Waiting since : December 2015
Using currently : A Macbook 2010 13" with one leg in the grave (non functioning keyboard, audio jack disconnects random, usb wobbly (only works in special position)) and a self built Windows desktop PC from 2012 (i5-3470k, AMD 7970, Samsung SSD and a few HDD).
Considering buying/jumping ship for: I'm gonna loan my dad's XPS 13 for a few weeks this summer because I'm waiting on the new MBP so I will see how I like that. If it works great I'm gonna buy that instead of MBP.
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced : September iPhone event

I think you're going to be disappointed. It's going to probably be a usb-c only affair and references to the Touchbar were found in Sierra. The only one of these that I can see happening is a smaller bezel.
Maybe there are 2 versions? The usual one without it and a special one with the touchpar. Razor tried something like that with their keyboard and needless to say it was slow as hell thanks to Synapse

Mechanical keys would be awesome but I understand why nobody is putting them into a laptop , too loud and expensive.

What do college kids need laptop computers for anyway? Notes during class? I used a laptop for that in law school for the first year, but it was too distracting. Research? Use your phone, you've got Google on that too. Email? Phone. All I can think of is paper writing, and technically that can be done on the phone too.

I think you'd only need a laptop if you need specialized software for a class like engineering. In those rare cases, a computer lab would suffice. Heck, the distraction-relieving quality of NOT having a laptop might outweigh the inconvenience costs.

Oh, and then there's stupid stuff you can't avoid like ExamSoft where your school expects you to have a laptop so you can type out a test.

I guess the better question is: why would a college student need an MBP over something like a cheap MBA? Surely any specialized software or testing program would have to work on something like that considering 99% of college students will be using something similar.

As an electrical engineering university student, I couldn't imagine not having my own personal laptop. Doing things like programming a microprocessor/CPLD, online quizzes, online homework, papers, etc would require me to spend 18 hours a day in a library. In this day and age owning a laptop, at least for engineering is a requirement.

Waiting since: August 2014
Using currently: HP Pavillion m6 Entertainment PC (6 Gigs RAM, AMD A10-4600M, 2.3 GHz, 16.3 in)
What feature you hope for:
want: 2k resolution Retina
want: 8GB RAM (16 GB would be nice, not holding my breath for that as the base)
want: Polaris
want: 1 USB 3.0 and Magsafe, then it can have as many USB C's as it wants. (Wouldn't mind HDMI 2.0/SD reader, once again not holding my breath)
Considering buying/jumping ship for :
I was originally considering a MacBook Air, however after comparing the prices, an extra couple hundred for a RMBP is really nothing. I've been PC my whole life but I figured it's time to give MacOS a try and see what it can do with my iPhone 6s. My current Windows 7 computer is reaching the end of its life. I've had it for 4/5 years, my breaking point was when I tried copying over 2 GB to my flash drive, it took 30 minutes then froze control panel. I'll still keep it for certain programs that don't exist on Mac like Atmel Studios, etc. Really hoping I like Mac, all my friends are telling me not to make the jump, I really want to prove them wrong.
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced: September 2016

I used a pen, and some paper when I went to college. I did just fine ;)
People used to send Mail and did just fine as well, but now they use E-Mail cause there is technical progress.

And why is everybody spamming this topic with this random crap about who they are and what they wish for? The topic finally slowed down and made it easy to follow. If you want to talk about your wishes and stuff, maybe create a different topic.

It is now a mandatory pass to stay on this topic.
So get in line and fill up the template with your info, otherwise you will be taken out, and quickly.

MBP 15 skylake will be released second half of October (current planning).

Apple and adapters.... We're already calling them ad-apple-ter.

Good luck with the wait.

John

I honestly feel that at this point, Apple wants to get the launch of new Macs ASAP, but something (ehem AMD) is holding them back.

They won't announce anything during their back-to-school promo. Simple as that. They won't cannibalize margins on new products with free stuff promised during that promo. So you're waiting until after September 5th minimally.

Agreed. Hopefully it doesn't go into October though, probably won't as by then too many people might have bought a laptop ready for school and so would have missed the boat? So hopefully for financial reasons, they rather announce/release in September to not lose out on that market share to competitors.

Usually you can't install apps on lab computers and some of them can save a student a lot of time. For instance, Zotero which is a notation tool, not sure if there is a cloud version but back in my day it was a browser add-on. Saved me tons of hours organizing my sources and spitting out a bibliography in mere seconds.

Waiting since : August 2016 is when I'll start "waiting".

Considering buying/jumping ship for: Current 13" rMBP, but I'm really against that.
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced : September event

All those things you mentioned can be accomplished with a laptop with more efficiency albeit the hassle of carrying a laptop with you. And besides, everybody needs a computer these days. In the day where i can comfortably and effeciently write my reports, take online exams, create and share presentations on my phone, sure, ill just use a phone. But that dayseems still pretty far sway.

Listed my MacBook Pro on eBay and Craigslist. I've had 4 people backing out on Craigslist and 7 on eBay ditching and not responding to me FeelsBadMan.

I've had difficulities selling Macs online the last years as well. Resell value is no longer a valid argument. It's starting to become something you must buy and plan to keep until it becomes obsolete, rather than a object which you can sell and upgrade with ease. Talked to other sellers as well, and they confirm falling interest.

In fact I use a 16GB iPad Air 2 as my daily portable driver at the moment. Good enough. Have a Hackintosh which I seldom use except for screen estate and power.

somebody on here with deeper knowledge of intel's ****-up? i'm being told that there are/will be new skylake steppings which are supposed to resolve issues with which apple didn't want to launch. i googled around and couldn't find anything except reports from january about avx instruction set issues which could lead to freezes.

I doubt they will patch that bug. It's more likely that others just have to work around it. Hardware is never bug free.

Waiting since : I dunno, March? Whenever it was my 2.5 year old spilled water on my rMB
Using currently : uh...I pay bills on my wife's 2008 17" MBP. I can't really do much else with it or the fan spins up and drowns out all hearing. Otherwise I've been using my iPad and iPhone
What feature you hope for : a real, physical, skylake rMBP!

I'm fine with USB-C (obviously, or I wouldn't have had a rMB), I'm fine with the touch bar (I'd love to have a key for gmail that shows how many unread messages I have in my inbox), I'm fine with slimmer but with similar or better battery life

Considering buying/jumping ship for : honestly, I'll buy a gol-durned tank of an MSI gaming laptop for $1350 before I'll buy a 3 year old processor and a 2-year old dGPU for $2500 ... just about to do it, too, but I really want to see the new rMBP first
Your guesstimate when Skylake will be announced : HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

honestly? Apple just did a "platform" event where they went over all the software platforms. I can see a "hardware" event in September. Apple = integrated hardware + software, after all...
