this is the same Apple that has been rehashing the 2012 retina a few times over and is still charging top dollar for the latest one. The same Apple that had the balls to release 2014 and 2015 retina base with worse graphics than the base model 2012 with dGPU. Nothing Apple does makes any damn sense anymore. At this point the 2016 retina will be released in June. It'll feature 2014 specs in gold and space Grey for twice the price. (Rocking in corner).
I fully agree. Played with a Spectre x360 and XPS 13 today and almost got weak. If Apple fails to deliver and presents just some rip off offerings, I'll switch to another option instead. Since W10 seems pretty nice, I don't care too much about OSX anymore. It is still good, but improvements have been underwhelming the last few years and that probably won't change with the next updates. Siri on the Mac? Copy/paste of Cortana? Apple just lost the lead while concentrating on watches and cars....MS has the Surface Pro, Apple the iPad Pro (which is rather a Surface RT)....and so on and on.....Apple is just reacting these days....no innovation at all......sad...

I have a feeling we will be getting a slightly re-designed Macbook Pro with the same new battery technology we saw in the retina Macbook (they'd be stupid not to use it everywhere) so they can say they have even better battery life. I would also not necessarely expect, but hope that different colors will be available, again, just like with the Macbook.

If Apple can give me better battery life, choice of colors, updated cpu/gpu as well thunderbolt 3, they have my money!

The delay is so long now that Apple might as well wait. No point in releasing a rushed/half-baked product that Dell had a year ago.
[doublepost=1456619736][/doublepost]

That's why Apple should release it now, it's been so long and they had many time to plan a redesign. I don't think they have just started working on it last month. That, plus the gap constantly increasing from their competitors and Apple (which is 1-2 years behind in laptops). Some people think that Apple no longer focusses on Macs redesigns/innovations just because the main income comes from iPhones, but the Mac Pro (which is one of the less sold Macs) and iMac 5K are just there to prove it.

I think this MBP will be the last one. In 4 years' time (2020), they won't bother with a form factor update. You'll just buy an iPad Pro and connect a keyboard/mouse.

Just no. Apple won't let you use an iPad as a real computer (neither will they put it OSX) since all the Macbooks would be wiped out, and Macbooks are still giving a lot of income to Apple, not to say Apple realised how people are losing interest in iPads. Can you imagine Apple erasing all Macbooks to go "all in" with iPads, and then people not corresponding them with sales? That would be hilarious.

About your "They get a hold over Dell by gobbling up all the Kaby Lake chip supply and Apple aren't releasing a SkyLake "me too" product like the ones Dell already have on the market.", you don't seem to know how Intel releases work. In 2015 there was only core-M and 15W Skylake CPU releases, only now in January the CPUs that fit 15" MBP have been released. So Apple isn't competing with Dell on that sense. The same goes for Kaby Lake, Intel will release first the processors that won't go to 15" MBPs but to tablets, and low-mid end laptops.

I agree, even though Apple makes most money from iphones and what not, they just surpassed the point where they have 10% of the pc market. It may not be their main form of growth, but it's still growth to them.

I don't know about that. Apple is making straight cash off the mobile line, throw in the what seems like Mandatory AppleCare and they're laughing all the way to the bank. And heck, they've been expanding it over the past few years. Its the MBP that's really languishing this past couple of quarters. We can take solace in the fact that Apple themselves has to use these machines day in and day out which may require them to continue to innovate, we may never see iOS development kit on an actual iOS device or even Windows, no reason to when they can just use that to run Mac revenue even further.

Not only that but Apple owned 90% of the $1k+ computing market just a few years ago, I wouldn't be surprised if that number dropped only a few percentage points. They can squeeze a lot of cash out of these units especially when you throw in AppleCare. I am sitting here, as are many others, waiting to spend $1.4k-$2.5k on a hot new Macbook Pro, all they have to do is actually show up .

I believe those higher end chips Apple tends to use have been released as of late January and they are just starting to roll out.

Exactly right. Which is why we'll see refreshed MBPs shortly. There's no way they're going to wait until 2017 to refresh their line. It would drastically impact sales, and they are a business. There's also no good reason to wait for June when the suitable chips are becoming available now. Why would they hold off on increasing sales?

UNLESS... they need time to finish a redesign. But even in that case, I still think they would update the line with Skylake now, before doing a redesign later in the year.

One way or another, there will be new MacBooks announced within a month.

Hope you are right. Or will have to buy a 2015 one, which really would kinda piss me off..
Just to make sure, the current mid range 13 is perfectly fine to drive an external 4K desktop display, right ?

There's a huge rift in the design team holding up the machine.

It's causing in-fighting, grown men running off in tears to the HR department and some have even resigned to go work for Microsoft in disgust.

All over a stupid 3.5mm jack.

If there is a redesign, it's not like they had no time for it ...
Here it sounds like they would be in a rush since skylake is out or something ..
Ok no rumors, that is a bit worrying

I don't believe so. When? At the March event? That doesn't make sense. The March event is for iPad/Watch/iPhone SE.

Apple needs to lead. Releasing a Skylake machine that Dell have had on the market since 2015 is not leading.

