Never mind ipad mini, i want an ipad GRANDE!

An ipad with a 22 inch display. Perfect for board games!

How many apps will run on this new iPad without modification?

With the iPhone 5 100% of previous iPhone apps work fine. I thought they would just change of their own accord - like Android apps, or OS X apps on various screen sizes - but Apple wanted to keep things "as the developer intended".

How is this possible with a smaller display? I'm not trying to be irritating, I'm curious to see if anyone has any ideas. :)

I would agree. I don't understand the "one size fits all" brigade because we are all different and so are our tech requirements. The iPad Mini will almost certainly appeal to different demographic to the larger iPad.

And to say that market doesn't exist is just plain nonsense. Ars Technica recently reported an interesting study that seemed to have bypassed the Mac sites showing that the iPad's market share in the US has fallen from 81% in 2011 to 52% in 2012 as the other devices gain sales and traction. I don't know if that's true or not but Apple will have the numbers to see how the iPad is selling so maybe they can see a trend and want to ensure that they dominate that market to.

The interesting thing about a 7.85" display is that, given the same resolution as the current iPad, its PPI will be identical to the equivalent iPhone. Now Apple recommends touch targets be at least 44x44 pixels on a non-retina display (88x88 px retina), regardless of the device. So as long as app developer followed that guideline it should be perfectly usable.

iPad mini could happen next year but right now please release iMac and 13 in Retina Macbook Pro Apple!

I just hope Apple is humble enough to realize that humans have preferred pens for a few milleniums over fingers to write and draw, even when Samsung is saying that already.

Also they could put optional cursor keys and even an Option key to ipad's virtual keyboard.
Who would have thought, that when keyboard is no longer physical and therefore you could easily have customized keyboards, these suddenly are bad thing for "using experience"?

I really dont see what price will they release this at? The iPod touch begins at 299$ and iPad 2 is 399$ 16gb. I guess if this does come out, iPad 2 will be discontinued.

iPad mini. That would be a really silly product. In my opinion the current iPad is to small already, and now they are maby coming out with something smaller with less resolution ? Facepalm!

How about they start thinking about the pro marked again, and come out with new imac's and mac pro's ?

Release an 32 inch oled imac with 6core cpu and I will convert from PC to mac again.

Therein lies the route to bankruptcy. If you don't believe me just look at all the other struggling computer makers out there.

Like it or not iOS devices is where the money is. Apple's cash pile proves that.

They are not abandoning the pro market (look at the MBP-Retina) - they have just moved it down the pecking order in their corporate priority list.

Not happy? There are plenty of companies still willing to sell you a top end pro desktop or server. Apple never had much success in this market anyway because it's driven by cost and managed largely by Microsoft trained IT engineers.

The first rule of business: go where the money is. Let somebody else fulfill the niche and low margin markets.

Do I wish they would hurry up and release new versions of the iMac, Mac Pro and Mac Mini - yes of course I do. I'm a Mac user/fan first and foremost. The iOS devices are more of an add on for me, but I know the score. I'm sure they will have a cracking new iMac out sometime soon and I think they may have something new and innovative up their sleeves for the Mac Mini/Pro desktop market. Maybe a modular system that you can expand to meet your power/performance needs.

I don't believe you would ever come back to the Mac as you say. The average PC is considerably cheaper and there is a lot more pro software. No the Mac is a leap of faith for most people. We stick with it and grumble because at the end of the day we love the Mac no matter what. If I was you I would stay with your PC and be happy with that.

That depends on what Apple and Microsoft does in the future.

Im no fan of the ipad even though i have the first one and write all my posts here on it.
I look at ipad as a giant and unpractical mobile phone and think its a way to closed system.

I also have an 2006 imac but am a big fan of the imac consept.
I just dont think they are quite powerfull enough for my use (wich is music composing/production with Pro Tools) .

So if the consumer marked will be Apples only focus i wont come back.
If they however do cater also to the pro marked i might consider a switch.

But as you say, pc's are less expensive and that is also an factor.

If I was you I would stay with your PC and be happy with that.

For now i will!

I am willing to bet the iPad 2 goes away and the mini takes its place.

I don't buy the resolution bit. IMO it'll have a resolution that'll allow it to scale for existing iPad apps easily. Apple has been in this game for a while now, and they've already proven they care about devs having to resize stuff with the way they handled the iPhone 5. This thing IS happening, and it WILL be retina.

1024x768 pixel display is not enough for me. Then I would go with the iPad 3. Isn't it possible: iPad mini with 1920x1080 pixel?

Not if Apple wishes to maintain compatibility with existing iPad apps.

The only other HD tablet I know of is the new Kindle Fire HD, but it isn't available in Europe in 1920x1080. Only 1280x800 is available for us, but this isn't Full HD. Maybe I can order it somewhere (ebay, Amazon.com) or I wait for a price drop of the iPad 3 when the iPad mini launches. Hopefully there is a price drop of iPad 3 then.

Something else occurred to me. What will Apple's reason be for intruding this? Tim Cook isn't going to stand on stage and say "There's a huge market for ~7" tablets, and we want in, so here's the iPad mini!"

I still can't really see what the benefits of an iPad mini are. The iPad is already REALLY portable and small and does everything I need it to do. Other than price, what would be the justification to buy one? As an e-reader? Browsing, email, apps, etc..? I could do all that on the already portable iPad.

What category does it fit in where it would add enhanced, or even alternate value? What's its justification as a product?

heh heh, may be you can hold your Ipad more often and travel more with your ipad?

Ipad is a mobile device which mean lighter is better, smaller is better and as always, cheaper is better. I have an Ipad 3 and when I hold it more than 15 minutes in one hand, I have to switch hand. A less than 1 lb device is much better than 1.5lb (Ipad 3) mobile device. The 7.87 inches display is probably good enough for a lot of people for a lot of purpose. And it can fit in a jacket pocket or small handbag. Lower price will definitely help broaden the appeal . What is not to like with a 299 or so entry price of a 7.87 inches Ipad mini??? I would love to get my hand on a 3g/LTE version for travelling even though I have an Ipad 3 now.
