Yes that is correct. the 950M actually uses just over 50W I heard.

Therefore makes sense to use Iris Pro, because same or better performance. And much less power consumption, and heat, and size.

However, if Apple was to wait for Polaris/Pascal. Then it would make sense to use those, since they will have even faster performance and DX12 support
But with a separate GPU, the CPU and GPU compete over 85 watts of power. However, on Iris Pro the GPU is part of the CPU, so the CPU and GPU will have to compete over the 45 watt CPU limit. Wouldn't forcing the GPU and CPU to share 45 watts vs 85 watts reduce performance, even though Iris Pro is more efficient?

It would reduce performance only if the components needed more power. While that may very well happen under many circumstances, its not guaranteed to happen all the time, even when gaming.

Its also 50W more cooling that is required of the chasis, which I believe is the bigger deal.

Right, So the Iris Pro set up is limited to only 45W. the CPU+GPU setup can have up to 85W. So there will probably be many circumstances where Iris pro performance is reduced because it only gets up to 45W. Thus, Iris Pro still performs better despite being disadvantaged by less max power consumption.

Ok, I am just worried about throttling which is a big issue on my 2012 rMBP w/GT650m. However, it sounds like both setups could be throttled - the Iris Pro due to power and the dGPU based on heat.

Iris Pro can be throttled from heat too.

Someone could argue its easier to dissipate heat when it is separated and not all on one spot

Redesign lover here.
Thinner is a huge part of it. I am a huge lover of the MacBook Pro. I use one everyday. But Honestly, every time I use it I cringe because it is so thick. Call me crazy. And I know its pointless to wish for a magical device that is paper thin had tons of battery and tons of features and performance. But I know that it can be thinner, there are other notebooks with 28W Cpus that are thinner and still have sufficient battey life. Also it has been 4 years since the last redesign so Apple must have more tricks to cooling devices batter and optimizing battery.

Honestly, if Apple slapped a skylake CPU, forcetouch, new retina Display in the MacBook Air, even if its only like 2304x1440. I would hugely HUGELY prefer that machine to the MacBook Pro. I would never get the Macbook air as my primary now because that old screen is a deal breaker. I understand that it is a good chance Apple will never update the MacBook Air anymore.

Or if you made the rMacBook slightly thicker enough to add a 15W CPU and fan, and then a USB-A port, that would be my notebook of choice.

In reality, I know whenever the next MBP redesign is, it won't be able to get very much thinner if they choose to keep same processors, and not too sacrifice battery.

And then finally color options are big for me as well. Even though they don't affect performance a space grey MBP would be so cool to me, I also like gold too.

And yea, smaller bezels would be awesome too.

I think I want the same. Just replaced my MacBook for a iPad pro, but I loved that computer. My favorite Mac ever !
If the new RMBP are closer to the MacBook I will be super happy. Of course they won't be the same thickness, but some refinement, bit of slimming and will be superb.

Also I should chime in here that I need a computer that does 3D well [interior and product design]. However I think the days of the IGP are gone. Get a PS4 if you want to game.

Has throttling been an issue on the current Iris Pro models? What about on the current ones with the dGPU?

btw... who says the rMBPs will stay at 85W?
Should they really ditch MagSafe in favor of USB-C they could go up to 100W within the specs of the standard.

i'm hoping for apple to skip maxwell and go straight to pascal which is coming out in june

This would, from what I have gathered from reading the many, many posts in this thread, mean that Apple would have to care about being the best with the latest tech, which is not what Apple are about... at least with the MBP. If they were:
1. We would have already had an update of the 15" last year to Broadwell
2. Previous iterations of the MBP would have had better dGPUs.

It seems that there are a number of people who want gaming performance and thus want Apple to wait until the new GPUs are released... but Apple don't make the MBP for gamers. they make them for business/professional users. So, unless there is going to be a huge about face from Apple in how they design and market their machines, I can't see them waiting until June just for a better GPU. Especially as they are already so far behind the competition with the current line up.

I'd say the the rMBP has aged quite well.

To be honest, I'm not sure what the re-design lovers expect.
Let's look at competitor... like Dell (but i could point MANY other ), wouldn't it be nice to remove that HUGE bezel around the screen?? A re-design lover would dig that!

The MacBook lineis the last with a Fisher Price bezel..... the Air probably being the worst

Now wouldn't a screen like that be gorgeous?? instead of

Design wise the MBP is better, but that screen ugh!!

If Apple fails to deliver something tempting, the Dell is my favorite besides the Surface Pro. The only design flaw of the XPS in my opinion is this:

UGGGGLLLLYYYY

Aaaaahhh.
Mmmmm.
The bezel on the XPS makes me more than a little hot under the collar.
I mean look at it.
Look at it!
So, so sexy.

I really hate the rest of it though, can't stand black computers.
Looking at it is like taking a cheese grater to my eyes.
(MY eyes, I'm the problem here, I'm aware of that ;) )

God, if Apple just keeps the overall design of the rMBP and shrinks the bezel I might end up perpetrating unspeakable acts of affect upon it.

And to think that we had THAT before!!!

OMG could this be a leak?
I feel so sad that everything at the presentation will be about the new apple watch wristbands

LOL exactly my tag line!
Now... Is this legit?
I still don't think you can or should fill 2 hour long event with wristbands.. A smaller iPad pro and a smaller iPhone that's been done already...
