What do you guys think of this

"Now, because the iPad mini will squeeze the iPad 2′s 1024-by-768 9.7-inch display onto an area that’s at least 40 percent smaller, the individual pixels will be closer together so pixelation will be less visible, conventional wisdom has it.

Who knows, Apple engineers could even hit the magic 320 pixels-per-inch density required to justify the Retina moniker, even if it means slightly increasing the resolution beyond 1024-by-768."

Exactly. We have to compare with 3GS resolution to check if thats possible.

I don't know, perhaps everyone should just make 50" TV screens.
I mean what's the point in a smaller one when the bigger one can do it all?

I would agree. I don't understand the "one size fits all" brigade because we are all different and so are our tech requirements. The iPad Mini will almost certainly appeal to different demographic to the larger iPad.

And to say that market doesn't exist is just plain nonsense. Ars Technica recently reported an interesting study that seemed to have bypassed the Mac sites showing that the iPad's market share in the US has fallen from 81% in 2011 to 52% in 2012 as the other devices gain sales and traction. I don't know if that's true or not but Apple will have the numbers to see how the iPad is selling so maybe they can see a trend and want to ensure that they dominate that market to.

I for one has always felt the iPad is to big and heavy. I would seriously consider an iPad mini. Seems like a good combo between an iPad and a Kindle.

+1

The iPad Mini would be more "portable" than the current one for gaming, browsing, reading, etc.

My prediction for launch prices according to the current iPod Touch and New iPad models in the UK:

Ipad Mini (WIFI only model)
16Gb £289
32Gb £369
64Gb £449

A5X processor and retina on all models

I know I'm flipping out but would be nice to have the iPad Mini in several brushed aluminum colors...

iPad is quite heavy for prolonged use for me and definitely for kids (especially when are playing). So lighter one will be godsend. Also, I have a knee surgery and not having to carry heavy things (even including the iPad, which is quite light), would be good for me.

Yep! Didn't take long for Tim Cook to completely re-write the legacy of Steve Jobs. :(

What are you talking about. The legacy of Steve Jobs is the iPod/iPhone/iPad revolution not one device. You think those products should stand still in a rapidly changing market? You're crazy.

One day the iPhone will replace your wallet, keys, etc. It will control your smart car, your smart home as well as your smart TV.

One day the iPad will replace the laptop. It will be the only computer most people need. It will come in a range of sizes.

That will be Steve's greatest legacy. The computer redefined for the 21st century.

You might want to start looking for an alternate gift then. It's not going to be £199.99.

£299-£329 is more realistic assuming the entry model is 16GB. TOTALLY AGREE!!

Apple isn't going to sell at loss or break even like the other Android tabs. Apple, and also Wall Street, is going to need a 35-40% markup over cost.

Obvious scenario seems to me that Apple will:

1) Discontinue the iPad 2 (old Dock Connector)
AGREE
2) Intro the mini to take it's place on the price point AGREE
3) Revise the "new iPad" to include a Lightning connector in place of the D.C.
Not quite sure about this (Nr 3). I think they will keep the New iPad as it is (strong sales anyway) and leave the Lightning Connector for The New New iPad 2013 A6 ;)

Has Apple ever had a product announcement where invitations went out in less than a week?
Because if the rumors of an announcement being made on Oct 10th are true, then that would have to be today?

Why can't the purported iPad mini have a 1/2 sized Retina display: 1024x1536. The display could probably be easily/cheaply produced with current machinery, and at the same time giving Apple the 'resolutionary' edge over Google and Amazon.

Anybody???
Apple was able to change the resolution of the iphone 5 to widescreen so its seems they should be able to come up with a decent resolution that's not just the same, or pixel doubling of the old resolution. What's the problem? They should be able to do 1024x1536.

Read it again. The invites will go out on 10 Oct for a media event on 17 Oct with product release probably sometime the following week along with the new iPods and new iTunes.

Thanks for clarifying!

If you particularly wanted to demonstrate your bad grammar, you could indeed type that.

