBPs good enough to make it worth buying one now and selling it right before/when the Skylake updates come along?

I'm not gonna lie, I'm worried about the first gen of the new rmbp line.

Apple always has some type of faulty crap popping up and then they don't admit it until 2/3 years later just like the ****** display issue.

I would take a silent skylake update for a good normal price rather than complete change with faulty crap for a super high price.

anybodys thoughts on this?

I have no computer atm but everytime I enter on this thread, I feel the need to wait until the skylake launch, however I need the laptop, to work on my degree final project, and I'll be buying the 15" rMPB with dGPU the next week. Do you think it's a good laptop even today? I want it to be my only workstation for the next years. I'll study game design the next year, so it has to be capable. Nevertheless, the University has their own software and hardware to do 3D stuff and I think I won't need a powerhouse. I'm going to do little gaming projects on Unity, focused to mobile market too.

You might be bummed about being 2 proc generations behind once the Skylake macbooks are rolled out. That's not to say that you necessarily need the added 10-15% performance that Skylake would bring, but it will impact the longevity of your machine if you decide to bite the bullet now.

Btw, big fan of your music.

I'm not worried. The main issue that arises is almost always with drivers and firmware which often takes a few updates to iron out any significant issues. I can't remember the last time any first generation Mac had actual hardware defects.

I don't think it will be the case, but I'd be extremely disappointed if there are no hardware revisions this year. I'd like to see a slimmer & lighter rMBP that offers >8 hours battery life. Hopefully the glowing Apple logo on the lid gets killed off as it looks so cheesy, so I'd like to see the new Pro adopt the metallic/chrome type logo found on the 12" MB as it looks far more professional.

15" GPU > 13" GPU always.
It's a question of price vs. performance. The 15" CPU beats the 13" one but not by a ton.

The 15" CPU has over twice the computational power of the 13"... you're calling that "not by a ton"?

From what I understand:
13" rMBP 2015 = Broadwell = Iris 6100
15" rMBP 2013 = Haswell = Iris 5200

According to Notebookcheck, the 5200 is better than the 6100. This is not surprising since only the 5200 has eDRAM.

There's usually driver, screen weirdness in a few at the start.

https://www.apple.com/uk/support/macbookpro-videoissues/

iMacgot hit by the crap 3TB drives.

If in doubt /simplest method is to just wait at least a few months for kinks to be found and hopefully updated at manufacturing.
Or have a backup Mac you can go to if any issues.

For those who need to save waiting might help too by giving more time to save, let reviews come out (like http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2016...nderbolt-3-make-the-best-a-little-bit-better/)
better peripheral recommendations, better peripherals brought to market -
It's not just money saving for the MBP:
other potential things like case, Apple 5k monitor, Thunderbolt 3 dock and USB-C cables,
Spare charger for work perhaps.

Good thing MacBook 12" has to some degree primed the manufacturers for USB-C.

You will be just fine, don't worry. 2 months ago I've bought late 2013 dGPU version, using it connected to LG 34uc87 via thunderbolt, and everything works like a charm. I use it mainly for corona sdk and unity 3d.

On some larger projects in Unity I wish for 32GB of ram, but still can't really complain. I would wait for skylake, but I've got this laptop for 1200$, a deal I simply couldn't pass on. Now I'm gonna wait for 2nd gen redesigned mac, and when they release it, gonna sell this one and buy a new one. Hopefully with 32 or even 64GB of ram :)

Meanwhile there is still nothing for the March Event, at least we have a little bit more information about the date of the WWDC 2016.

edit: also, news about Polaris

here's the full interview with AMD boss Raja Koduri

In summary, it’s fourth generation Graphics Core Next. HDMI 2.0. It supports all the new 4K displays and TVs coming out with just plug and play. It supports DisplayPort 1.3, the latest specification. It’s very exciting 4K support. We can do HEVC encode and decode at 4K on this chip. It’ll be great for game streaming at high resolution, which gamers absolutely love. It takes no cycles away from games. You can record gameplay and still have an awesome frame rate. It’ll be available in mid-2016.

Wouldn't this mean Apple could include Displayport 1.3 support if they have Polaris?
