So I think I'm just going to go ahead and get the current mbp. .
If you need it now, get one now.
Here is a good review the latest MBP.

intel keep boasting how this is the most significantly leap they made in a decade, maybe its marketing or maybe they are onto something. honestly i would be kicking myself if i buy the current mbp only if skylake comes out 3 months later, speed wise it isn't much but if the apu is about twice as fast it will certainly be more future proof. i'm on a 2008 unibody mbp as well.So I think I'm just going to go ahead and get the current mbp. I've been struggling on for years with our old power Mac and 1st generation Intel mbp. While I might be able to hang on for a few more months, I don't think I can get to next year. There are some tasks that are now becoming so frustrating.
I can't see how game changing the next chip will be. Do CPUs need to get any faster? How important is thunderbolt 2? I'm going to run external storage daisychained to an audio interface and (maybe a projector). Pretty sure that will work fine with thunderbolt 1 let alone 3.
Appreciate some thoughts before I fork out £3,000.

Yeah, you can get some really powerful Mac Pro towers for under £1000 but I'm skeptical about buying second hand electricals.Have you thought about a slightly older, refurbished or used one? Not paying top dollar will lessen the sting if the next one or second next rocks.
...Refurbished from apple sounds good in principle but there isn't much of a discount.
With you, I think would look for top spec. Interestingly the new flash drive does sound appealing. The new storage apparently offers some significant performance enhancements. While I would be so annoyed if I bought today and a new (proper) upgrade was released within 3 months, I think I would be equally annoyed if I waited, and waited and waited and Skylake didn't offer much. Also mindful that a redesign is just speculation at the moment.Since I don't know which features you consider important this is just an example.
Because I don't care about the force-touch trackpad, I would see more value in buying a 2014 with more RAM, a faster CPU, and/or a larger drive then I would a 2015 with lower specs but the trackpad for the same amount of money.

I think a small redesign is pretty safe: USB-C, Trackpad etc...
I think Apple will end up making the Macbook Pro slimmer if they go solely with USB-C. Obviously not as thin as the Macbook but surely thinner to some extent.
I am now waiting for Kaby Lake - I leave this thread !

It's easier to say and write than Kabinakagami Lake. Take off, eh?Where do they get this funny names from ??
... I really regret not getting the 1TB drive. I tought 500GB would be enough, but it isn't. I'm having a hard time trying to keep 10% of the storage free.
I assume you mean the Transcend JetDrive Lite? It really does perform as stated, and is barely noticeable on the side of the laptop.I bought an SDXC card that perfectly fits in the Air (it's almost impossible to realise it's there unless you specifically take a look in the SD slot).
Do you guys think we will see the return of the 17" MBP with Skylake? 4k screen or something... would be nice. I refuse to upgrade my late 2011 17" until that day comes!
I would say unlikely. You can get the same res with the 15" rMBP now as was available on the 17"
I agree with you, a bigger notebook would be a great alternative to those who use it as primary computer for work, not just to consume media.Tbh its more the physical size of the MacBook that I prefer, rather than the resolution. The 4K screen would just be a bonus. I could settle for a 16" borderless screen though if the decided to go that route.

And again, a 16" with less border screen would be as small as the current 15" one.
I'm also not a fan of fractions on the HiDPI mode.
Yeah just with extra screen size in the same form factor. I could see apple going more this route tbh, 16" screen with same small size.
I use my MBP for absolutely everything apart from gaming. So want as big a screen as possible, within reason of course...
