Just registered to type this. I've been a longtime Windows and Linux user (and if it wasn't for Office I'd have already left for good) but the fact of the matter is this:

Microsoft for whatever reason believesd, people want forced updates, spyware and cloud first services on their PCs, which for me couldn't be further from the truth. My current laptop is from Sony Vaio 2011 the battery life is laughable (90 minutes with average brightness!), and a new battery would set me back 350 $ of course I'm not going to pay that for a 5 year old machine.
So I've looked at other options:

1. Surface Pro 4: What the hell Microsoft? A gorgeaus and full fleged computer in a great format but it can't run without Bluescreens and stability issues? Sorry great idea but the execution has me very worried and there is no MS store to be found in Austria, so maybe the SP 5 can do something about it.

2. Surfacebook: Great idea but even worse execution for n insane pricetag given the hardware-software problems. 1.800 bucks and issues plus dealing with an outsourced customer service? Serioulsy that's just insane.

3. Dell XPS: I honestly think Dell has the closest thing to a MBP right now. I love their "borderless" design and display technology but their customer service has gone downhill, the trackpad has some scrolling issues and worst of all it runs Windows 10. An hybrid OS forcing me to update, redo my default programs and uninstalls software without permission is not my idea of an OS that is mine. Also I would love a better resolution but I fail to see the need for a touchscreen on notebooks (maybe I'm wrong...), so paying almost + 300 $ for something I won't ever use feels false and at that pricerange I'm almost in the 15' MBP category.

4. MBP: I want the aluminium chasis, a gorgeaus display and thanks to Bootcamp I can just install my beloved Windows7, Linux and won't have to ever look back. So why haven't I bought one already? Well here is the thing, the MBP could need a user replaceable battery and in my mind a 4k screen, plus a display port. So my hopes for yesterday were high and sadly I must say, I'm very disappointed sure I could buy a second hand one but I'd rather pay a bit more and have the latest and greatest for my needs. Also enough with the thinner = better stuff...I've seen it with a few devices now it's not always the case the SP 4, XPS and the MBA are way too athin for my liking. I mean, I get it Apple wants to release the MBP alongside Sierra but whats so bad about releasing it now and then update it to Sierra?

So yeah I guess I have to wait but for sure won't wait till next year because of the very bad battery life of my Vaio. Btw. I honestly fear the 2 tech giants (MS + Apple) should reconsider their focus, there is a reason why IoS and WinMobile are for mobile devices so why not focus on the more productivity orientated stuff? You know the stuff people are willing to pay top dollar for? So sick of that cloud, mobile first trend of the last few years.

A stupid watch, fitness trackers are gimmicky and "nice to have" but they won't allow anyone to be more productive.

A few of you need to take a big step back and look at what you've been doing for the past god-knows-how-many months.

Consider this:
A congregation of (normal) tech savvy consumers are gathered in a room.

Now consider this statement:
"In September, the month where Apple's new redesigned MBP is expected to release; it will be 1.5 years since the last rMBP update, where the normal cycle is 9-10 months."

If you said this to the hypothetical room of people, how many would agree with the toxic behaviour displayed by some on this thread? Not simply posts criticising Apple, but genuinely toxic behaviour?

You could say the answer is most/all of them, but if you can honestly tell me you believe that for a second then you seriously need to re-evaluate yourself and what you're doing.

Edit: Something else you should ask yourself:
If, during 2015, Apple released new rMBPs at WWDC instead of March, how would your reaction to the refresh cycle change?
(July 2014 - March 2015 - September(?) 2016, in contrast to:
July 2014 - June 2015 - September(?) 2016)

I'm honestly really surprised you don't know anyone that uses iMessage. I personally don't know anyone that has an iPhone that doesn't use iMessage. I rarely text people as almost everyone I know has an iPhone and that's the default for iPhone to iPhone communication over message. I'm curious, what do you use for text based communication?
I done a quick poll at the office, half of whom are iPhone users. Engineering office so all well educated professionals, about 1 in 10 uses imessage, just for the family messages.
All use either text or or whatsapp or wechat which is also free and isn't OS specific.

yeah, people are just being drama llamas.

as usual, we let our hopes build up, and were sorely disappointed by the lack of new hardware (should have listened to Gurman/MCK).

as for WWDC, i'm genuinely excited for the new stuff coming in macOS and iOS - the messages craziness got me scratching my head a bit, but the rest of the content was genuinely interesting, and there seems to be a lot still going on. overall a good event in my book.

