I think that's a typo, but the part I bolded means you think the MacBook Pro is accurate.

Anyhow, no it's not going to be pro accurate, but FWIW, it's more accurate than most Windows PCs out there. A lot of Windows PCs aren't even in the right ballpark.

Sorry, yes my bad. The screen is good, but not so accurate that going to oled is impossible because it will make it less accurate. I'm pretty sure there's no way to go but up. There are pc laptops that have weaker screens but there are also ones that are better too, especially at this price range.

It's not that the screens on Windows PCs are better or worse, it's that some PC makers don't put much effort into calibrating them at the factory. So what happens is that even if it is a good screen, the colour calibration is completely off.

That's pretty Meh !!

Late 2019/2020 for a more interesting update imo - it doesn't help that they have a strong dependancy on Intel/GPU manufacturers.

I think Apple got a few other products/projects they are prioritising on right now and redesigning the MacBook (if I was Apple) wouldn't make sense to me.

Heh. I knew that several releases have been in June, but didn't realize it was the second most common month. Many of those were at WWDC of course, which directly contradicts all the people that always say every year that WWDC is only for software developers and not for hardware releases.
Yeah, I mean I don't personally mind if they use the opportunity to present hardware and OS releases. But if it's supposed to be a developer's conference and nothing else, then I'd be very concerned for Apple. Out of the 2+ hours of presentation, there was very little that actually related to software development. They showed ARKit I suppose, and mentioned ML and Metal in passing, and admittedly a couple other minor things. But the majority of the presentation had no relevant connection to software development at all. Personally, the only thing from the presentation that influences me as a developer is that they're dropping OpenGL and OpenCL support. Which isn't exactly great.

I just don't understand why Memojis and wristbands would be natural topics in a developer's presentation, and MacBooks would not.

If they were so inclined, they could certainly make a small redesign without changing the concept too much. Smaller bezels, higher refresh rate and maybe 4K display. Repair the keyboard and remove the click. Better spec web cam. Jet black colour option and matte display. Find a way to add your own choice of HDMI, SD card or USB-A port. Unglue the battery. Pen drawable trackpad. Make the SSD user replaceable. DDR4 RAM option. And of course bump the CPU and GPU. And I'm sure there are other minor tweaks they could make that would go a long way.

It's of course completely unrealistic for this to happen, but not really for technical reasons.

Well, I have been a mac user since 2008/09, something like that. Mac OS isn't what it used to be, but for me and my needs, it's still the best OS out there. And that is the only reason I want a MBP.

But I need to update now. And I'm 90% getting a Razer Blade 15. Maybe something else, but MBP is out of the question. I'm not paying 1000€ premium for a laptop that has last year specs, especially when I can get more cores for way less €.

I'm going now completely on Windows, except my Macbook 12. But that little computer is used just for surfing, movies, etc. And I will keep it, since I really enjoy it. And it will be my only Mac OS computer from now on.

I will see what Apple does when they redesign MBP in 2020/21, but even then I'm not sure anymore that I want to invest in Apple computers. They have proven year after year that they simply don't care about macs anymore. I already ditched iPhone, and have no plans in purchasing any iPhone in the future.

I just never thought I will go back to Windows completely. But who knows, maybe, just maybe I will purchase a MBP in October. But highly doubtful. I have lost all my faith in Apple and their macs. They always used lousy GPUs when compared to competition, but I always got good quality, and a stable OS. High end GPU is not something I really need, so I never took that as a major minus to macs.

But now even quality of once great MBPs is lost. Keyboard issues that plague the 'Pro' lineup, silly design decisions, and especially touch bar... Well, I really can't see myself paying premium anymore. I'm just hoping that Tim Cook goes into politics or something, that seems to concern him way more then Apple.

