Had my 15" TB MBP stolen last week  in LA...so guess I'm getting a 2018 model now :-\

Oh random question...anyone know if I can transfer the applecare I bought for my MBP to the new one since it was stolen? I bought the 2017 MBP in September.

Unfortunately you won’t be transferring your Apple Care. It’s going to be replaced along with the computer. On a good note the 2018 are going to give you substantially more bang for your buck in terms of performance. The keyboard issues should also be delt with I’d assume.

I'm sorry guys... but why do you come here and ask questions like

"Is there a chance X or Y is fixed in 2018?" There's ALWAYS a chance, but no one (outside Apple) really knows.

Same for "Are they gonna be released in March/before WWDC/any date?"

They will most likely release a new MBP this year (99.9% confidence) when... no one knows! Could be March. Could be WWDC. Could be September or October. If I had to guesstimate and it is nothing but that: chances would be 30% March, 60% WWDC, 10% Fall. Gut feeling. No more no less.

What are the odds they fix the keyboard?

Given that this is a desktop part, does anyone have thoughts on what might actually be a feasible geekbench score if in fact the laptops go to 6 core / 12 threads?

Probably something similar. But why would you care? Geekbench is mostly pointless.

Just returned my 2017 MacBook Pro. After a week of using it the light guide in the display came loose and was rattling around. Apparently this is a common issue, my girlfriends has the same problem. I returned it because for 2300 dollars I expect a laptop that doesn’t make rattling noises when I move it around.

They've been rattling since at least the 2012 models... All retina MBPs rattle. To be honest, I never really understood this "$2300 laptop shouldn't rattle" stance. Did you buy the laptop to shake it around? Its not even something you notice unless you do shake it around. The MBPs rattle, some other laptops have coil while, some others flex and crack when you pick them up. Every device has its own design idiosyncrasies. The MBP also makes this distinct "popping" sound when the display assembly is heated up.

Any chance this issue will be fixed with the 2018 version?

I think no. Apple said, it's not a design flaw, it's a safety function because if you drop it, there is a tiny space between the metal frame and the lcd assembly which can reduce the damage.

This was also an issue throughout the last gen of machines, so I wouldn’t hold your breath :/ Apple just seems to have lost the plot a bit on durability testing and quality control, with the MacBooks at least. I guess a symptom of being an iPhone first, second and third company with the MacBooks only just squeaking into the top 10 priorities...

Depends largely on what you mean by „fixing“ the keyboard.

If you mean by it having it replaced by a completely new keyboard design as the people who dislike the current keyboard seem to do, then no, that‘s almost certainly not going to happen. If you mean addressing the reliability issues, then yes, I‘d expect a silent improvement (probably without being pointed out as such by Apple).

The 2017 models already hat a silent update like that which seemed to reduce keyboard failure rates (it‘s difficult to say for certain without any solid major statistics), and they released just 8 months after the 2016 ones. With 12 months inbetween the 2017 and 2018 model (if we assume that we‘ll get a WWDC release), Apple would have had plenty of time to largely address any remaining issues.

Do we actually know the failure rates of the keyboards of the 2017 MBP? For what we know, the keyboard already might be fixed in this model.

Noise on here suggests the 2017 model fixed a number of the immediate problems people were seeing but there are still some potential longer term durability issues. I say potential, because I agree posts in a Mac focused forum is not an ideal measure.

I suspect Apple will continue to refine the design regardless as that’s pretty much what they’ve also done in the 3-4 years following each major redesign.

Thanks. It's synthetic but still helpful to get a rough idea. Performance improvements have been pretty anemic the last few years, and I'm clinging to hope that there'll be some substance to the next update.

For my work, (3d/premiere/AE/unity/unreal) I'd honestly probably be better off with a windows desktop, but I've become so attached to the ergonomics of Apple laptops, I'm giving it one more refresh to see if I can make it work.

The early rMBPs in 2012 were creaky on the palm rest. I still remember this.

Single-thread performance will likely be unchanged since Coffee Lake is just Kaby Lake with more cores, multi-core will definitely be better, but by how much, depends on your application. I think that the differences you see in the desktop space will be representative for mobile as well.

For my work, (3d/premiere/AE/unity/unreal) I'd honestly probably be better off with a windows desktop, but I've become so attached to the ergonomics of Apple laptops, I'm giving it one more refresh to see if I can make it work.

Why not an iMac? I"m sure they will get a Coffee Lake bump soonish.

I agree with this logic. Since I cannot get metrics based on my exact usage using my data etc, geekbench gives me a rough idea of differences between machines.

Having the same dilemma. I'm leaning towards a beefed up Dell desktop. iMac Pros are too crazy expensive

How was it stolen, did you leave it unattended somewhere or did you get held up?

Check out Corsair One Pro. Excellent little machine. Quite, powerful and with excellent service.

Not really cheaper than the iMac pro though, all things considered :) Very nice GPU though.

P.S. Oops, missed a 1 in the price difference. I though it was 1,5k difference, not 2.5k.
