I think a lot of us are going to be 'waiting for the 2019 MBP' mainly because we want a silicon fixed for the Meltdown and Spectre vulnerabilities.

Oh, well, and for the 10nm technology as well.

Honestly at this point I could not give a rats ass about a hard silicon fix - I simply want more speed! If I buy a new machine today I'm no worse off in this vulnerability than everyone for the last 15 years (except for the fact the vulnerabilities are now exposed.....but that effects everyone currently and has been software patched)

But the software patch affects the chips speed to some degree (between 5 and 30 percent is what was bandied about)

With 2 extra cores and 40% speed bump overall I don't care :D

I mean...relatively at least. Of course it would be great if they were fixed in silicon, but if that means waiting another year to get them - no ..just give me the flawed ones already.

agree, people used their devices for 10 years WITH NO PROBLEMS until they heard about it..and now their minds are playing..

I am leaning towards a March release. I think Apple will surprise people this time.

What's your reasoning for March? Not trying to contradict you, I'm genuinely curious what evidence there is for it because I'd be happy about an update in March.

Many people seem to believe more in a June update like last year because we've only leared about the Coffeelake mobile lineup so recently. Would this short timeframe be enough for Apple to decide which ones to use, do the necessary R&D that comes with putting them into the MBP internals, and sending the updated MBPs into mass-production with them? (Although then again Apple might have known about Intel's new lineup for weeks/months before public release so who knows.)

Also on a related note, there are multiple recent rumors about an AirPower + compatible AirPods case towards the end of March. Now they don't necessarily have anything to do with new MBPs but since Apple historically likes to announce new hardware in chunks whenever that is possible, that would make a concurrent MBP update very likely if MBPs are to be updated in the March/April timeframe, would it? Conversely, if Apple doesn't announce new MBPs alongside those then I wouldn't get my hopes up for a MBP update till June since it just seems like the most convenient pre-WWDC release window.

Hardware takes a lot of time to design and build. OEMs like Apple always know what suppliers (like Intel etc) are doing significantly earlier than when we in the public find out about it. The time when stuff is officially "announced" is only really for PR/documentation/investor reasons.

I guarantee you Apple, Microsoft, HP, Lenovo and several other higher tier OEMs already have knowledge of Intel's roadmap for the next several years, with details we won't find out for long time and some behind the scenes stuff we will never know about.

Yup I have no doubt you're right about that. My question kindof remains though: given Intel's release and rollout plans for the current Coffeelake chips, is it still plausible that we'll see those chips make their way into the MBPs in time for a March release? Given that we, the public, now get to know Intel's mobile Coffelake details, can we assume that Apple has gotten to know (and gotten shipments) early enough for a March release?

I'd love a release in March but I'm not sure how likely it is to happen; weren't there usually a few months between the public chip announcement, and these chips finding their ways into the MBPs? Having the chip announcements in January/early February and the MBP release in March seems like a tight time window to me in comparison, but I'm not too savvy on these release schedules either so maybe someone who's more knowledgeable can make a better judgement on this situation?

I'll weigh in on this to say that it is certainly POSSIBLE. The reason I say it's possible is because it's happened before, more than once. Intel has announced new processors with OEMs lined up and ready to immediately start shipping products including those processors. In fact, Apple was the exclusive launch partner on a couple of chips a few years ago (i.e. Intel announced and Apple immediately shipped them, and other OEMs started shipping 1-3 months later.)

That said, just because something is possible does not necessarily mean it will happen. There have been hints that Intel will announce their high-performance mobile CPUs in the March/April timeframe, and right on schedule the first high-performance mobile CPU benchmarks have recently been leaked (which usually indicates that OEMs are testing products with the new CPUs in them).

But, even if Intel announces in March/April does not necessarily mean that OEMs will begin to immediately ship products, and even if some OEMs do, there's no guarantee that Apple will be one of the first to do so this time. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

As I recall, at least over 20 years ago, when new chips were announced, computer manufacturers announced new laptop computers.

