So, to the 3G critics: do you want speed or battery life? I'll take battery life. There simply isn't a 3G device on the market that can compete with this.

Well, I'm sitting here with my Sony Ericsson z610i on 3 -- a dedicated 3G network in the UK if I understand correctly -- which I charge about once a week ... sometimes not even that often.

Horses for courses, I suppose.

Cheers

Jim

I'll have to trust Steve's comments about the size of 3G chipsets, but I 100% agree with him on 3G's voracious appetite for power. As a current user of Cingular's(HTC) 8525, I can notice a big difference in battery life between the EDGE and 3G networks. Certainly, the speed of 3G is nice (incredible actually), but it's worthless if it drains your battery before you can charge.

I'm spending an extended period of time in Europe right now and am using a Vodafone 3G dongle modem as my primary internet interface. It is really quite fast (and I have a 5GB/month limit), but the modem itself gets extremely hot. I can't imagine having something similar in a phone. It would suck juice and bake like nobody's business. I'm sure that the electronics in the modem are somewhat different than a phone, but you could cook stuff on this thing.

And had Apple included a 3G option, the critics would be endlessly bashing the battery life....

I'm very surprised about the length of the current battery life: its really quite impressive - considering the reviewers used internet, listened to music - so quite heavy use and the iPhone battery lasted for 14 hours... so a days heavy use.

as in everywhere in the united states i would care to live or visit, everywhere in europe, and most places in australia and asia, and coming soon to jesusland, usa as well

i like to know that my $600 phone is future proofed, and has the latest tech in it

i have been using 3g for some time now, its not new, and if i were to go to some hick backwater without 3g it would go to edge by default

also i have said it a million times on here, if you dont like 3g burning through your battery you can turn it off and force your phone to use only edge... my phone has 3g and wifi and the wifi uses far more power htan the 3g, and is inconvenient.

one more thing, normal 3g phones have removable batteries and come with 2, as well as a charger, so you always have an extra battery and you never have to charge your phone

I think I speak for the majority of the people here when I say, "Don't buy this phone because it wasn't made for you." Wait until Steve calls you and asks EXACTLY what you are wanting for a phone so that Apple can make one just for you.

Lost oportunity

I caan't believe they did not ask about:
1) Video iChat
2) GPS

and yes, there was little there for answers, very little meat in this report.

Reporters no longer ask pointed questions and refrase the question when they don't get a decent answer?

Rimm just beat earnings by more than 11%. While that would seem to be bad news for Apple at first, it says a few things that bode well for Apple.

1. The smart phone market is strong and growing.

2. Rimm building a customer base doesn't mean that Apple cannot compete. Look for sales of lesser phones to decrease as more and more people move up to smart phones.

3. This space (smart phones) is where the industry is headed. Kinda like Wayne Gretsky saying that he wouldn't skate to where the puck was, he always skated to where he thought the puck was going to be. That's was Apple has done, and it looks like their timing is good.

4. The American consumer is consuming again! Our economy is not going down the drain. People have money for things like fancy cell phones. The usual FUD just ain't there! (Yes, ain't is a valid word)

5. There is more than enough room in this market for both Apple and RIMM, some of the others are going to be in trouble. Like Motorola. Moto makes great LOOKING phones. But they don't excel in user interfaces.

This is very positive for Apple. Rim should continue to drive the need for corporate phones and secured corporate services. Mean time Apple is working on adding those features to the iPhone.

They keep it healthy, Apple takes it over in about 12 to 18 months.

AMEN!!!!!

If you dont want 3G, just turn it off!! However, they do not have the right to limit their customers. If they were so concerned about the battery life, they should have made it replaceable such that people could carry two batteries and switch whenever they need to!!!

I do not get these Apple fanatics; they defend ANYTHING Apple does. The CEO could ask them to jump, and their immediate answer would be: "how high do you want me to jump Steve?"

However, they do not have the right to limit their customers.

Hmm...I'm pretty sure Apple has the right to release whatever product they want (illegal activity notwithstanding). The customers always have the right to shop elsewhere.

True! But dont expect the masses to move towards a limiting product!

Only time will tell. But I think Apple will blow through their initial supply, so it's not exactly turning the masses away at this point.

For me? If I was going to buy it, I wouldn't care about the lack of 3G. 95% of my day is spent near a wifi connection, so it just wouldn't be an issue.
