I could go Windows, I am just scared to. The last time I used a PC was a long time ago and the obvious safety concerns are a turn off. Obviously Mac's aren't 100% safe, but still much safer than a PC. The XPS performance, size, and weight is perfect for my needs. I have been having issues for the last 3-4 months with my 2011 Pro and I have been holding off for the next Pro model. I'm just hoping for a release soon and a full redesign. I'm sure many of us are. lol

The XPS is very tempting, but I would regret the purchase if Apple releases what I really want.

They've started to advertise Thunderbolt 3!

https://thunderbolttechnology.net/sites/all/themes/tb/images/Thunderbolt3_infographic_100715.jpg

With the eGPU support and the 40Gbps bandwidth, for me personally, I cannot see any need for a faster Thunderbolt 4 for many many years. What could they add other than 80Gbps bandwidth and maybe 8K monitor support?

I really hope that 16GB won't be the maximum RAM, because this is something that for me would really shorten the lifetime of the Skylake MBP.

Also a problem now is being able to sell my current Thunderbolt 2 MBP at a decent price so I can afford the new one. (I'm currently a student)

New Mac Pro... 4-inch iPhone rumors... Skylake for the laptop family... rMBP redesign... 10th anniversay MBP... and Mac mini?

It seems they have a lot of reasons to do a early 2016 event to announce all this.

I could go Windows, I am just scared to. The last time I used a PC was a long time ago and the obvious safety concerns are a turn off.

It is like day and night from old OS like Vista or 7 to W8.1 or 10. If you are scared to virus... don't be. Just don't click on those "click here to win an iPhone" adds and don't download files from unknow webs and you'll be virus free even without an AV. Seriously, I wll be more concern about privacity than security... and about that I'm not really sure if Microsoft just said what the others companies don't dare to do or if it's a real deal...but I don't think it can be more intrusive than google, web cookies, facebook, etc... also if you are paranoid enought you can allways use a local account.

I'm really enjoying W10 in my main workstation and if I finally buy the new rMBP I will bootcamp it 100% sure to have both OS. The real drawback is that today, it's still an unnfinished OS.

Windows 10 is pretty good, I actually prefer it over Mac OS, especially considering the horrible UI lag on some retina macbook pros. Some people are experiencing issues but it is a new release and should settle down, windows 7 was pretty stable eventually. I understand that some people might still have a preference for mac os, but the total disdain for windows just reeks of heavy bias because the two OS's are simply not worlds apart like they used to be. It is more a matter of personal preference now and the kind of software one is most interested in using, I have not had a single issue with viruses ever since using windows xp. I do think windows vista and windows 8 were quite disappointing and during these times Mac OS was easily superior.

I am actually more interested in the up and coming macbook pro more due to the quality of hardware, good battery life and hopefully a pretty nice screen. Boot camping with windows should make it pretty sweet.

I find it a bit worrying, that we haven't seen any leaks for the new macbook pro.
I really hope that we'll be able to buy a new and hopefully redesigned macbook pro in march.
I don't know about you guys, but I wouldn't want to wait til June (for example), it just seems ages away.

I think it is too early for rumors. Even if there will be a release in January the rumors might only pop up in late December early January. Anyway, I have a similar struggle that I would really like to upgrade from my Air, but then again it is very much a first world problem…

Don't know if it's just me but what is THIS?

From the TB3 infographic above. Is this perhaps our new rMBP? It's obviously a rendering of a laptop but looks a lot like a Mac.

And todays rMBP (which is also doesn't match, shape-wise):

Probably nothing and would be a first, of its kind, leak coming from Intel.

Funny idea, but I'd guess it's just *some laptop design a PR guy created in Photoshop*. It looks unrealistically thin (much thinner than the rMB, compare the USB-C sizes to the overall size), and I if Intel actually has access to prototype Apple hardware, I don't think the person responsible for Thunderbolt PR knows about any details.

Actually I'm more scared by this "MBP", but as senthor says, it's probably just a random laptop design.

Anyway TB3 seems really a big improvement, can't wait to see it on the rMBP.
I'm also hoping that Apple will keep the 15" rMBP a powerful laptop, instead of making it slimmer.

So would a rMBP with TB3 be ready to utilize an eGPU? What is needed inside of the machine, besides the TB3? Does OS X need to have some type of support?

It would be ready, no additional hardware required. What will probably happen is that eGPU support will only be enabled natively on Windows, with OS X native support coming in later without having to modify kext files like current TB2 implementations require the user to do.

This wait is frustrating and confusing. I stopped by a local Apple store to speak with an employee there that I have dealt with a few times only to leave more confused. He said he highly doubts we will get a new Pro by the end of the year and even said he's 50/50 we will get one before summer 2016. He referenced Apple being late to the party and they could hold off the launch to do something bigger than just a Skylake upgrade + redesign. Would that mean skipping Skylake? He then mentioned January 2016 being an anniversary that Apple may want to take advantage of from a marketing point of view.

In his own words employees aren't given top secret information (obviously), he just stays informed with this forum and various other internet outlets. Normally I don't care to wait, but I need to make a decision on an upgrade. I would rather not make a purchase now to only regret it 2-3 months from now. I would rather just deal with my current Mac issues and wait.

How badly do you need the purchase? If not, then wait.

I made the mistake of buying in just before a new MBP with new processor architecture was launched back in 2010. While it still serves me well today, you never want to miss out on a new generation of processor, especially if it's a significant one.

My guess is a Skylake version will come in 2016 at WWDC or earlier, possibly with a new redesign. News earlier this summer, was that the next processor (Cannonlake) was delayed till 2017. I don't think Apple can afford to drag out the current Broadwell chip for that long.

Cannonlake is no longer the next processor after Skylake. Because Cannonlake is delayed until 2017, Intel announced the successor to Skylake would be a new microarchitecture in the form of Kaby Lake. It's scheduled to launch Q3 2016.

And to Alloy201, I would agree that if you can hold off on a new MBP for a few more months, wait. The appropriate HQ chips for the 15" MBP at least have not yet been announced by Intel, so there's basically no way for a 15" MBP Skylake update before Q1 2016. And I'm not sure what could possibly be "bigger than just a Skylake update + redesign." A redesign to the MBP line only happens about once every 4 years, so that's about as big as it gets. Another poster a few pages back speculated on Apple delaying any kind of update at all until Kaby Lake, but I think expecting Apple to wait that long for an update and skip 2 CPU generations (in the 15" at least) would be ridiculous.

Thanks, I did not know that.
If Kaby Lake is Q3, it would make sense for an announcement at WWDC. :)

The current design is still nice, but starting to look a bit dated. Looks like Oct 2008 was when the uni-body design first appeared. We're 7 plus years in...it's long overdue for a redesign.

Skylake came out in Q3 of this year (August) and yet here we are.

GT4e and GT3e Kaby Lake CPUs are slated for Q1 2017, and Cannonlake for 2018. Q3-Q4 Kaby Lake CPUs are GT2 and therefore not suitable for the 2016 rMBP.

I figure one of the reasons we get leaks so long beforehand regarding iPhones is because it hits the factories a lot sooner as they have to manufacture so many of them before they'er available for sale. How about MBP? How many do they produce before they're announce you reckon? That would be useful to perhaps establish some sort of timeline on when we *should* start seeing part leaks etc, to be inline with a march release.

Do they need a month to produce proper bulk? With iPhones they need severals months..
