Well, knowing that theoretically Apple has the new Skylake processors for testing purposes, we also could expect some kind of spec boost on the website without the hypothetical event?

Manufacturers like Apple, Dell, Lenovo, ... receive samples way ahead of the release date. That way they can launch their products as soon as Intel can deliver them in large enough quantities.

Thanks man, I appreciate the fast response ;)

Like Apple will allow the use of external GPU's with MacBooks. I estimate a 0% chance of this happening.

Why not exactly? Seems like a good way to cater to professionals. Possibility to extend MacBook Pros, iMacs and Mac Pros with extra GPU power when needed. Discreet GPU's will be a thing of the past I predict. A lot less headache for Apple because they won't have to repair broken dGPU's.

Indeed, but Only if we're not talking about a redesign, that would warrant a keynote for sure.

I agree and expect that the 15" won't have a dedicated gpu option anymore now that Intel has achieved huge performance gains with the Iris pro 580. That way Apple can make the 15" slimmer and more portable.

Hmm.. What's the smallest possible chassis that Apple could fit a 45W CPU into? if the dGPU goes the way of the dodo on MBPs, it wouldn't surprise me if Apple just slashes down the line-up from 13" and 15" to XX" with a 45W CPU and the Iris Pro 580.

Does this sound crazy?

It doesn't. Then we could potentially have a 12" retina MacBook and a 14" MBP. A 14" MBP would be ideal for me personally. But I'm afraid that this is really long term thinking. For this year I expect a new redesigned 13" & 15" MBP.

If it is only the 580 Iris pro iGPU powering the graphics, I don't see it actually being able to maintain playing very average games like dota 2 and CS:GO on a 4k monitor though :( Or is there some kind of edram that I missed.

Not 100% certain, but I believe the Iris Pro 580 has 128MB of edRAM. Dunno whether that's significant

Well, you can use external GPU via TB2 even now. If it's not the most top-tier GPU then TB2 will most likely even provide enough performance to cater its needs. It's just that it's not well integrated into eco-system, no hot plug, no way to use for internal monitor (I doubt this will change anyway), most implementations are from small vendors and are quite costly etc.
What changes for TB3 is we will get implementations from well established vendors like Asus, MSI, Gigabyte because they sell GPUs and likely would prefer to have revenue from laptops without dGPU.
What Apple can do is just not add better support to OS X, no more.

Apple do not care about catering for professionals. Allowing users to use their own GPU would ruin their bottom line on MacBooks. Why spend more on a higher config when you can just get the base model & plugin your own GPU?

Better cpu, more memory, more space? The company I work at don't buy MBP with dGPU's as it's not worth the hassle. For people needing graphic power they get them Mac Pro's.

Apple would probably develop their own eGPU, with a nice finish and a hefty price tag. Maybe even have different configs depending on how hardcore of a user you are. Some might not need a Nvidia Titan (that requires more power than a midend gpu), but still want the "docking" functionality that an eGPU could offer.

For example you can plug in peripherals in the Razer one, so you just have to attach one cable and you're good to go.
.

Like j1104638 said you can already get a eGPU working with TB2. But TB3 brings hot plugging to the table, and hopefully Apple will implement it to work in OSX, although I don't really care as I will probably dual boot to be able to run games anyway.

Stupid sentiment that Apple don't care about professionals. They do, it's just that there's more money in theconsumer/prosumer segment.

I read that AMD Polaris GPU will be release soon. Guys, you think that the new 15'' MBP come with Polaris and Skylake? This will be awesome!

Hey guys,

I just read this news on a dutch tech site, Tweakers.net (http://tweakers.net/nieuws/107531/i...es-met-vermoedelijk-zijn-krachtigste-gpu.html).

In short: it refers to a PDF from Intel which contains references to the mobile i7 CPUs which have the Iris Pro 580 and their (consumer) prices. This would mean Intel is selling them to manufactures…

This would mean a march release could be possible :).

Yup, it would be great. However, an early March release would give us one but not the other. Polaris will be released mid 2016 so I'm starting to hope for a June update of rMBP.

AMD Polaris is due mid-2016. I'm expecting the refreshed MacBooks in March (June at the latest) so the 15" MacBook could see a mid 2016 release if Apple have opted for AMD over NVIDIA again. A refreshed 12" MacBook & redesigned 13" MacBook Pro could still be set for March/April.

Of course this is all pure speculation.

Hell I asked my employer to buy me MacBook Pro with dGPU just because it was easier to explain why I wanted the dGPU than why I wanted 512 GB SSD and better CPU. I don't need this dGPU.

It was the other way around for me. Said I wanted the high end one, got the base one with the cpu, ram and hdd maxed.

Excellent finding, it's also onPCWorld.
http://www.pcworld.com/article/3026...ed-in-mobile-with-new-skylake-xeon-chips.html

There are three new CPU's listed on that Intel price sheet (Effective Jan 24, 2016, yet not available on Intel's website), and if I go by the numbering then I can infer that these are Iris pro 580 enabled parts.
Core i7-6770HQ preceded by Core i7-4770HQ with Iris Pro 5200
Core i7-6870HQ preceded by Core i7-4870HQ with Iris Pro 5200
Core i7-6970HQ preceded by Core i7-4970HQ with Iris Pro 5200

That was posted a couple of pages before on this thread. But thanks anyway.

I have to see a giant signal that Apple will launch the new rMBP on March to not buy tomorrow the 15-inch model...