I'm not entirely sure what exactly constitutes a troll, but I'm just very angry with Apple's lack of respect for their customers and equally angry with all the consumers blindly buying Apple's under-par products. For a company that demands such a high price and has such enormous amounts of cash, I don't feel such a high number of mistakes are acceptable.

Some people love to use the word 'cult' when talking about Apple's customers, but I see a lot more 'cult' like behavior from people who hate or who are, at least, "…just very angry…" with Apple. There seems to be so many people who can't, for whatever reason, just 'vote with their wallet' and move on with their lives.

Wow, you can see into the future? Look into your crystal ball and tell us when will Apple release new iMacs, Mac Pros, and the Classic iPod?

Considering Christmas is still a few months away, I think you have time ;)

An iPad mini for a toddler? Wow. Not judging though :)

A few weeks ago, whilst sitting in a caffe, drinking coffee and reading forum posts on my iPad, I noticed, at the table across from me, a young father with two just barely older than toddler children who were using 'child proofed' iPads. They seemed quit happy with them.

Article in Today's UK Paper saying the iPad Mini is coming and should cost £200

They mentioned a Kindle at £129 and the Nexus at £159, and, as I said, the iPad Mini will be £200 they think.

£200 would be a good price. A bit more than the competition, but not so far ahead that people think, so that, I will be something else.

I don't think it will cos this much.

£299 I think is too much, if it's non retina, the iPad 2 is only £30 more at £329

So no-one would buy the smaller model for a saving of just £30 over the bigger screen.

I'd imagine £249 would be the sweet spot.

Or course, £200 would be more sensible, they would get more sales, and get more people "into" Apple but I'd be surprised to see it that low.

They could go £299 then kill of the iPad2. Perhaps that's their plan, but this puts the Apple mini tablet at around twice the price of others.

Why iPad mini would be a logic evolution? I see two versions of this product.

1. 'Cheap' version with non retina display
Name: iReader
For who: people who read a lot, and uses kindle style machines. Students, commuters...
Price: $129 or below
Benefit: grab this market of readers, and create hallow effect . Also provide much better reading experience than other readers.
Features: super thin, lighter (can hold without problem), limited iOS, very very long battery life.

2. Mini iPad as leaked, with full features of new iPad.
Name: iPad mini
For who: pros, people who bought the RMB.
Price: $700
Benefit: the roll Royce of smaller size tablets.

I did not explain in too much details my reasoning, on order to make this first post simple.

This is my first post, so go easy on me... But tell me what you think.

It would really surprise me that Apple would release a brand new product, name it iPad mini, with nearly $600 difference in price ($700-$129?) just for the sake of a retina display.
I don't think so.

It would be either Retina for both the WIFI and WIFI+3G/4G models or non Retina for all of them. The price tag difference would come as per current iPad models.

Also, $129 for an entry model? Not in a lifetime! The iPod classic is $249 with no retina, no wifi or cellular capabilities, no apps, no touch display, etc.

$700 is also TOO overpriced bearing in mind the New iPad WIFI+3G top-of-the-range is currently $829. THIS is not only the Rolls Royce of iPads but the Rolls Royce of all tablets!

The iPad Mini would be the BMW series 1, Audi A3, Mercedes B, Volvo C30 of the tablet market.

The market Apple is looking with the iPad mini is:

- People like me, who likes the iPad but found it too bulky/heavy/expensive

- Android/AMZ Fire and such customers who wish to finally switch to iOS at an affordable price ($299-$399 entry model?)

- Families with children who could finally get an affordable iPad for them (and stop sticky fingers once and for all)

I can't wait to order 2 iPad Minis...

I wonder if the iPad Mini will come with the same wifi issues, bluetooth drop-outs, scuffs, scratches, dents, camera purple-fringing, terrible Maps app, lack of accessory support and with no adaptors available.

This is, after all, the Apple we've all come to know and love...

strange, i dont have those problems w/ my iOS devices, including iphone5. what are you doing to your gear??

and i love the new Maps app. lovely to use, sips far less data.

apple is still delighting me, the customer, which is their job. now more so than ever (i started on an Apple ][e). keep up the good work!
