All standard MBP offerings naturally progress to new minimums with time. MacBook Pro base models aren't entry level products; lower offerings are for the MBA and MB.

If anything, the SSD upgrade costs will get cheaper. Optimistically, we'll get new minimums.

If it's a redesign I can see that happening. Its been 4 years of the same base sizes.

Retina screens, USB-C, Thunderbolt, PCI-E based flash, and intelligent graphics switching all disagree with you.
Those are all true, even though only MacBook uses USB-C. Lets face it, while they like to innovate they also don't mind taking there sweet time. Most of their Mac line is out dated, skylake iMac is stuck with thunderbolt 2, the 15" still on haswell, and let's not even mention the Mac Pro or Mac mini.

I reallly think that this year we won't see any dGPU in the 15" . Why ?
firstly : iris 580 is enough powerfull to remplace a midrange dGPU with in a smaller thermal envelope. So a thinner mac with a slighty better performance (APPLE love this)
secondly : Now with thunderbolt 3 "PROs" can use very high ends videao cards in eGPU and not just a midrange dGPU like 950m ...

Both skylake processor (13" & 15") are out now, with the apropriate video chips (550 & 580).
I strongly trust in a march anouncement for the redesign

Any external dGPU?

Look at my previous comment : external dGPU = eGPU

Yeah...just wondering whether apple would allow you to use any brand of eGPU..or tie you into something they branded...for those who need the power...just seems a little un-apple-like, if that makes sense?

I share this vision. Just not sure if we'll have to wait until March or June.

Doesn't need to be Apple branded. Look at Thunderbolt, Apple include v1 and v2 in their machines but the only Apple branded TB device is the Thunderbolt Display which is still running TB1!!!! After all these years. Apple concede high end peripheral to third parties years ago, the trend will continue with eGPU.

Sounds perfect to me....just a little too good to become true....let's hope for this...and March!

Yet another day where you wake up to three new pages in this thread. Sparks some hope that there has been some new rumours or what not. But no. Same bickering about the same things as the last 150 pages.. Sigh.

True intelligence. People just want to socialize with others for lacking a real life outside of there toys and yak about silly stuff. I want real information, not ranting and speculations ;)

Hey all. A somewhat relatable situation: I could sell my 15" MBP Mid-2015 16gb 512 M370X equipped now - I bought it in July last year, since my job demanded some video editing work. I know now that I will not need this horsepower until Sept and have a work laptop for everything else. Reckon I should sell now and wait to get a Skylake MBP? If March brings the 13" MBP I could go with that and buy eGPU in Sept when it would be needed (can manage/quite like a 13 and external monitor). I'm thinking if I wait until March I may get significantly less for this machine, given the appeal of Skylake MBPs then, should they arrive...

Why are all of you betting on march?

We don't know when the Skylake rMBP's are coming. It could be March but also June.

If you are willing to sell it before this upcoming march event consider:

- That it might be released in June, which would leave you with no rMBP, but you do have your work laptop.

- Depending on where you are from, if it is released in June, there might be a release delay for your country. So maybe you'd get it in July. Which is a close call.

- We don't know for sure if Apple will include compatibility for an external GPU.

So depending on how things play out, you might not want to sell your rMBP just yet.

Why do you even need to think about upgrading? Just keep it.
I like the longevity supplied by the TB3... primarily to connect an eGPU when I need to.

I'm also thinking the 13 coupled with monitor at home is more suited to my purposes.

Lastly, it seems heat is much less of an issue with Skylake offerings so far (I'm referring here to reviews of the Dell XPS 15 - see here, for example: http://hothardware.com/reviews/dell-xps-15-late-2015-review?page=8 ), so I can see that being the case with MBPs. I use music production software (Bitwig) which has activated the fans, for example. I imagine this is due to the ageing Haswell chips, since music software is hardly demanding.

Surely eGPU is given, provided TB3 is provided. There will be third party options...

Surely it's gotta be March. FFS, In June Intel will be announcing Cannonalakes slowly and Macbooks will be 1 generation behind basically from the off o_O:oops::eek::confused::mad::mad:

I'm hoping March redesign, and then January/Februaru update with Cannonlakes and fixing any problems with new redesign (if any of course but gotta be realistic)

Cannonlake was delayed and won't even begin to roll out until the second half of next year. If Apple releases in June, they could refresh early the next year with Kaby Lake, and maybe (assuming there are no further delays, which is a stretch) could update to cannonlake next fall.

Sigh, here we go again, with the infinite loop ( :D ) of predictions and speculations...
At this point I'm feeling like I've written the same things thousands of times.
But, as long as we're chilling, it's kinda good.
Who wants to enjoy some relaxing music?

Speaking of predictions and future:
- We are all mentioning AMD Polaris for the next rMBP, but what about Nvidia Pascal?
Here some news (I still prefer Polaris as dGPU anyway).
- I don't think we'll see Kaby Lake (Cannonlake? Tiger Lake?! Ice Lake?!? C'mon Intel, take a decision on this damn names!) any time soon. A lot of recent articles agree upon the approaching of the end of the Moore Law. Also, the news about the next CPUs are really tiny, so I won't bet on them.
- About this goddamn release: I've start thinking we'll see the new MBPs on June.
According to the little news from sources we have, Apple will introduce new MacBook Air (likely Pros instead) at the WWDC.
I know that this would be, sadly, the longest period between upgrade for the MBP.
And I know also that Apple could have upgraded the 15" with Broadwell long time ago.
But hey, they're Apple.
They'll make tons of money in any case.

Well, predictions made.
Back to work and chilling.

I forgot: this is mine MBP!

Bored now.
I don't think we will see a release in March. Mainly because March is right around the corner and there are no leaks at all. Surely, we'd have seen a leak by now, IF it was going to be released in a couple weeks, no?!

I agree 100%.

Let's be honest: the dGPUs in Macbook Pros have always been rather meh! Hardly powerful enough for any gaming. If the new 580 is capable enough to function as a feasible replacement for every-day graphical tasks (outside of gaming, of course), and it helps keeping temperature levels down, increase battery life and thin down the case, then why the heck not!

At any rate, we all know that for a decent gaming experience, eGPU is the only realistic way to go, so I won't be sad to kiss the M370X good bye and good riddance... what a lousy card for a $2500+ so-called "pro" machine!
