No I was born last night so I'm unaware of that fact.......

Wal Mart's portion of the electronics market is driven by televisions low end consumer electronics. How about you go out and buy yourself an ipad there and then let us all know how many other people were there buying one alongside you?

Right or wrong, part of Apple's success has always been it's branding, selling their products at Wal Mart/Target and to some extent Best Buy sullies that branding for many people.

And video games and cameras. It's certainly not all low end electronics since they already carry iPods and have carried iPhones in the past.

I don't own and ipad. If I wanted to purchase one I wouldn't do it at Wal-Mart. I'm not really offended by Wal Mart selling Apple products but I do think it cheapens the experience of owning an Apple product for many people, including myself. As I said a big part of Apple's appeal is it's branding. If you can casually pick up something at Wal Mart it's simply not as appealing to many people.

If the reason people are buying Apple products is to look cool and they decide that they are no longer cool because they can be bought at WM I'm happy with that. I've used Apple products for years because they work for me, and am almost to the point where I want to hide my Apple stuff so as not to be associated with people like you and those you describe.

The vast majority of Wal Mart's clientele don't have an extra $500+ in their pockets to begin with.

3-4 digit price tags are not uncommon in Wal-Mart.

And with a compulsory shopping season coming, you might be surprised at how many people walk in having decided to buy something but not knowing what, and would rather walk out with something expensive than with nothing.

I don't like Apple products being associated with anything common.

Snobby? Probably. That's still the case though.

Gee golly jeepers! I sure as hell hope you don't drink CocaCola, Sprite, Starbucks Coffee, Bottled Water, Milk, or use batteries (of any kind), or toilet paper since all those things are also sold @ Wal-Mart! You must live in complete misery, having to look all around you and realize that all those things filling up your drawers, closets, pantry, and shelves all are easily accessible by the less awesome proletariat!

Finally....You may be right in that holiday shopping gives ipad at Wal Mart a boost in sales. But I will still be surprised if it is as much as the Oracle at Delphi (CNN Money) claims.

I don't care what Walmart sells. I'm not going in there.

(If I did - the next thing you know, I'd be the newest picture on peopleofwalmart.com)

(You know, with my blond wig with flowing locks, and my purple spandex pants and big old fu manchu moustache.)

Oh yes, far be it for high-classed you to shop at any place below the standards of what you'd find on Melrose Avenue, Sacks or Nordstrom, or do you shop only at places that you can make a personal shopping appointment with a personal server to help you buy your underwear and socks?

I'm sure a lot of people don't want to stand in line but guess what...Apple will have it delivered to your house!

Couldn't the same be said about walmart.com? It would seem that Walmart will have the same shipping options that Apple did at the initial launch - order it online and have it shipped to your closest store free [almost like the Apple reserve option at launch] or shipped to your home.

Get over yourself, son. I was making a joke.

Geeze.

The only thing worse than being caught on peopleofwalmart.com is to be caiught looking at peopleatwalmart.com

How many people will actually go to Wal Mart and casually buy an ipad? The vast majority of Wal Mart's clientele don't have an extra $500+ in their pockets to begin with. Given that the device doesn't have a display model that people can actually put their grubby hands on I don't see it being a huge seller for Wal Mart's clientele. Even among the portion of Wal Mart's clientele that can afford an ipad, most of them aren't going to buy it at Wal Mart. Wal Mart is where they go to buy toilet paper, cheap beer, and diapers.

This is just ignorant. As mentioned Wal-Mart sells a ton of electronics. Many of them more expensive than an iPad. I don't know where people come up with these crazy notions about Wal-Mart, or the people who shop there.

Yeah I am sure Wal-Mart will not sell any iPads. That is just foolish. It only hurts the branding to people with brain damage. Normal people don't care, and accessibility is more important. Apple went the exclusive route in the past and it left them with 3% of the PC market. They have gotten a lot brighter since then. What your product is, is much more important than where you sell it. You want to sell it everywhere, you want to be ubiquitous.