So, Apple will delay until Kabylake later this year (July/August) and have the global chip supply completely stitched up. That means a WWDC announcement in June. 16" available in Jan 2017. The demand for this machine will be huge. Chips aren't coming off the production line fast enough.

Apple are forced into delaying. They can't release a Skylake machine like a Dell. They can't access the number of chips that they want. They have to worry about all their other products and they have to keep their developers happy. If Kabylake was available now, the machine would be announced ahead of WWDC and available for WWDC.

But it's not. Apple have to delay. It'll be announced at WWDC and the MBP will be the first machine with Kabylake in July/August.

First of all, Dell hasn't had a Skylake machine like the ones coming out in a bit, since the chips haven't been available until now.

Secondly, there no way that appropriate Kaby Lake chips will be released this year. Why would Intel cannibalize themselves? The Broadwell roll out was a disaster. Skylake is what's going to be in the next MBP's. Then we might see a Skylake bump, or the next MBP after these ones will have Kaby Lake.

Stop trolling around.

Pretty sure the most recent XPS models were released in late 2015 with Skylake.

Kaby Lake GT4e should not appear until mid 2017 though. Skipping Broadwell and Skylake is suicide.

The only thing that's debatable is when the redesign is coming. Skylake or Kaby Lake...

People don't understand that "skylake" is not one set of processors, but a micro architecture that comprises many chips and families of products.
Bingo. I did not realize that until I read this thread.

I would imagine that the redesign would occur with Skylake, not Kaby Lake. The Dell's XPS 15 is a very sleek looking machine to be sure but the Skylake processor that is used in it is not the same processor that Apple would use (the ones with Iris 550 and Iris Pro P/580 graphics), so yes - they had Skylake FIRST but it is not the same chips that the rMBP would have (potentially) got.

First Skylake came out August 2015 with the Core i7-6600K.
The Late 2015 XPS 15 got reviews and availability in October ( i5-6300HQ, i7-6700HQ)

But Skylake with eDRAM - e.g. GT4e graphics - Iris Pro 580? Isn't out yet. So already we're looking at a 7 month at least spread between initial Skylake CPU coming out and the eDRAM containing CPUs you might want in a future MBP.

Would Kaby Lake not follow this pattern? If Kaby Lake isn't starting to appear till Q3 2017, 7 months on top of that makes Q1-2 2018.
Average MBP cycle of ~9 months - they have time to do Skylake, Skylake refresh, then Kaby Lake.

What's the rush anyway? We've seen what happens to rushed hardware and software with the XPS 15 and the SurfaceBook & SP4.
For the 15" guess we may be awaiting the i7-6770HQ, i7-6870HQ & i&-6970HQ Iris Pro 580.
https://www.macrumors.com/2016/01/27/skylake-macbook-pro-15-chips/
For the 13" the i5-6267U, i5-6287U, Core i7-6567U Iris Pro 550.
Or Apple just updates the MacBook with m3 6Y30/m5 6Y54/m5 6Y57 and a few threads have conniptions

1. Your Kaby Lake scenario is impossible. As others have repeatedly pointed out, appropriate Kaby Lake chips for MBPs won't be released until 2017. This has been known since 4 months ago. Benchlife showed that mobile U class chips with GT3e won't be released until weeks 6-18 of 2017, so we're talking a February-May 2017 time frame for any possible 13" MBP chips. The mobile GT4e chips weren't even on those leaked production roadmaps, so 15" MBP chips would be even later.

2. It's ridiculous to posit that Apple could have the "global chip supply completely stitched up." Apple has never had exclusive early access to an entire generation of Intel chips. Apple had 7.2% of worldwide computer shipments in 2015, and now all of a sudden they're so important and high volume they can demand and control Intel's global chip supply?
Source: http://appleinsider.com/articles/16...d-was-lone-manufacturer-to-see-growth-in-2015

3. I don't know why you keep commenting that Apple is fixated on what Dell is doing. Per the source above, Dell is the #3 manufacturer for PC market share, so it's a leap of logic to assume Apple is trying to overtake them as the leader. Besides, if there's anything to be learned from the 15" MBP still having Haswell today, it's that Apple doesn't consider having the latest chips in its laptops necessarily all that important.

Don't forget we did have a rumor in late November about redesigned MBAs at WWDC: https://www.macrumors.com/2015/11/30/thinner-macbook-air-13-15-wwdc-2016/

Since the models they talk about are 13" and 15" they could be talking about MBP, or even if they are Airs, we'll get pros at the same time or sooner. The Air chips have been available for a long time, so it'd be weird to get pros first in March and airs second in June.

I also totally understand the possibility of no new MBA in 2016 with rMB taking its place, but I do not believe that will happen this year.

I can see them removing the airs and sticking with the rMB only (at a lowered base price). At 12" it'll suffice as a replacement for both the 11" and 13" Air. They just need to add another USBC port.

This would also lend credence to them going TB3 only on the rMBP.

People ask how is it possible that Apple would update MBPs now and on WWDC again.

Update without redesign now - Skylake chips, integrated GPUs only, lower price points.

On WWDC completely new Macbook Pros with Skylake chips and Polaris GPUs.
A bit of play with customers, and milking them to death, I would say. But thats how they can get traction on old and new design of MBP's.

It doesn't make sense, nor would it be economically viable to update a model that will only last 3 to 4 months.
