RIMM blows out earnings!!! Bad news for Apple? No....

Rimm just beat earnings by more than 11%. While that would seem to be bad news for Apple at first, it says a few things that bode well for Apple.

1. The smart phone market is strong and growing.

2. Rimm building a customer base doesn't mean that Apple cannot compete. Look for sales of lesser phones to decrease as more and more people move up to smart phones.

3. This space (smart phones) is where the industry is headed. Kinda like Wayne Gretsky saying that he wouldn't skate to where the puck was, he always skated to where he thought the puck was going to be. That's was Apple has done, and it looks like their timing is good.

4. The American consumer is consuming again! Our economy is not going down the drain. People have money for things like fancy cell phones. The usual FUD just ain't there! (Yes, ain't is a valid word)

5. There is more than enough room in this market for both Apple and RIMM, some of the others are going to be in trouble. Like Motorola. Moto makes great LOOKING phones. But they don't excel in user interfaces.

In five years

looks like they have some ideas for an iphone rev b

Dude, take a look at the 1st gen iPod of five years ago - 5 GB, low res and big and bulky... an eyesore compared to what's available today.

Think of the iPhone as the least powerful, lowest memory, worst battery life, worst screen you can buy, becasue from now on, it's the minimum bar. It's scary to think what we'll have in five years - as the phone market is a very competitive so expect a lot.

This is a great day for consuming these things. Let's see what HTC and Samsung come up with in a few months.

Now if we can just get wimax throughout the US... Lucky Koreans...

some pretty interesting non-announcement announcements in there:

1) ringtones from itunes are coming
2) purchasing itunes content over the air is coming
3) VoIP is currently not on the road map (though jobs may have been coy with the head of at&t in the room)
4) wifi/cellular switching is probably coming
5) apple was considering an MVNO

I'm willing to bet that, before too long, Apple will have an iPhone version of the iTMS, with ringtones and most, if not all, of the current catalog. Accessible directly from the iPhone. There's just no way I can see it not happening. And because it would be an iPhone-specific store, if AT&T really put up a stink, Apple could give them a cut of the sales from that store.

If you at a hot spot that's fine but if you not do you really want to download over EDGE? Why bother with the slow download, just wait till you get home.

I want to see Apple work on more important issues.

good Q&A, noone

I've got a 2nd-gen iPod that pretty much agrees with this statement. Why bother with 1st-gen anything?

Because you need, want, or will get significant value out of the product's CURRENT features during the next 6 months.

If (like me) you don't need or want a phone until later, then of course it makes sense to wait. Things get better and cheaper with time.

Same I got the 2nd Generation iPod it was a brilliant engineered piece of equipment for when it was released. The 1st generation Apple equipment never seems to be very good, they use it as a test I'm guessing and I don't think the new iPhone would be much different in that regard.

Whatever happens the iPhone will be a ground breaking and high selling product just like the iPod.

Ringtones are smaller files, so they'd download fine from EDGE. But yeah, you'd need wifi for full songs. But that's ok. And once 3G comes around, it would really be fine.

Nice breath of fresh air.

The media is in a frenzy to kill off the iPhone launch. They are all playing it down! Amazing! And the bias at CNBC is astounding.

They are sure it will flop. Shows you what they know...

You haven't heard on CNBC that executive at both Motorola and PALM are concerned about the threat that the iPhone poses.

What do they know, they are just highly paid executives that get paid to worry about real threats to their companies success. For them to come out publicly with concerns over the iPhone is huge! But apparently not newsworthy at CNBC. But then they have been spreading lies about the iPhone for the last two weeks. Speculation and conjecture and reporter's personal opinions presented as fact. This is what passes as journalism nowadays. No wonder their ratings are plummeting and their reputations are in the waste basket.

Sad :(

Ringtones

I think he did respond to the question about ringtones. Right now cell phone companies sell ringtones (its a revenue stream they'd like to own). Steve said itunes is a better platform to sell ringtones (we are #3 blah blah). What he's saying is that they have come up with some agreement with AT&T to let them sell ring tones through itunes and they can hit higher numbers that way.

I think the hidden message in the response is that they will sell it through itunes and nobody can stop them. Why should they share that with AT&T, its an open market for ringtones.

My 1G iPod is still kicking just fine :)

Mine too. Never had a battery issue of course it doesn't last as long as it used to, but it can go for the day if I recharge it each night.

And for the record - I too am surprised that Steve used "aint" and "Doggone" - I want to see the actual transcripts here. This needs to be investigated. ;)

You really think so?

Yes, I do. English is a living breathing thing. Unlike the French who prefer to legislate the way their population uses the French language, English is very muc a fluid thing. There are definitely times when ain't is the right word for the job.

One of my professors in College profess and defended the use of ain't vehemently. But what does she know, she's only published 10 extremely successful books...

I'll have to trust Steve's comments about the size of 3G chipsets, but I 100% agree with him on 3G's voracious appetite for power. As a current user of Cingular's(HTC) 8525, I can notice a big difference in battery life between the EDGE and 3G networks. Certainly, the speed of 3G is nice (incredible actually), but it's worthless if it drains your battery before you can charge.

I don't know if it's that astounding - isn't CNBC/MSNBC/NBC a huge Microsoft partner? I wouldn't be surprised if Steve Balmer was the EP for "Mad Money".

I'm not saying that CNBC should not be discussing the issues with the iPhone. I just haven't seen any of the positive features mentioned. They routinely tease with headlines like "Why you shouldn't buy an iPhone!!! Tune in at 10 to find out why"

The iPhone clearly has positives and negatives. If you watch TV currently you won't hear very many positives and the negatives are turned into sensational headlines.

The speed of the network comes up a lot. Did ANY reporter bother to download the same web page on a 3g phone and an EDGE phone to see what the actual (read Factual) difference in download time was??? No.

Is 3G 50% faster? 100% Faster? Oh, and they NEVER mention that 3G uses tons more battery power and costs a lot more per month.

I'm just saying...

I got a hunch he wasn't referring to the "ain't" part - he was reffering to the strong consumer part...

You haven't heard any reporters mention the fact that the faster 3G network eats batteries alive, have you? Our media today is all hype and cheap shots. Just look at how much attention was paid to Paris Hilton this last month.

'nough said!

they talked about voip quite a bit. steve thought someone might develop a web based voip and the at&t guy said they weren't opposed to voip.