For people like you who have an irrational fear of wal-mart, do you hate money?

Looking at the bigger picture, this is good for all ipad owners and even iPhone owners. What this does is expand the customer base for IOS which ultimately means an even more attractive user base to application developers, which means IOS will continue to be the premium mobile operating system of choice for application developers.

Christmas is coming up soon. Do you think everyone wants to drive to the nearest Apple Store (which isn't all that close for a lot of people) to stand in line at an Apple Store waiting for the next Genius to become available, or would it be better if they could drive to their local WalMart or Target and pick one up?

Exactly, I don't know why so many Wallyworld haters don't see this? It's already a nightmare going to the Apple stores year round, it's always extremely busy and packed. During the holiday (especially on Black Friday) people are generally buying these products for other people that are already familiar with the product, they are just buying them as gifts so they don't need carte blanche personal service from a classy store, they just want to walk in and get it and get out as quick as they can.

Gotta keep them poor folk from touching an Apple product, huh? I guess they should know their place.

Apple don't serve their kind here!

I don't get it - why is it such a big deal here on macrumors if a retailer like wal-mart, best buy or whatever offers iPads?
This seems not very spectacular or even newsworthy, or am I missing something? Is this maybe merely a US-thing?

It speaks to the success of Apple (and the iPad) more than anything else. Not too long ago you couldn't buy any Apple products in general retail stores! My, how they've grown to selling computers and iDevices all over the retail world map.

Wal-Mart, as I'm sure you have surmised, is not held in high opinion by some. Some of it I can understand -- the bullying, killing the competition and the local stores. (Which in itself is a bit hypocritical because, by and large, the public wants lower prices, and they don't care how it's done.) The way they tend to force manufacturers to cheapen the quality of their goods just to keep the almighty prices down. Yeah, I get that. But that's not the objection here. The objection in this thread is just elitism, plain and simple.

I think that there's only a small minority of people who actually subscribe to the elitism argument, but they are the ones that always bring it up whenever we hear a story like this about how Apple products are that much more accessible to the "common folk". They complained when the iPad became available at Best Buy. They complained when the iPad became available at Target. So of course, they complain about Wal-Mart too. But these are the same folks who also complained when their favourite Apple Store was out of stock. So.....

Perhaps you're getting WalMart mixed up with Sam's Club.

Maybe you're not aware of how many people shop for groceries at Wal-Mart?

Fact is, for a good chunk of the population, this is the only game in town. So they buy just about everything there, yes, including electronics. Ever read about how many TVs they sell? They cost as much as an iPad.

I bet you also sneer at people using Windows laptops near you, and then act shocked and surprised when your snide comments and snobbish look bring a retaliation your way, and then you proclaim

'Oh you Windows users always pick on us Mac users! Is it because you know we're better than you?'

I worked with a guy like you at College. Nobody liked him.

Some men just don't want to be seen at any place where women can by tampons and an iPad at the same time. :D

I would think of it quite the opposite. Whenever I go into Target there aren't many people there. When I go to Wal-Mart it is usually packed, much like an Apple Store.
When I think of target, I think "it's a store" (For some reason, the bright shiny-ness is all gone since I grew up and the fun toy sections shrank :p).

I think Wal-Mart, and I think wilted food, dingy lighting, dingy floors, and of the worst/most insulting interactions with retail management I've ever had as a consumer. And that's just what I think of what's IN the store. I' seem to recall a funny story about a lawn mower manufacturer seeing shock on a VP's face when the manufacturer said "We won't cheapen our product to sell cheap to you, bye bye!"

I think they should close up all the Apple Stores in the malls, and move their online ordering website to a secret URL. Only people "in the know" can buy Apple products, and if you want one, you have to be friends with someone who can invite you into the club.

Then, when people see you with your iPod or iPad, they'll look on in wonder, and they'll know: you're cool. You're one of the special people.
They already have that secret store - how do you think I got my iPhone 4 RED?

Super Walmarts also sell groceries/frozen foods.
