Desktop models like imac or mac pro uses desktop cpu. Mac mini and macbook pro can share, like n the past same class cpu
[doublepost=1486508551][/doublepost]And 2 do you really think apple will update the macbook pro after just 4-5 months?!

I own the 2016 Skylake MBP, and have gaming rigs with the 6820HK and a shiny new Kaby Lake 7820HK (overclockable Kabylake). Honestly except for gaming, I don't notice that many differences between the Skylake and the Kaby processor 6/7820HK series. Geekbench shows a decent but ultimately modest improvement in single and multicore perf. I'd expect that to play out for the 6700HQ in the current notebooks compared to 7700HQ. I'm talking day to day stuff.

Ergo I think Apple may wait around a little while to flesh out other technologies (I.e. new battery tech, wireless charging or new GPU) before moving to the 7700HQ. Doesn't seem to be a compelling reason otherwise.

However don't disregard me as a salty Skylake user :p, infact I know the 2017 MBP will be the best there ever was for each of you :). I always knew there was a slight chance for a much faster refresh interval because we're no longer tied to Iris Pro graphics.

FFS there's no indication for any desktop model: not iMac not pros nor minis.
Please read the article.
And 2: yes, apple already did in the past, 6 months upgrade cycles are nothing new for the MacBook Pro line (if you don't believe my words check the MacBook Pro unibody Wikipedia page)
Am I saying that there will be 100% a new update in march/April? No
Am I saying that at the moment apple is testing MacBook Pros with a new architecture? Probably yes
There's the possibility that in spring with a new line of iMacs, minis and whatever they are going to update (speed bump) also the MacBook pros? Probably yes
[doublepost=1486547505][/doublepost]
Do you believe the 2017 model will be a worthy and significant update?
Who knows? If they are going to present them in late 2017 probably no since the next architecture will have a lot more features (if I remember correctly one above others will be an integrated support for tb3, and also better power management)
Kaby lake is more or less just a speed bump (CPU wise) but it will have better performance GPU wise (the integrated one) but everything is related to the timings and the cpus they're going to pick.
Btw, they could eventually fit that rumored new battery technology in other than hw upgrades.
As I said before let's wait and hope.

He was saying that the Mac mini uses a laptop CPU. The same as the 28W model used in the 13" MBP. The perf-bias was on the iMac which uses a desktop CPU.
Please read his comment.
(But it is still very unlikely that it's a reference to the mini since the other two references are clearly for the MBP)

I know that the minis are almost always built with a mobile CPU, but in the original source (the post mentioned above) the author (PIKERALPHA) has already excluded the possibility that the references are for mac Minis, period.

I'm not saying that it will be like that for sure, i'm saying that BY READING THE POST by pikeralpha at the moment the only references are for macbook pros, not mac minis or whatever.

Well, I think Kaby Lake MacBook Pros could be here very soon. The fact that they dropped the "late" from the 2016 MacBook Pro model name (Link) sounds very suspicious to me.

skylake and kabylake are more or less the same, they don't need to do a lot of reengineering to fit them in the new pros.
higher clock speed, native support to modern encoding format, slightly better integrated GPUS that would translate ( in theory) in overall better performance per watt, that would be awesome site the little batteries in the 2016.
maybe they will reintroduce a 15" without dgpu, but the lack of cpus with iris pro integrated gpu would translate in subpar performance (gpu-wise) with the oder 15 retina (non touchbar).

imho in march/april (even if june would be more suitable) all the mac line will receive an update to kabylake and we are going to have the "mid 2017" series and later on a "late 2017" (or early 2018) with cannon for the macbook and coffe for the pros.

can a man dream?

I gotta say the new XPS 15s are somewhat tempting. 2.8GHz Kaby Lake, 4GB graphics, 512GB SSD, for about $1000 less than what I'd be paying for a new MBP with 2.6GHz Skylake, 4GB graphics, 512GB SSD. Unfortunately, I know I wouldn't be happy with the XPS since I don't like Windows and the build quality and overall package doesn't come close to the MBPs. I wish I didn't care how a product made me feel so I could just be happy with an XPS lol.

xxray, I feel you man. My MBP just died a few days ago and I attempted to buy a new Windows PC because I did't really like the new 15" MBP with touch bar. The XPS 15" (in my opinion) would be a better overall option, compared to other top-notch PCs out there, including the Razer Blade. I went to tried out the XPS 15" a few times to get used to it. However, I could't push myself to buying it because the user experience is nothing compared to the MBP. I went back to the Apple store and tried the new MBP again and I appreciated it more. I don't really care if I need to get more dongles or if it is over priced anymore. I just know that I am so much more pleased whenever I use the MBP.

