One additional reason we might not see an updated MBP this year is the Infinity display. Dell has stated that it licensed the technology from Sharp, and that it has an exclusivity deal. The question is how long that deal runs, different sources say either August 2015 or December 2015. Either way, Apple might be interested in the technology, as it is getting excellent reviews especially in color reproduction, brightness and contrast. Apple has just switched to Sharp for the iPad Pro display.
So maybe Apples redesign plans include this display technology, and they have to wait for the exclusivity deal to end.
At least I hope so, as a redesigned rMBP with smaller bezels, smaller footprint and 100% Adobe RGB would be awesome.
That makes a lot of sense actually. I hope Apple does switch to the technology and changes their Mac design to be something innovate and sleek again.

About the 10-bit topic.

After some search I've found that in order to take full and real advantage of 10-bit you need OS + Hardware w/ driver + Software + Monitor supporting 10-bit tech all together.

The only GPUs that really support 10-bit are Quadro and FirePro. So future rMBP with intel iGPU are out of the table until intel decides to make them 10-bit.

Nvidia GTX doesn't support it, I can tell you by first hand, just checked my GTX 970 only allows 8-bpc and for what I've read not even the Titan series support it, only Quadro series.

AMD Radeon series do a color emulation up to 10 - 12 bits, but I can't check the difference between a Radeon and Firepro since my GPU doesn't support 10-bit and almost everything on the internet works at 8-bit sRGB, so the only way to do that would be in real life while editing a 14-bit RAW with color gradients using a Mac Pro and a Eizo / Nec monitor.

But what I can tell you is that even AMD recomends FirePro for 10-bit so it seems that the color emulation isn't a big deal and (again maybe) it is just a bit better than a Nvidia GTX 8-bit gpu on the 10-bit panel but not a big deal.

There is a thread at amd, the last coment shares the amd team response. https://community.amd.com/thread/171743

So...

Kaby Lake 10-bit decode is still pointless for most if not all the MBP users unless Apple goes for quadro / firepro mobile gpus and 10-bit panels. If the solution is using a quadro / firepro eGPU you could do it with Skylake too.

The redesign should come with Skylake, and the 10th Anniversary at January sounds good for at least at announcement event.

Really hoping for a December event but seems unlikely... If not it will probably happen in January-February, I can't see Apple waiting longer than that when everyone is releasing new ****, regardless of whether it's not the same Skylake CPUs. January would probably make more sense than February seeing as it's right after Christmas and people get money during the holiday? Also past events have happened in January.

Skylake doesn't have "partial" HEVC H.265, it's actually fully hardware accelerated. Partial would mean that the CPU and GPU are working together to decode the stream just like in Haswell and Broadwell. Both SL and KL are able to display 10bit colour depth on screen, the difference lies in that Kaby Lake just adds the ability to decode 10 bit HEVC streams in hardware. Skylake on the other hand has to use a "partial" decoding scheme only for 10bit HEVC encoded content but 8bit is fully hardware accelerated.

Intel indicated in their 2014 developer conference that Skylake would only be able to hardware decode 8-bit HEVC content but that it's nextgen platform would bring full hardware HEVC/10-bit decode." Now when Intel shared that information, the assumption was that Cannonlake would be the nextgen platform. Now we know it's going to be Kaby Lake.

Skylake has "full hardware HEVC decode" mind that it's in 8 bit and not 10 as by anandtech's review:

"Whereas Broadwell implemented HEVC decoding in a "hybrid" fashion using a combination of CPU resources, GPU shaders, and existing GPU video decode blocks, Skylake gets a full, low power fixed function HEVC decoder. For desktop users this shouldn't impact things by too much - maybe improve compatibility a tad - but for mobile platforms this should significantly cut down on the amount of power consumed by HEVC decoding and increase the size and bitrate that the CPU can decode. Going hand-in-hand with HEVC decoding, HEVC encoding is now also an option with Intel's QuickSync encoder, allowing for quicker HEVC transcoding, or more likely real-time HEVC uses such as video conferencing." -Anandtech

That fixed function hardware counts as hardware accelerated. KL just adds 10 bit HEVC content support to that already present fixed function hardware. Skylake must decode said 10-bit content in a hybrid fashion but 8 bit is fully hardware accelerated.

So Apple seems to be hellbent on getting dGPUs out of their lineup. The new iMac 4k just has the Iris Pro 6200 as the only option whereas previously it had a dGPU option. This only convinces me that there will be no dGPU on the high end 15" as Apple sees them as unnecessary now that Intel's offerings are competitive on compute, with the GT4e fuelling the fire. I suspected this when they decided to remove the 650m on the entry level 15" model and only leave the Iris Pro 5200, when adding the 750m (a direct replacement to the 650m) didn't really increased costs in any way. Instead they decided to relegate it to the high end model just like in the previous iMac lineup. Add to that the fact that the next mobile dGPU offerings from both Nvidia (Pascal) and AMD (Artic Islands) are slated to be released on late 2016. Which contradicts the rumoured time frame of release of the next gen rMBP.

I don't think dGPUs are going away anytime soon. Unless external GPUs drop considerably in price that is.

I'd put my money on the status quo remaining on the current line up of rMBPs. The AMD dGPU will be updated with another obscure chip from AMD, again.

The 1º generation of Macbook Pro was announced in January 2006. A 10th anniversary event could be a thing for the redesign announcement.

Skylake is the big deal here: up to 64gb ddr4, pci-e 4, wireless charging, wi-gig, integrated iGPU cache memory, thunderbolt 3 and of course the more gpu power and more energetic efficiency.

Kaby Lake it's just a minor refresh, wouldn't match a redesign.
A 10 year anniversary release would indeed be appropriate now that I come to think about it.

I can already hear Cooks voice on the stage:

"Exactly ten years ago we decided that professionals needed a new kind of powerful tool, one that built on the foundations of our Powermacs. With an aluminum (even though it's called aluminium!) case and powerful hardware, photographers, video editors and designers have been able to do fantastic things on the go. We set a whole new standard for high quality laptops. 2016 is the year we introduce the future of the MacBook Pro. And to tell you more about this, let me welcome up Dan Riccio on the stage".

I could live with January for sure :)

Still no leaks what so ever.
Starting to lose hope for an early release.
I pulled the trigger early october with a refurb 2015 model, and everyday I am more happy about my choice, I could have waited, but nothing stops me from reselling it if I really want the new one, and in the meantime I can enjoy this one!

Don't know if it is appropriate to post it here but here is the first unprofessional extended review of the xps 15 with a lot of comparisons with the macbook pro:

If apple can just reduce the bezel size upgrade the screen in the next refresh with skylake chips, I will finally purchase my first macbook pro.

God that guy is just excruciating to watch. However, I am interested in that laptop.

Nice one! Except it's going to be introduced by Phill Schiller instead of Dan ;)

Are we still looking at an early 2016 release for the 28W skylake processors for the rMBP 13, or has this been changed?

Earlyish 2016 I'd guess. There are a few that have launched, but not all (according to the Intel Website). My assumption is that Apple would want to take advantage of holiday sales so if there is an announcement it would be made or imminent.

The MacRumors post on the Skylake series of processors states that the processors for the MBA and rMBP will be out by early 2016. How come the Dell XPS/Surface Book have been updated with skylake processors then?

They aren't the same chips that Apple uses. Apple's are higher specced essentially.

Don't worry, all the articles you've reported are clickbait websites, or referring to them.
And they have rumors based on nothing.

We can still believe in an appropriate Q1 2016 Skylake release.

90% of the pages in this thread is about why Apple hasn't released an updated MBP yet when Brand X has already.
