Sigh...so disappointed. I know we shouldn't have expected anything at WWDC but I got my hopes up. I really need a new laptop before I start college this fall, and Apple is making it very difficult.

Hmm, looking at MacOS Sierra release date, it could be launched early fall alongside the new MBP, it just makes more sense for Apple to release it alongside a new OS (promo materials and etc.)

lack of communication is a strategy
if they tell you it's coming in oct- sales now drop
that's why they dont do that
Agreed but to play devils advocate, this is exactly what they do with the iPhone, their most important product line, and one that people upgrade far more often than a computer (meaning iPhone users wouldn't feel stuck on old hardware for the same length of time).

Apple needs mac OS to stay the number one choice for developers (web as well as mobile apps). It keeps the entire ecosystem healthy. It keeps more apps and websites optimized for OS X (mac OS) and iOS. Having a little more care for these users (as they always claim at WWDC) by providing some regular expectation of updates (even as general as MacBooks Pros always updated in the fall) as they have done for OS updates for a while now, would actually benefit Apple more than the lost sales would hurt.

I give up. figured I be buying a new mbp or mb or mba this June. guess not.

I used a Razer stealth this spring to finish classes and work and then sent it to my dad last week. we bought it for him, but I needed something more powerful to finish the semester. Win 10 blows, but frankly, osx's downwards trajectory is pushing me back to a pure BSD or Linux.

I will now state this as a fact, and a fact that no one in the universe can refute: the iPhone is great, but it is killing their serious side to computing. Their move into the realm of Sony is closer than we think. They want to be a content and consumable gadget company. it's happening folks. I bet their is no Mac OS or Mac product come 2020. mark it in your calendars.

I prefer OSX to Windows. I enjoy the integration and interactivity between my MBP, iMac, iPhone, and iPad. I like having my entire purchased music library available on all my devices hassle free and not have to pay $120 a year for the privilege. I like how the pictures and videos on my iPhone upload to the cloud are a pretty seamlessly available on my other devices. I like searching for a map address on my MBP, leaving in my car and having access to that address in the recents on my phone. I like being able to continue message conversations on whatever device I have in my hand or lap. I like how thoughtless and seamless most of this functions.

The ecosystem wasn't just thought up by a marketing department to keep everyone in a choke hold. I mean really, it's pretty awesome, that's why most are in it in the first place.

Sure apple ****ed up with their hardware release schedule, but jumping ship to Windows and a Dell or a Razer in disgust..........!?. I mean, you're giving up a lot of the good stuff, particularly if you own multiple Apple devices. It's more than just the hardware.

And....hardware releases are pretty much guaranteed Q4 this year.

 Too soon?

I'm honestly really surprised you don't know anyone that uses iMessage. I personally don't know anyone that has an iPhone that doesn't use iMessage. I rarely text people as almost everyone I know has an iPhone and that's the default for iPhone to iPhone communication over message. I'm curious, what do you use for text based communication?

It's Line where I live, not sure my wife has ever opened iMessage on her iPhone.

Guys, I want to be real clear when I say that:

Apple created an entirely new file system that works for every device they make.

This is in addition to the new Programming language they made. But sure, Apple is just spiraling down in complacency.

Wait, what is there not to like with Sierra? All I see is productivity and privacy improvements which is supposed to be a good thing.

I wonder if Swift will ever be ported for the web, that'll solve all the nuisance that comes with Web Development

So rumours have been Q4 release. Apple is missing the back to school market, which I think is crazy. I can't believe that they will also miss the holiday season, which means new computers will be in the stores for November.

They're not going to announce (much) ahead of availability, because Osborne effect.

I know right! Which makes me really doubt that they'll not release at least the redesign 13" MBP before back to school market.

My guess is:
13" MBP available now (before back to school)
15" MBP fall release

If I recall, Apple has done this before.

And that unity between their devices is exactly why I want a new Skylake Mac so badly...

Still, the fact that they're doing something right doesn't mean that it still wasn't telling how little of the keynote was spent on MacOS in favor of iOS and its gimmicks. They may not be "spiraling down", but that keynote sure skewed their priorities in many peoples' eyes.

Good lord people have been complaining about the damn file system for years. I bet most people here don't get how big a deal this is.

Anyway, I predicted we'd see hardware today and Apple proved that wrong. I can't see an announcement in September, though maybe it makes sense with a weak iPhone to save something cool like the MBP for that event. But I'm still hedging on October announcement for November sales. Awful, but as someone who's been waiting to jump ship from Microsoft for over a year I have no choice but to wait...

