I would love to get a new MacBook. Even with the discounts. I can't get myself to buy anything currently available.

No way Apple is putting all their eggs in a single basket (= all new products in a single media event). But then again, they may make a simultaneous launch of all platforms, seeing that WWDC focused in operating system/development ecosystem and continuity across platforms. However, a dedicated Mac launch event may be on the table since Practically all Mac products except for the new Macbook are due for a refresh. It's a tossup. But I'll imagine Apple will really want to push the sales of this year's iPhone, and diluting it with other Macs will limit their revenue potential.

I agree. If there will be no events until September that means that all mac line except the nMB will be over it's average release cycle. That's too much for a single event. So the event is either before or after September.

I honestly feel that at this point, Apple wants to get the launch of new Macs ASAP, but something (ehem AMD) is holding them back.

Their sales are weakening and even student buyers are wary because they know Apple pushed out a refresh/spec bump for the rMBPs annually since its release. Their stocks continue to plummet... IF I were an AAPL executive and IF there was something out of Apple's control that is delaying launch(es) of its product(s) that should be otherwise ready, I would be very, very, very, angry. (There is nothing more horrid than facing a delay, and blindly waiting for something to happen when you're responsible for so many stakeholder's investments and/or livelihood)

Skylake chips are ready, new-tech hinges are coming in, hell, the Chassis seems to be ready for production/assembly based on the pictures!

AMD is taking their sweet time making their Polaris chips available. I remember when they said that "the polaris lineup will be ready for back-to-school sales season". I hope they'll honor this statement and get the train rolling.

I don't see why not? Let me interest you in the latest 15" MBP. Why it has been on the market for over a year, the CPU is only 3 years old, and if you get the AMD FrankenGPU you never have to worry about drivers because Apple never updates them! The best part? You are paying a premium price for a notebook that is nowhere near current in technology. The Kool-aid is free though.

An AMD delay would be valid only for the top end 15", and in that case they could release the 13" and low end 15 before (which they have already done).
In fact they should have released the 13" for TWO months at least by now !

Waiting Since:
The new 12" MacBook came out last year.
Currently Using: 2011 13" MacBook Air base model (128GB/4GB RAM) as an iOS software dev...my fan revs to max often, builds take forever in Xcode, and I'm always out of space. :(
Features I'm Hoping For: slimmer design, space grey option, OLED touch bar, better keyboard, better display :D
Considering Buying/Jumping Ship For: the new 12" MacBook, but just can't do it.
Guesstimate For Skylake Announcement: August with mid-late September release ;)

Waiting since: October 2015
Using currently: early 2011 MacBook Pro 17" (2.2GBz, 16GB RAM, 500GB SSD) + Thunderbolt Display
What feature you hope for:
want: 16" 4k smaller bezels!!! (XPS Style)
want: 32GB RAM (64GB would be even better!)
want: Polaris
want: 2 TB3, HDMI 2.0, Magsafe,
want, but could live without: SDXC Reader, 2 USB A
Considering buying/jumping ship for : I'm thinking about the Dell XPS 15 a bit... but who am I kidding. The trackpad SUCKS just like every SINGLE other Windows Notebook. And Windows is generally a usability NIGHTMARE. Yes Windows 10 is the best Windows yet... and why? Because MS copied a lot of features macOS has. All things considered though... it is laughable at best.
(Just TRY and set a different ICC Profile for your display... just TRY it...)
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced: March 2016, June 2016,... 2016(?!)

So there is just about no chance of this coming out before September? Cause I really really really need to buy a Macbook before college (Starts August 22nd). I just don't wanna buy a 2015 macbook and have a new one come out in 1-2 months. But I need one for school. ****ing lost

Schools in the 1st world have computer labs.

For highly specialized things then I guess? We used to have computer rooms, twenty years ago, for students who write reports and stuff but now everyone has their own computer instead..
Some, but not all. Even for those who have one, they might not want to carry it everyday.

What about you?

Waiting since: Early 2015

Using currently : 15'' Asus X555L. i3 5005u, GT 920M, 256Gb SSD, 4Gb ram. 1366x768p screen. (also a desktop, 8gb, 1080p, i5 2500k, GTX 970, ssd and all that).

What feature you hope for: Same screen size with p3 panel, on a smaller chassis. 15'' laptop with Polaris GPU, Skylake CPU's, DDR4 and better battery life.

Considering buying/jumping ship for: I want to jump ship to Mac, not away from the Mac. I mainly use Windows for gaming. I have Ubuntu for programming (I study Computer Science), would like to have an OS where I can do everything, from programming to my hobbies like photo and all that. Leaving Windows for gaming-only.

Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced: Seems like any day from now till October...

