I use the iPhone alarm (Batman Beyond theme) and a clock radio to wake up. Clock radio is set for 6am, iPhone alarm is set for 6:30.

Does anyone rely on the iPhone alarm for waking up in the morning? Does it work well ie loud enough? Can you assign a ringtone or song instead of the build in sounds?

Sometimes when I'm on the road i rely on my cell phone to wake me up. It works great. Just checking on the iPhone 3G for this.

I have used mine on a daily basis as an alarm since January and it works great.

I love my iPhone as an alarm. I've used it everyday for the past year and it has never failed me once. However since I use "Marimba" to wake me up everyday, when I hear it outside of a 'waking up setting' it makes me cringe.

It's great as an alarm because you can set a different time to wake you on any day of the week, which is a must for any student.

I've used my iPhone 3G as an alarm since buying it the other month. It's fine at waking me up and I quite like the selection available in tones. Only problem is if its a bad night sleep you wake up to it going off and you're in a daze not knowing if it is a text, email, phone call or alarm!! (Despite my tones for all of them being different, an early wake up can obviously make you confused!)

I've been known to try to "snooze" my partner ringing me in a morning or even answering "hello?" to the alarm ringing.

Either way...it wakes me up, whether I'm "with it" or not is another matter!

it only works for me if you use the "alarm" sound. It sounds like the sound you would hear in the city after a bio terrorist attack or something....

but it works. and it's reliable. It's so far been 100% reliable (watch out for the battery dying though...) - but I still ahve not confided in it so I use a night table alarm in conjunction with it.

I use it. The alarm ringtone to be exact. Works like a charm.

I wonder how many other people know that you can lazily shut it up by hitting the sleep button twice to wake and then sleep the phone. Works like a charm and allows me to roll over and go back to sleep if I want. :)

I use the "Old Clock" that sounds like an alarm..it works very well for the EDGE phone. loud and wakes me up, but I'm trying to get a clock/radio alarm thing so i'm telling my parents that it does't wake me up at all.

My iPhone alarm works all the time it has always been reliable .
and i think you only use the sounds that came with your iPhone and the custom ringtones you made on iTunes;)

I think the iPhone makes a great alarm, just don't forget to reset the ringer to a higher level if you ever lower it (happened to me once...needless to say, I missed what ever I had to do that morning :D )

i find it too quiet to wake me up

Pimp up your alarm sound! Get the most penetrating one possible. Another advantage: With this sound it's easy to locate your phone if you can't find it. The seven steps can be done within minutes.

#1 Go there: http://www.iphonehacks.com/2007/08/ringer-volume.html

#2 Scroll down to "Excellent stuff Greg! Thanks a ton for send this in. You can download the enhanced version of 'Cell Phone Ringing' from this link."

#3 Download that special and soundstudio-enhanced (loud, high and multifrequency, shortened the time between rings) sound file.

#4 At this point you may use the methods mentioned in the phonehacks' article "to get this audio as the custom ringtone". I did not test those methods but did it this way (no need to download or install anything):
Import the aif-File to Garage Band (drag and drop in a song).

#5 Create a cycle around it: Hit the two rounded arrows right besides the player controls, then draw a yellow line just below the time line; otherwise you'll get a warning message with detailled instructions after the next step.

#6 Go to "Share" (Garage Band main menue at the top of your screen) and "send it as a ring tone to iTunes" (sorry I don't know the exact phrase because I have a German-language Garage Band).

#7 Synchronize iTunes with your iPhone. Voilà!

Be sure to set the ring tone volume on your iPhone to max. Hope that helps. If you have any questions please ask.

BTW: With the cheap method described above you can create any ring tone out of songs in Garage Band. You can import almost any sound file into it.

Agree with the rest, it works great

I got rid of my alarm clock, since, like a previous poster said, I don't need to worry about power failures with the iPhone. My wife and I both have our alarms on it, and it wakes us up fine (and I wear ear plugs at night; trains nearby). Also, you can just hit the top sleep/wake button to turn it off, you don't need to slide it on to shut the alarm off. There is also an option to turn on/off snooze.

I have assigned 3 alarm modes on mine:

Weekdays
Weekends
Travel

Works very well for me at least. Oh yeah, I have very keen hearing so I have the volume set to mid-way.

:apple:

But your iPhone is still powered on unless you do a "Slide to Power off" shutdown, even if the display is dark (device locked) and the radios are in Airplane Mode. It's just in a lower power mode if the display is off and no application or radio services are running.

The alarm will still sound even if the display is off and the Clock app would not be the visible running app if the display were on (e.g. you could switch to another app and hit the lock button on top).

.

Yes, of course. I do realize that airplane mode is not the same as powering off, which is why I now use it when I want to wake up to the alarm. Thanks.

Y'all are awesome, thanks for all the replies. I can scratch that one off the list.

Use it everyday, it still goes off with the phone on silent mode which is really nice :)

Just to clarify (because I am paranoid). Can I turn the ringer off the iPhone before going to bed, but still have the alarm go off in the morning?

Seeking confirmation that the iPhone must remain powered on for the alarm to sound. Prior to acquiring the iPhone, I had relied on my handphones everyday for years as my sole alarm clock. I have the same practice with my iPhone. However, whereas my previous Nokias and Samsungs could automatically power-on at the appropriate time, I believe the alarm only goes off if the iPhone is switched on. There were a couple of days where I missed the alarm and assumed it was because it was switched off. Since then, I've left the iPhone on and switched on the airplane mode to avoid being disturbed by unwanted calls. Since we're all aware how battery life on this machine is precious, I would prefer to switch it off if possible.

I think others have addressed your concern about "turning the phone off". If you consider your phone being locked as "off", then yes, alarm comes on, and I too find it a very effective alarm. As far as your power concern, i dont think anyone mentioned that there is no perceived power loss by leaving your phone in the locked position, at least for me. I only sleep about 5-6 hrs though. Even on low battery, my phone has never failed to alarm. Overall, as others have stated, it works great. So much so that i got rid of my dedicated alarm clock that was not reliable due to frequent power interruption in my area.

I use my iPhone 3G for my alarm and have since the day my first gen came home. I play whichever ringtone I'm in the mood for. Usually one that is moderately calm and before I go to bed I turn the ringer volume below 1/2 because the ringer is quite loud. Works great. Reliable and just another subtle thing I love about the iPhone. (it's not necessarily unique, just useful.)

I use mine every day, but I have had problems with it. I haven't specifically tried to reproduce it but it will just not go off, and them will go off hours later.

I think it has happened whenever I have a calendar event alert go off when the alarm should be going. I'll try to remember to test it. But for now I just make sure I don't have any alerts going off when I have an alarm going off.