Totally agree. The first thing I noticed was a spec bump DOWN in MacBooks from like 1.8Ghz to 1.1Ghz. That told me something was off. Then the butterfly keyboards failing and learning how everything is glued together and to replace a key they need to remove the whole top half of the computer, battery included. These design flaws go WAY back though, with Apple. I remember a design flaw in one of the first few Macs during Steve Jobs’ first few years at Apple. You’d think they’d have learned after ALL these years to make true their unofficial motto “it just works”. I can see the justification for iPhones and iPads to make them locked down so they’re more likely to work for longer. But doing the same on a proper computer preventing RAM upgrades etc is just lame.

Ives has acknowledged that the current version of the mb/p and maybe even the mb is a design failure. The question is, will he repeat the same mistakes in 2019 with the redesign?
Because there seems to be no one within the infinite loop willing to question or criticize him or in any way shape or form rein him in.

The mb, mbp and desktops are clearly low priority vis a vis the iphone/ios juggernaut. Apple is making money hand over fist charging a sky high premium and most apple users are willing to pay it with little if any protest.

My message to those interested: don't wait on apple to prioritize functionality and practicality. They are allowing Ives' to obsess about thinness and lightness while Tim Cook focuses on social justice warrior propaganda campaigns like rainbow watchbands and pride logos.

Agree with your last paragraph but I think Tim Cook is a great CEO but perhaps could do with saying no more often plus more executive decisions like “we should do this and not that” eg. overruling Ives on impractical keyboards for thinness’ sake.

Btw do you have a link or reference to Ives design failure comment?

That's preposterous to say Ive's comment on rMBP design is a failure. I have not read it anywhere that is absolute rubbish !

I don't remember him saying it's a failure, i think at worse the keyboard issues weren't taken into consideration but they will likely fix that and are probably doing so as we speak but silently for the updates later this year (likely in October).

Now that we've still got a few months left is anyone else deathly afraid something is going to happen to their current laptop?

I'm like afraid to even use mine now even though it's fine. Some function keys have been...getting stuck in odd positions though....
I know one thing: I will not be here reading Page 1000 of the "Waiting for MBP" thread when it comes around. I'm tired of this. I ordered a 2015 15" last December, then sent it back because of "what if?-itis". I could have been using it all all this time. I am going to now take the advice of others that I have read here previously: Buy what you need, if you need it, and don't look back. Don't know if I will order a 2017 or 2015, but the time is now.

This is a joke... can’t decide to just buy one now or hold out couple months :-(

Then I think I should just buy a base model then sell it if they bring one out,

Come on leak something so we have some hope

Best Buy has their base 13" Pros on sale for $300 off right now. 128GB for $999. Not too shabby.

Hmm I am currently thinking the same. If the MBPs were to be delayed till the end of the year or next year, I would buy one right now.

But if we are to see upgraded ones as soon as August/September or maybe October, then I would prefer to try and hold out as I am not looking to upgrade for at least the next 3 years.

A small leak either which way would be really helpful about now.

So by extension, the user is used as a heat sink? Is heat dissipation a service I can charge Apple for? Could they move this to iCloud?

;-)
As extension the user is antenna so now with the latest Mojave release there is no need to have Airport to transfer heat to iCloud ;) You can store up to 5GigaWatts for free and heat can be shared with your aunt in Anchorage within few seconds. It is amazing feature!

I know that feeling, man. I had been waiting for wwdc but end of year might be too much to wait. Specially bc when/if they announce a refresh it may well take some months for then to be found in retail stores. Besides... i am getting married in July and if I don’t buy it now, that extra money might well become furniture to the new home in a blink of an eye.

Awww it's become a Farce and for me it's easy to see why. Apple lost it's clear direction.

Macbook used to be entry Level for consumers.
Pro used to be just that. For Pros. Function over Thinness.
And if you wanted SMALL at all Costs, you'd go AIR.

Now everything's going to be thinner and the Price gap between Macbook and Macbook Pro is so narrow, they NEED to cripple the Macbook with Performance so the Pro Looks and feels faster in comparison.

Here's what I'd do:
Macbook gets 1 USB-C, 1 legacy USB A, headphone jack and if you so wish the TOUCHBAR. because it's for college Kids and noobs. Also make it in 10 different Colours. Legacy ones from the Tangerine imacs era.