And maybe, you know, actually update the software on my 2007 Desktop and 2012 Laptop now that I know I'll have to rely on those machines for at least six more months (long story I won't go into again).

But for the moment I'm going to take a break from lurking/sniping this forum for a bit. I suggest everyone else do the same. Nothing to see here now anyway.

Just had to recreate an account to share my feelings.
I was around when we were all waiting for Haswell...
The direction given by Apple seems pretty clear. Focus on China and Apple Pay. That's why this crazy acquisition of that Uber competitor, that's why plastic red wristband apple watch, that's why golden iphone 6+...
Maybe by the end of the year, there will be an all new macbook that rocks. But honestly, the fact that updates come so late clearly shows their lack of interest in that product. The iphone is the big star, no matter what, they will update it every year. Even if there's nothing new, they'll tell you a story. But on the Macbook Pro, they're not even trying anymore. The Mac Pro is even worse and considering the fact that they never updated their Thunderbolt display, it's all just very sad.

But even the iPhone is moving to a 3 year cycle for the physical design. Apple seems to think the name brand alone is enough to sell their hardware. Hopefully their downward spiral will inspire some actual innovation by competitors.

I think it is already inspiring Microsoft quite a lot.
Their Surface wasnt very attractive to me, but it is an admiring bet. Apple is trying so hard to make people buy every single device: a macbook or imac (or both); an iPad; and iPhone; and an apple watch... Microsoft tried to merge two of them, and they seem to be getting somewhere with the Surface Book. I need to take a look at how Illustrator runs on the machine, cause now i'm seriously considering to switch. Later this year, when Microsoft updates ahah ; )

I think the reason they didn't release it was that the Pascal/Polaris mobile GPUs were not ready yet. Simplest explanation.

Apple just lost my business by not showing or even announcing a Skylake rMBP, redesign or not. This company has completely lost its focus. I'll be getting the XPS 13 tomorrow; I'll check back in on Apple's lineup in five years when I need a new laptop, but I doubt they'll be making any computers by then.

Surface 3 user here. I bought the Surface 3 to replace my Nexus 7 and supplement my 2011 MBP (so I don't have to carry that beast around). If you need a computer that can also double as a drawing/note taking tool, the Surface line is great. If you are expecting it to match an iPad or Android tablet in functionality, you will be disappointed with the lack of apps. I also find Windows 10 less satisfying to use than Mac OS and with my workflow being more app oriented, my feelings on the Surface line is mixed.

That being said, if the Surface Pro 5 comes out with Thunderbolt 3, you will probably be able to buy a mid-ranged Surface Pro 5, dock, cover, and Pen for about $1700. That's basically a workstation, laptop, and tablet in one for the price of a MacBook Pro. My love of Mac OS and iOS will (probably) keep me in the Apple camp for the foreseeable future, but I'll admit I'll have Windows envy for the first time in my life with regard to the design of their solution.

Edit: Update the price - more expensive than I thought and changed MacBook to MacBook Pro.

Damn this thread in the last few hours has moved like molasses. Kind of refreshing. Probably will have sold my 15" MacBook Pro, and am now in the position to look at the ultrabook lineups basically. Really a bummer with no new hardware updates, but the 13" Pros and Airs are still looking decent.

Switching to Windows is not the solution.

Be patient. Apple has underscored their commitment to the Mac at WWDC. macOS is getting some incredible new technologies and innovations that just dominate over anything else out there. macOS is more secure, offers greater stability, better performance, and seamless workflows across all your devices.

The rumors suggest the refreshed MBP line coming soon is going to offer some of the most compelling advancements in the history of the product line. If you buy a Dell now, you'll regret it very soon when the new MacBook Pros are unveiled.

There's nothing really novel about this. MS is doing the same thing and both are playing catchup to "next-gen" file systems found on Linux.

Alot of features of their new APFS are borrowed from the likes of Ext4 and ZFS.

Nooo0 you guys will regret not waiting for the new mbp!

Indeed, Windows is a dead platform. Almost nothing good is happening over there anymore in terms of anything. Apps abandoned, developers fleeing for Apple/Google platforms, and complete rejection by consumers.

While the XPS may have some tempting specs, the product line has all kinds of defects discussed over on notebookreview. Bad displays, noisy power, ports incorrectly aligned with the shell so you cannot connect devices, excessive CPU throttling, etc. And of course all of it backed by Dell's lousy approach to customer service.