I also think iMessage is country by country...where WhatsApp is much more used in certain regions, LINE is more popular in parts of Asia.. so chat app preference is globally regional

I know people keep saying that there's no way the next refresh we see will include kaby lake, why not? Yes supposedly the desktop chips will come out first, but if I'm not mistaken that was not the case with skylake, as soon as it came out oems released their laptops with skylake , like dell with the dell XPS 13 refresh and the updated XPS 15, or am I mistaken?

Almost everybody I know, iPhone users or not, use WhatsApp - there was a time when I wanted to get an iPhone because it was the best messaging app and certain family members only had iMessage, but that time has passed fortunately. Also, WhatsApp calling works pretty well too.

To be honest, FaceTime is a pain, it rings when the other person clearly was not even online (i.e. connected) which causes causes some problems (I called you, it rang etc..) and I'm surprised Apple never sorted out such basic things (me, working in Telecoms, this is basic stuff..), and I have endless examples of when I called my GF using FT and it was ringing, and her iPad (sitting next to her..) didn't register that call. This is just poor engineering.

Somehow, I think Apple's strategy with keeping iMessage and FT purely on apple devices didn't quite pan out, I wonder how things would have progressed if they ported to windows and android?

You're not mistaken. While laptop chips were available quickly, those chips were not the successors of the ones Apple uses. They use chips that are higher-end (better iGPU, more LLC, among others), and those come out much later.

Those Kaby Lakes are coming at the earliest 2Q17 if i'm not mistaken.

I'm an optimist. What if they promote the Touch ID/Apple Watch unlock feature by giving away an Apple Watch when you buy a new MBP (in Sept/Oct). "Sorry for taking so long to get our **** together, but we knew you weren't going anywhere because we've got you by the balls. Here's a free watch to trap you in our ecosystem even further."

Not a chance in hell.

Good morning everyone, glad to see that nothing much has changed from yesterday.

Dang, no support for Time Machine back ups too? What is the point of Time Machine then in macOS?

Wait, can someone please give more information about this?
No more support for Time Machine back ups?! Really?!

And....hardware releases are pretty much guaranteed Q4 this year.

Nothing more is guaranteed, at this point.
Every computer of Apple Line is eons outdated.
Maybe they'll update them in July, maybe in September, maybe October, maybe 2017.
Who knows.

...sigh.

Nope.

Appropriate Skylake CPUs for Apple Laptops came up one year after the "Skylake release".
The CPU for 15" came up a month ago.
So no way, not at all.

The 13" ones are still not released - the i7 is still in status announced and not launched. No idea whats going on over at Intel. Just because Sony has gotten 500 or 1000 chips doesn't mean they are in mass production. Apple will certainly need more than 100 / week.

Also - it appears that each and every 13 or 15" laptop from Sony etc using the chips have some issues. Least the idea that im getting from reports in this lovely thread here.

Edit - The 13XPS use a 15W chip, 13 rMBP traditionally use the version which run at 28W this generation.

This is now the second biggest thread EVER in the Macbook Pro forum section. Number one? "Waiting for Haswell MBP Megathread"! That reached 621 pages, 15,518 posts before finally being locked.

New rMBPs with Haswell were announced ~555 pages in.

What does this tell us? We need to try harder, post more! Can you imagine telling your grandkids you participated in the second longest MBP thread on the internet when you were young? "Granddad, you're such a loser".

There are only 20 days left, the pressure is on!!

Well done everyone, well done. I do believe this is now the longest Mac thread in human history and my grandkids will be proud. "Granddad, please tell me again about how you spent 18 months waiting for a new computer, it's so funny!"

Mmmkay... warming up in acquisitions (e.g. LinkedIn, Minecraft). lol

It's okay to be frustrated with the wait but some people need to keep common sense. Any reasonable person wouldn't be expecting Apple to announce new hardware in WWDC.

Wwdc is june, software. September is IPhones and ipads, October is iMac and MacBooks, available for Xmas.

I think the problem is, is that most would have just been happy with Apple just slapping Skylake and TB3 in the current chassis. No need for revolution, just evolution.
Amen brother. That's what I want. I don't want a 4k screen. Too small for Windows.in boot camp.
However I believe Apple will release a 5k screen on MacBook pro.