Make a Macbook Air II, as thin as possible. only 1 port USB-C. Thin thin thin thin and light. Make it translucent and slow like **** but give it 2 weeks battery life. Heck give it an e-ink Display and make that 3 weeks! :D (kidding).

Make a Macbook Pro like the 2015 Inch Version with USB-C added, same thickness for better cooling, better graphics Cards, add space Grey Color. Use Keyboard from the magic Keyboard. Remove and burn touchbar. Keep touch ID AND add face ID on the higher end models. Easy. Done.

*sad*

Just buy a friggin desktop if you need power or some big clunky laptop. The new HP G5 360 looks nice for this.

Apple do not supply what you want. Never have done, never will.
They will always slim it down as the model is a machine for most people that looks great and is portable with reasonable power [the number one reason for a laptop.......].
I have been using them for 20 years now, and as far as I can tell, have never been what you want. Look at the titanium powerbook compared to the competition then, for example. This was a long time ago now [2002 / 3?] and the exact same business model applied then to now, except now Apple are a consumer, not a computer company.

They will always go thinner and more portable, whilst delivering reasonable power for most peoples use.
A pro like myself cannot survive on a laptop like these without a struggle / not use the current apps to their potential.
Personally I like to work without frustration, so invest in the right tools for the job.

If a MBP is not fast enough for you, dont get frustrated, change the way you work as Apple are not going to change their business for you. They have a very clear direction, it is you who cannot see it.

We are all here, because we love/loved apple's products, right?

I cannot imagine anyone complaining because apple did not made it even more thinner.
On the other side, the last years, so many users, we do believe that apple do sacrifice many good aspects of macbook pro, just to make it thinner.

They have a direction, for sure, but I believe that they lose their focus on portables. The clear discrimination across the portable lines are almost gone.

They may not change their business model, but possibly, ignoring so many customers, seems like arrogance. And this is not good.

I can't imagine anyone complaining about it needing to be thinner either - I guess I wouldn't complain if it WAS thinner as long as it retained the same performance and battery life. I tested a 2017 in the store and it seemed ridiculously thin even in comparison to my girlfriend's 2014 model - which IMO is still very thin and easy to work with. The 2017 version seems like razer thin, so I can't imagine how much thinner it could even get. Does anyone know if there are laptops available now that are thinner than the 2017 MBP? Just curious.

Touchbar for college kids and noobs? Wut?

College kids are the reason we went to moon and have iPhones! People that actually do science ;)

It's not that powerful notebooks don't exist it, more to the point Apple doesn't produce one, nor do they need to be 10lb behemoth's. If one requires a performant notebook there is currently only one direction, away from Apple.

Apple is now very much a consumer company and mostly always has been. Apple's commitment to it's professional audience these days is little more than lip service to appease the baying tech press and predominantly why it's notebooks serve the consumer all sharing the same theme at varying price points. The MBP can clearly be utilised by many, with a professional being judged by their actions, not their hardware.

The other primary factor is there's simply too few of us with genuine need, and for all the talk fewer likely to purchase a MBP with $3.5K - $5K price range...

I'm considering getting the low end 15" Touch Bar MacBook Pro with with an upgraded 500gb SSD, but I don't wanna rush it and have new 2018 MacBooks come out with coffee lake processors.

That's pretty Meh !!

This is exactly why you should wait until their next major revamp, which would be late next year, or early 2020. They're most definitely not going to revise the keyboard before then, perhaps only minor fixes. No way in hell will they change the entire thing before then, that's just admitting it's a failure, which Apple does not do.

I'm planning on keeping my 2015 MBP until 2019, and my AppleCare lasts until then too, so I'm pretty satisfied with that. But I can understand the dilemma for people wanting to upgrade from previous models which they've had for ages.

Uh, yes they do. Bend gate was resolved in 1 generation, antennae gate was resolved in 1 generation , so they’re clearly capable of resolving outstanding issues in the next iteration.
