I'm looking to get a new soundcard asap, but might get a temporary solution and then get the "final" solution later this year/early 2016 depending on when the skylake & new design comes out. I could probably use a tb to fw adapter (i guess I could use a usb-c to fw adapter as well) but I'd obviously like to avoid that, and use a clean path..There aren't that many USB 3 soundcards on the market (yet?) for some reason..The whole market is slow to adapt, and most manufactures don't even have a tb option yet...and now that I see predictions hinting towards possibly no usb and tb ports (?) I'm confused as to what to go for. I guess a tb device would be the smartest decision but ya, I'd like some kind of premature assurance that what I do invest in, will definitely work great on the new machine. If it's too early to tell, I might have to do the temporary solution, but even that, ideally, I'd like to be a smart choice, and not just get a random usb 2 or fw400 soundcard...Kind of a weird limbo these days :S

Where do you get the no thunderbolt port? Thunderbolt port is a guaranteed in the next MBP, the debate is more to the number of ports apple will give.

The next MBP will have USB and Thunderbolt ports, the only debate is how many and which versions. What is certain is that it will have ZERO FireWire ports.

There are virtually no USB C devices available because there are a small handful of laptops and motherboards fitted with them. External soundcard will not be a huge priority as there is a fairly low volume demand for them. Would safely predict that you will be waiting a long time before there is a wide variety to choose from.

Thunderbolt accessories are a pain. They are expensive, they are hard to find and even harder to source. I am not surprised that you are struggling to find something. Hopefully this will change if Intel can sort out the licencing for version 3.

Okay thanks for clarifying that. I was dumbfounded when I gathered from the previous pages that there was uncertainty to the ports, so I thought maybe they'd scrap traditional usb and tb ports altogether, also given the fact that the new macbook only has 1 freakin port. Since most tb soundcards are hella expensive compared to the already established usb/fw market, I'd refrain from investing in tb if it wasn't more or less guaranteed to be included in the upcoming mbp. Glad to hear that's not the case :)

The Macbook is targeted at people that effectively want an iPad with a keyboard. It's lack of connectivity reflects it's expected use, email, browsing and very light media work. Apple would commit product suicide for the MBP range if they tried to push a product that many view as a professional workhorse that only had one connectivity port.

Ya, but I thought for a moment they might be stupid enough to put lets say 3 usb-c ports, a hdmi and an sd card reader in it, discard the tb ports, and call it a day..

As TB3 connector has the same form factor as USB C it's more likely they will appear the same but there will be a mixture of USB and TB.

Hi Sam. So couldn't we expect the Skylake chip that Asus is going to use in their laptop to also work in other laptops too?
Yes, they'll work in any laptop but Apple always tends to use the vpro versions with iris graphics. And those are due in 2016.

Dang i didn't even know that. So would the tb3 and usb-c ports be the same, just depending on what you put into it, changes what type it is? Or would it be a usb-c port, next to an identical looking tb3 port, but either or wouldn't work as the other?

Well my 17" Notebook finally died. I couldn't wait any longer, need a laptop. Decided to buy the current high end stock config with M370X / 512GB Storage / 2.5GHz Quad Core.

I dunno if I'll get the Skylake one since it seems like that'll be inside of 12 months from now but if it's redesigned similar to the MacBook I might get that one as-well and give this new one I just ordered to my wife.

According to the Skylake launch schedule leaked 1 month ago, that is probably incorrect. i7-6700HQ may likely only have Intel HD graphics (if it follows the naming convention of its Broadwell equivalent, the i7-5700HQ), but the i7-6820HQ and i7-6920HQ likely will have Iris Pro graphics. Those launch in October-November. Source:

Right, but "U" is still only dual core. I'm expecting the H chips in MBPs.

If by that you mean the 15" MBPs, then yes, they have quad core "H" processors. However, the 13" MBPs have always used dual core "U" class processors.

they say skylake u is coming out in sept. any truth to that? what is apple's turn around time for refreshing when the skylake u comes out?

i know this doesn't fit into the regular pattern of mbp refresh, but this is the first time intel releasing two cpu series so close together.

Well, i am going off to college next year (In this coming september), and I have the money saved up for the base model 15 inch, the one I want, but I am not buying one yet just in case Apple releases an updated 15-inch in August, is there anyway that is going to happen or no? Any suggestions?

This lines up with the Skylake launch schedule as leaked by Benchlife 1 month ago. Desktop Skylake-S processors i7-6700K and i5-6600K are scheduled for August-September. Mobile processors aren't scheduled to be available until September.
Well hasn't apple always had early access to new mobile Intel processors since always?

Yes for the 15 inch. But whether Apple will launch the new 15 inch rmbp then separate from the new 13 inch is impossible to say.

It's a good chance those September mobile Skylake chips will be dual-core only. Which means that the 13 inch MacBook Pro could be released in the fall, but the 15 inch not until next winter (or early spring).

There is no chance for a 15 inch skylake MBP in August. There is a very, very slim chance for October 2015, but most people are guessing March 2016.

The Skylake processors scheduled for September that Apple would likely use in a 13" MBP are indeed dual core. However, the quad core i7 H class processors (i7-6820HQ and i7-6920HQ) that could go in a 15" MBP are scheduled for October-November. So, given that Apple usually chooses October for fall Macbook Pro releases, there's scant possibility of a 15" rMBP being launched in the fall (unless, as some people hope, Intel will secretly ship millions of these chips to Apple in advance). It's looking more like February -- just as Apple did with the early 2013 rMBP, the early 2011 MBP, the early 2008 MBP and the original MBP in 2006.
