I doubt we're seeing a redesign this year. Although I agree it's probably about time. I'd think next year would be it. Depends on what their next objective is with a redesign (TB3, new 'lightning with audio' coming to iPhone next year, removal of HDMI, USB-C, etc.). Keep in mind, it's not just about a "fresh new look", it's also about ports and stuff. Apple is very systematic, they just don't say "oh hey - it's about time to change the design, let's shuffle a couple ports around and change the look".

Can anyone shed some light on what Skylake allows manufactures' to do when compared to Broadwell? Thinner, smaller, anything that would allow for more room in chassis, etc?
Didn't TB3 already out?

Intel leaked the roadmap a week or two ago, you can search it on google.

Here is the roadmap: http://ic.tweakimg.net/ext/i/2000852321.jpeg

In deed, if I understand it right, the Skylake-U 28W should be ready from production between week 45 and 48 of 2015 (end december)
Your source doesn't say that Apple will start using these CPUs; only that Intel has them available. Apple may have other plans for the MBP line.

Seeing as the Skylake Y and U series have already been released, wouldn't it be reasonable to suggest that the Macbook Air and rMB will be first in line to get an update (possibly in March) followed by the rMBP 13"/15" some months later (June)?

It looks like Apples entire lineup (desktop/notebook) needs to be updated and, for obvious reasons, I doubt that Apple would release new updates for each one at once.

...If the redesign it's not happening until 5k thunderbol display support it's here, then it won't be a redesign until 2017 Caby Lake, which will lead to a 2016 Skylake version of the same actual body, maybe even without USB-C like they did with the iMac. I hope not, because that would be a pain in the ass.
2016 hardware which needs no additional adapters (i.e. non-USB-C) is “a pain in the ass”?

True, but since this is Waiting for Skylake CPU, we suppose they're going to use the equivalent 28W TDP of the actual generation but with Skylake. What other alternatives do you think they could use? Skylake-H Quad Cores on the 13 inch would be just an amazing thing to see.

Since I'm not rich, I expect my buy to last at least 5-6 years. USB-C (TB3) will allow to use 4k monitors, eGPU and it's the future, like it or not. On the other hand nobody said that a rMBP with USB-C / TB3 can't have standard USB 3.1 too.

So basically, for me yes.

The article stems from a chronicle over at Patently Apple, so it's not even a rumor. Well, Yibada made it into a rumor.

Now, this may indeed be the future in a couple of years but for now MBP work horses are going to need Iris Pro chips.
Switching from an architecture to another it's not an easy job, and why to switch anyway, just because GeekBench shows A9X did it "better"? What about the massive x86 based apps, and the compatibility of Windows?

i wonder if apple will make OSX for AMR and the others developers like blizzard games or prof apps from osx will make them compatible with this cpu ?!
If they think about taking this to mac, they need to talk with almost all companies with at lest 2-3 years ahead of the launch

seems that Apple will wait until mid 2016 for kaby lake for the MBP and for the macbook will update to skylake in march

intel just announce the road and kaby lake will be released in June 2016...where do you here 2017?
I hear June FROM INTEL ITSELF. If it will be delayed is their problems but i don't think so, since there we are only 7 months away

June for Kaby Lake-U (dual-core rMBP13)
Not Kaby Lake-H

yes, here is about MBP in general so both 13 and 15"
so 13" macbook pro can be the first updated in June
so kaby lake

but will Apple make a redesign and an update to the younger brother ? or wait until in Oct-november? that is the question

If I remember it right, both Iris Pro version of Kaby Lake-U and Kaby Lake-H are due to January 2017. June 2016 it's the standard iGPU Kaby Lake release so it won't be on Macs.

5k and native TB3 support would be great to have but I don't know if I can wait so long =(

Kaby Lake is a topic that has been rehashed ad nauseum in virtually every single page for the last few pages of this thread, but to reiterate:

Yes, Kaby Lake is slated for Q3 2016, but Kaby Lake GT3 and GT4e iGPUs are not slated until 2017. The 13" MBP gets GT3 (so SesameWasher is incorrect about it being possible in June 2016), and the the 15" gets GT4e, so neither one can get Kaby Lake before 2017.

Unless Intel changes the iGPU nomenclature from Skylake, Kaby Lake U class would get Iris, not Iris Pro. Iris Pro would only be in the HQ chips.

And Kaby Lake HQ chips with GT4e are not even on any leaked roadmaps yet, so to cite a January 2017 release date for them is also incorrect.

You are double right sir, don't know why I allways forget to differenciate Iris from Iris Pro. I think I mixed Kaby Lake-S with H. Sorry.

I think that Apple won't skip Skylake ! They already skip broadwell for the 15" . I hope they will also refresh the design with smaller bezels, a bit thinner and Usb-C ports instead of Usb A.

June? I thought Quad core will be in September.