I've been lurking on this thread since around January, hoping for some kind of an announcement, first at the march event and then at WWDC.

My machine at home is an old Core 2 Duo (currently running Windows 10) which I built around 2007. It's received upgrades along the way, but frankly - it needs to go. The difference in processing power is made all the more obvious after working on a 3.2 GHz i5 27" iMac all day at work, only to come home and start using that. I'm also done having a massive box sitting on my desk, there are more convenient options.

I duly tuned in to the keynote yesterday, foolishly excited (despite all evidence to the contrary!) awaiting the inevitable. After my initial disappointment (and stunned disbelief when emojis started appearing on screen) I started to face the prospect of at least 3 - probably more, who knows?! - months still using my dated Windows machine.

I couldn't. I mean, it just wouldn't be.... I mean, 2007?!.... yeah.

So, this morning I decided on some retail therapy. Like the majority of you, I simply cannot stomach spending full price on a new mbp from Apple with hugely outdated tech. Especially with an imminent refresh around the corner. I decided to go used instead.

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MacBook-P...8GB-Ram-128GB-SSD-6-MONTHS-OLD-/322140804028?

A spotless 2015 13 inch, 2.7GHz, 8GB, 256GB with only 1 charge cycle is now heading my way and should be here by the end of the week. £695 (as opposed to £1199 new) is acceptable to me. I can now happily use that at home (with a nice LG ultrawide) and evaluate my options if and when the new mbp's are finally released.

Very likely I'll sell the 2015 model or possibly pass it on to my parents, and take a hit on the resale value. At this point I really don't care if I lose a little money in the process. From what I've read, even after new models are released the old ones still hold their value fairly well anyway. I can then spec a lovely new maxed out 2016 version when Apple finally pulls their finger out.

So to those of you still hanging on, I commend you. I just couldn't face a further unknown period of waiting while still using a woeful Windows machine. I have work to do. For me this was the best option, and imo, a good compromise in the short term.

What's the advantage of using iMessage when not everyone has the same app (tip: Android users). If I use FB messenger or Whatsapp I get everyone on board, so why should I keep switching apps? iMessages sucks

gee

The TimeMachine thing was in reference to the APFS (APple File System) newly introduced in macOS. But for now it's not compatible with Time Machine nor can it be used as a bootdrive.

Anyone still use Timemachine? I cant even configure it beside what folders and what target without the help of 3rd parties. Over Wifi its very slow, too.

Forgive my ignorance, but I didn't understand anything.

I do!
What's the problem with Time Machine?
You buy an external hard disk, plug it in, open TM, format it, launch back-up, back-up done.
Fast and easy.

Can't lurk forever and need to get the page count up so somebody can tweet the link to Tim!

Been a Mac user since 1989 (gulp). The other day I used find my iPhone and there were eight devices - not including my two Apple TVs. Currently do most my work on a 27" 2013 i7 iMac/2013 i7 MacBook Air/12.9 iPad Pro. So I'm not somebody complaining for the sake of it - I'm a dedicated Apple customer.

Looking to get a sparkly new MBP 15 as I can't stand how bad the MBA's screen is anymore (especially when jumping to it from my iPad Pro) and I want to work more remotely. I am also thinking of a retina iMac.

I have the money and I want to spend it. But, for about the first time since 89, there is no new Mac that excites me. I'm used to paying top whack for Apple kit but not for stuff that's so old. (And let's be honest, there is something narcissistic about use Mac users that want to use the latest and greatest.) From the sounds of it, I'm not the only one and I'm deeply disappointed that Apple has let their hardware get so out-of-date. I've never once complained about Apple before and always been a bit of a fan boy. But if somebody asked me what Mac to get now (as they do a lot), I genuinely couldn't recommend one. That is a pretty bad state of affairs. I'm genuinely worried, almost as bad as the bleak days before Steve came back. (I was starting to assess how I could move to Windows but luckily I was saved from that nightmare scenario!)

Apple really does need to show the pros some love, it's still a sizeable chunk of their business that most companies would kill for, and as iPhone sales stutter, they need to remember that there's a whole professional world out there relying on top-class tools, not emojis.

Very disappointed at WWDC and have money to burn.