I'll answer you instead of him:

Since the release of the 8th generation of Intel, about 200 (!) models of laptops with them were released
(55 of them here:
https://www.intel.com/buy/us/en/catalog/laptops/all/8th-generation-intel-core-i7
another 42 of them here:
https://www.intel.com/buy/us/en/catalog/laptops/all/8th-generation-intel-core-i5
the lists are partial!).

With 4 cores, all of them overwhelm the MBP 13 with its 2 cores, while costing less, some of them even less than a half of MBP!
There are also 15" models that replace older models that already used quad core, but now, thanks to the lower power, they have spare power that allows them to move from the economic LPDDR3 (limited to 16GB) to the higher consuming DDR4 (allowing 32GB!), without waiting for LPDDR4. And again, some of them are much cheaper than the MBP 15".

So Apple is beaten in both of the high-end battlefronts:
  1. Cheap quad-core 13" laptops that beat the higher-priced dual-core MBP 13,
  2. and cheap 32GB 15" laptops that beat the higher-priced 16GB MBP 15.

Laptops that are titled by the media as "MBP Killer" are released on a DAILY BASIS!
(for example, an article that was published several hours ago:
https://www.inquisitr.com/opinion/4780648/dell-xps-13-9370-macbook-pro-touchbar-killer/ ).

Apple is BLEEDING in these 2 battlefronts, and it will become much tougher by the time, with more competing models and cheaper prices. Without new models of MBP, it will become a tsunami by March, and a total knockout for Apple by April.

The most urgent task of Apple these days, is to release new MBPs as soon as possible, otherwise it will see a drastic drop of sales in Q2, and maybe even a total-loss of the market. And Apple can't permit itself such thing just after the saga with iPhone X.

Apple is a too clever company to allow itself to commit suicide, so I'm sure new MBPs are around the corner. Apple has played with the 8th generation for a long time, as you can see here:
https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/4177217
https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/4176310
https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/4057824
https://browser.geekbench.com/v4/cpu/4062620

And if we are on March 31 and no new MBPs were released, and you ask me "what now?", my answer will be:
"Sell all of your APPL stocks!"
(and I know that MAC is only a small share of Apple sales).

We're not going to see quad core 13" macs in March. Intel still doesn't have a chip for them yet with an igpu. Maybe WWDC in June.

As far as I know Intel has no plans on releasing a quad core 8th gen with Iris graphics that would work in the 13". They are suppose to release a dual core 8th gen with Iris later this year sometime...

If I was Apple, I would release 2 i7-8650U-based models (one 13" + one 15") on 17Q4 to save the market against the competition (both with weak graphics but with 4 cores, and the 15" model also with DDR4/32GB-RAM instead of LPDDR3, that would become possible thanks to using the economic i7-8650U instead of the higher-powered i7-7920HQ of the older 15").

Then, on 18Q4 or 19Q1, Cannonlake based models, with strong graphics, 4 to 6 cores, and native support for LPDDR4 and 32GB RAM.

Apple can't wait till 18Q4/19Q1 to Cannonlake, and even not to WWDC, and must release something ASAP.

iOS devices. Walk in any new Apple store design. Like 10% space dedicated to computer hardware.

I have a fully loaded 2015 15" Macbook Pro that im looking to hand over to my wife and will upgrade to a 2018 model this year. I dont use it for much but do use it for some video editing from my Mavic Pro and occasional photo editing. Cant wait to see what they have in store for us.

Well, I’ve been waiting since 2016 for a good no drawbacks upgrade and was prepared to wait more. But as of an hour ago my 2012 rMBP officially died. The display is seeing double and won’t even turn on enough for me to navigate what is on my screen. It just keeps flashing the screen on and off over and over. Its done me well, but it looks like I’m going to have to buy a new Mac. Really hope I can use my desktop gaming pc until the March event. I really hate the idea of buying a 2017. It just hurts so much after waiting so long buying something I know is a side grade if not a downgrade in many respects.