(Please forgive me if I offend any Razer Blade, XPS, or Windows PCs' fans out there, this is just my Mac-user and amateur-PC-user point of view)

According to solid rumors, which is the coming up Kaby Lake processor (not including bigger batteries, etc). The Kaby Lake will be an upgrade of:
1. Energy efficiency = better battery life.
2. A little clock speed improvement = a little snappier.
3. Native hardware decoding for h.265, VP9, HEVC, Main10 profile 10bit, 4K video ready for Kaby Lake and beyond. If you take a look at current Sky Lake or older processors (Haswell, Broadwell), you will see it takes up around 5-10% iGPU power while watching an HD 1080p video. Which is mostly in h.264, VP8, Main profile 8bit video codex format. While if you attempt to watch 4K on youtube or watch any 4K which will be using h.265, VP9, HEVC , Main10, 10 bit, you will see it takes up to 50-70% of iGPU power because there is no hardware decoder inside. So if you want to watch 4K videos casually in the future, either on the MacBook screen (which is at a higher resolution than 1080p), or plugin it into a TV or 4K monitors, it will be beneficial to wait for Kaby Lake because you will have the same battery life as watching a standard 1080p video today.
4. HDCP 2.2 hardware included. Some complicated DRM stuff.

In other words, more future proof than SkyLake.

Other than that, think for yourself if you think its worth waiting for Kaby Lake.

This is great information, Penlocky! Thank you for sharing! It'd be well worth the wait if you currently have a computer to work on, but my MBP just died a few days ago and I need a new one as soon as I can. Looking at the current trend with Apple, I'm afraid that this change won't happen until 2018. I really hope that I am wrong about this and that Apple will surprise us with this upgrade in April or June. That would be awesome!

Penlocky, I haven't bought it yet coz Im still deciding between the 13" and the 15". I will buy one next month or in April for sure.

Changing my vote as I obviously haven't bought yet, got a machine through work and haven't needed to use my personal machine as much, although the KGI rumors of a more high end 32GB option appeal to me and I'm likely to spring for one of those on release.

15" please. Don't get a 13" and be regretted like me.
15" screen size is amazing and I can't go back to 13".
But depends on what you want. Portability? Or a little bigger for dat screen and dat powerrrr. Battery is also better on the 15".

I had a MBP 17" so 15" won't be a problem for me in terms of portability, especially this new version is pretty thin and light. However, the 15" that I want is like $3k and I don't have the money for it yet. The 13" is what I need right now, but the 15" is what I want lol. Such a dilemma right lol! I mean it's $600 different between the two models (in my case), which is not that bad, but I can't afford the 15" right now. I guess I'm gonna wait until I have the fund because I much rather have the 15" and not be regretted later. Thank you for your advice! :)

That's my situation now, I have a great 13" laptop and based on a number of metrics its a great computer and I don't really regret getting it, but from an extended usage perspective the smaller display has been giving me more eyestrain and issues. I think I'll be getting a 15" laptop in the near future, but as always one size doesn't fit all and YMMV

On notebookcheck review of nex xps 15 is updating everyday. As I predicted (and many here were saying *********s that we can't compare polaris vs pascal on notebooks because its different scenario bla bla and also many says that new iris will be as fast ;d) gtx 1050 4gb destroys radeon 460 (1.43x in Witcher 3, 1.51x in Titanfall 2). On average dell consume 7 wats more (9%) than new macbook 15.

Not a comparable configuration for power consumption comparison if it's the review I've seen. Will be interesting to see the results with comparable specs and features, like the 4K display. It appears even the lower-spec'd model is loud under load, but with a nice flat profile to the sound.

One should expect the machine to crush the MBP in gaming benchmarks, as always. Differences will be smaller in the areas the Macs are designed to do well in.

I watched the review and did not come away thinking it was ridiculously biased (and I own a 15MBPtb).

You're not supposed to think so, but it is. It minimizes every MBP advantage that it bothers to mention, exaggerates MBP faults and XPS virtues, and it makes stuff up to add to the effect, such as that the XPS has a wider color space than the MBP. Check out his other videos, mostly pedaling Dell. One is on the Dell site. Yes, very highly biased.

Yeah 15" is da beast. How many computers do you personally own at a time?

Well, he doesn't decide what I think, I do. He clearly likes the Dell best and states the reasons why. You may not agree with his opinions or the things he likes better, which is fine as you are free to buy whatever works best for you. I made my own decision and bought the MBPtb, but that doesn't mean a lot of the things he brings up aren't valid.

I am annoyed by Apple lately. Returned LG Ultrafine 5K, returned MBP15 2016. And I speak up about it.

But that guy is more biased then an average 12 year old fanboy (no matter the brand). Just read the comments below the video. One of those comments says 'MacOS is limited'. And there are more just like that one.

Next, this guy says MBP build quality probably won't last as good as Dells, but gives no reasoning to why he thinks that. He didn't even mention coil whine, even though it's still there. And when comparing screens, he fails to say that Windows to this day fails in scaling, and 3rd party support for scaling under Windows is a joke.

And then he just mentions 16:9 vs 16:10... Well, I really appreciate 16:10 ratio on a laptop. Makes a great difference. Then when mentioning tb3 support, he fails to mention that xps has just 20gb/s ?

I use MacOS and Windows. I prefer macOS way more then Windows. But I do love some stuff more on Windows than on MacOS. Of course. As I do love some stuff on XPS. I would love to see almost no bezel on MBP, that really looks great. I would love all the ports as well. Nvidia GPU? Bring it on...

But that comparison is like giving a complete apple fanboy to do a comparison between iPhone and Galaxy S phone. Would you consider it to be relevant? I know I wouldn't... :)
