I'm in the market for a 13 MBP. I'd love a great video card and 4 cores; however whats most important for me is HDMI 2.0a or 2.1! Feeding my tv 4k HDR @60fps is very important and anything less coming out of the MBP would be a wasteful investment.

Not necessarily. The performance of quad-core chips on single/dual thread apps is actually often comparable to the dual-core chips, due to very good Turbo Boost. For example, the 1.9 GHz quad-core i7 8th gen is actually slightly faster than the 2.5 GHz dual-core i7 7th gen in Cinebench single-core.

https://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-intel_core_i7_8650u-769-vs-intel_core_i7_7660u-681

Unlike the old days, there is much less of a downside to quad-core than there used to be.
Few real life applications would mimic the single core only usage of the Cinebench benchmark, but point taken.

Also since we’re talking mobile, cooling is a big factor wrt the ability to maintain Turbo Boost clock speeds.

With the sophisticated power management techniques current CPUs use, it's hard to predict actual performance simply based on Intel’s base or Turbo speeds. It’s very much workload dependent, including what demands are being placed on the iGPU.

But I get your point.

Where should one look to find decent, real world use benchmarks to compare MacBooks?

All the Kaby Lake models from 2017 support HDCP 2.2 already.

And all the recent Macs also support HDMI 2.0 for 4K at 60 Hz if you have the right USB-C to HDMI adapter. HDMI 2.0a I believe can technically be supported but good luck on finding one that does it well. So:

4K SDR at 30 Hz - Lots of support, including with Apple's adapter which is HDMI 1.4b.
4K SDR at 60 Hz - This can be supported but you need to use specific (non-Apple) adapters that support HDMI 2.0.
4K HDR at 60 Hz - I believe can be supported, but most adapters don't. There are adapters out there that advertise HDMI 2.0a support, but my understanding is they are hit and miss.

I'm not sure what's available in terms of Thunderbolt, but of course that leaves out all TVs.

Yes the CPU is 2.2 compliant but the bottle neck is the output hardware. The current machines are not 2.0a. Therefore can't output 4k HDR 60fps. Hence why I'm waiting for 2.0a/b or 2.1.. Ideally 2.1 for the ability to use dynamic metadata.

? I was under the impression that the hardware technically can support it, but you need the appropriate external adapter and of course full OS and software support with the appropriate video driver.

Right now the Apple adapter regardless of the Mac generation only supports HDMI 1.4, but you can get third party adapters that will do HDMI 2.0 and more recently, there are rare ones that will do HDMI 2.0a.

Have you tested with the appropriate adapter and the latest OS versions? Have you tested with Windows under Boot Camp with the latest Intel driver? I'm curious, because I had thought it would work at least in Windows 10 with Intel GT2.

Hi guys,

Is there any chance that the new MBP will be available this month?
My MBP was damaged yesterday and i have to buy something new this month. What do you think, is it make sense to wait 2-3 weeks or just buy 2017 model now?
I am starting new project at 29th March and I need to have laptop this day.

My guess is no but you never know. Note though Apple takes returns.

A very slim chance now, I would say, but it is highly likely to be June at the latest. If you have to have the computer by the end of the month, the sensible thing is to buy one now.

Nobody knows. There are sketchy rumours of Apple launching a new product this month, but no clear what if anything. Other manufacturers rumoured to be launching hex core laptops in March/April also.

But you have other options. Can you repair the damage? Failing that by a Refurb or a 2015 model ?

Hi, thanks for your point of view in this matter.
I will wait one more week end then decide. If they will not release 4 Core MBP 13", I will go buy current one.

I have MBP Retina 15" 2013 Early and graphic stopped working. The price of fix that is to expensive. MBP was under official Apple GPU service action but i had a screen changed in unathorized service, so apple rejected my request for fix the issue with GPU.

Who's with me?

Hopefully we'll see:
- Coffee Lake
- 32 GB of DDR4 RAM
- Battery improvements
- Touch Bar improvements
I believe those omissions are all due to technical restrictions/challenges and not a choice. I'm pretty sure 32 GB of RAM will be coming next year.
It looks like the OP is going to be disappointed. My understanding is that 2018 will not bring 32 GB LPDDR4.

If you absolutely need it by March 29, I'd order it in the next few days, esp. if it's a config-to-order. March 29 is less than 3 weeks from today.

Your return policy if you order from Apple should protect you until that date.

Yeah I know this by now. June and no 32 GB. Whatever, I’ll still buy one!

I really hope June is the month! I need a MacBook pro for school, which starts mid July. Fingers crossed.

Wish we would get some rumors of a potential release date!

Safe to assume that we won't see a form factor change and 32 GB till next year?

32GB next year is reasonably likely, but it's yet to be confirmed that Intel will support LPDDR4 in Ice Lake (the processors likely to appear in next year's refreshes). I don't think there will be a form factor update until around 2020.

Well, FWIW, the leaks that have appeared so far have confirmed LPDDR4 in Ice Lake Y. The pic below doesn't confirm it for Ice Lake U, but presumably if Ice Lake Y is getting it then Ice Lake U will get it too.

However, even though Ice Lake Y will get it, I'm guessing Apple won't offer a 32 GB 12" MacBook next year.

Interesting, thanks for that. Agree it makes it very likely that LPDDR4 and 32GB will come to MBP next year.

Agreed, that's pretty unlikely in the lower-end MacBook. Perhaps after MBP has had it for a couple of years.

Well, at least it looks like Apple is putting some thought into keyboard reliability.

https://www.theverge.com/2018/3/9/17100594/apple-patent-dirt-debris-liquid-snacks

Anyone know anything about US patents? - why would this come out now?
  • is there a certain amount of time before patents become public knowledge?
  • has it always been public since 2016 and someone just happened to discover it now?
  • was it applied for in 2016 but only granted now?
  • is it one of those controlled leaks to let people know there will be kb changes coming?

EDIT: some googling around implies that it just takes a while for patents to be published.