What feature you hope for:
Design like the new MacBook, Skylake, USB C, Polaris, Ultra Retina display

Using currently: early 2011 MacBook Pro 15" (2.2GBz, 8GB RAM, 240GB SSD). I had the logic board replaced due to video card issues, and the lcd replaced due to kids stepping on my laptop issues. So this old baby has been through a lot!
Have a maxed out 2012 27" iMac (home)... but badly need a new laptop for work....

**told my father-in-law to WAIT don't buy the 2015 model back in Summer 2015 as I figured the new model would be released. He is on a 2007 model... now that is patience!
What feature you hope for:
retina screen - whenever I see the retina ones I drool...
touch ID would be great
lighter, better battery life

Considering buying/jumping ship for :I grew up a Windows guy, and was a builder/seller and supported everyone under the sun once they realized I knew what I was doing. I switched to Apple with this MacBook pro and have never looked back (except for my win VM's and the rare support call now -- I just say "Oh, Im on mac now, I don't know anything about windows anymore....).
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced: October 2015, March 2016, June 2016... so I guess I'll just be optimistic and say September 2016.

Using currently : 2011 13", MBP non-retina fat mac.
Considering buying/jumping ship for : Jumped ship for a 2015 MBPr 13" with 8gb Ram and 526 gb SSD.
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced : Fall / Winter.

don't know anymore what I want. Can work with my 15" rMBP late 2013 - sometimes it is to loud and to hot, meanwhile ugly screen
But my "new" XPS 15 with the 4k touchscreen and a super fast sm961 ssd (3198 MB/s read, 1847 MB/s write), 32gb memory is much better ...
I need both systems for work and if the next rMBP has a touchscreen, double nvme m.2 ssd, thunderbolt 3 I will buy it maxed out !

What do college kids need laptop computers for anyway? Notes during class? I used a laptop for that in law school for the first year, but it was too distracting. Research? Use your phone, you've got Google on that too. Email? Phone. All I can think of is paper writing, and technically that can be done on the phone too.

I think you'd only need a laptop if you need specialized software for a class like engineering. In those rare cases, a computer lab would suffice. Heck, the distraction-relieving quality of NOT having a laptop might outweigh the inconvenience costs.

Oh, and then there's stupid stuff you can't avoid like ExamSoft where your school expects you to have a laptop so you can type out a test.

I guess the better question is: why would a college student need an MBP over something like a cheap MBA? Surely any specialized software or testing program would have to work on something like that considering 99% of college students will be using something similar.

I personally own a Windows laptop at the moment. It's bulky, noisy, ugly and generally not ideal for university, especially when taking it to lectures. I've spoken to people with Macbooks, and they've all said how much it has improved their academic life in regards to organisation and even motivation.

I think most people definitely need a laptop for school/university. At least I do. Writing papers, other school assignments are so much easier doing on a laptop! Because of the bigger screen and because of the keyboard (I could definitely not write a papier or something like that on a phone lol). You can do a lot of things on a tablet/phone, but most things are much easier on a laptop imo. And only because of the screen I would already prefer a mbp over a mba.

Considering buying/jumping ship for: I want to move to a portable workstation, and so I may consider the Surface Book as a possible replacement.
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced: September - October.

I made a mad list comparing my current situation, which some of you might even have vs the new MacBook Pros:

So yeah, it's time to upgrade for sure!

You'd be surprised how much a laptop is needed these days. Even in high school, I needed access to a computer to do many assignments, download study guides, and type papers. (Typing a paper on a phone is a joke, so let's not pretend those are equals again, thank you).

No, I don't really think any college student "needs" an MBP, so if you truly do need a laptop for your coursework, waiting for a laptop that might not arrive in time might not be the best option. But we want our purchases to be worthwhile. MBA is an outdated computer and it's still quite expensive; it isn't worth paying over a G for a computer that'll probably be discontinued soon anyway. So either a nice PC laptop or the upcoming MBP if you insist on Apple/macOS (which I do).

I'll still have an iPad that I can use, but I don't plan on taking my desktop with me to college, so the laptop is really intended to be my main computer, for schoolwork or for just general being on the computer, which I am for a bulk of the day.

Waiting since: March, specifically the weeks before the Apple event when Mac rumors were circulating.
Using currently: 15" MacBook Pro Mid-2009, Haswell i7/GTX 760 PC build
Desired features: Significantly thinner and lighter. Same display size in smaller body. Display and speakers upgraded to 12" MacBook quality.
Considering buying/jumping ship for: 12" MacBook. My performance requirements are not as high as they used to be, but the screen size gives me pause. Alternatively, the rumored 13" MacBook.
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced: September, within a week of back-to-school ending
