Every time you walk into *ANY* store, before you go to pay you should ask, "Do you accept Apple Pay?" And if they say no, then *SIGH*.
If enough people show displeasure, it will flow to the top and maybe, maybe create change.

Anytime you go into a Store and ask if they accept NFC and don't. Then sigh. Apple Pay is not exclusive. It'll work will all NFC payments including Google Wallet and Soft Card

Seeing a lot of this "Apple Pay is just NFC like any other" - I'd like to see more info that backs this up, as I understand it is not nearly that simple.

And the U.S. federal government is the largest employer in the world. The biggest entities don't always make the best business decisions. Truth is that Target is on board, and as a competitor, Walmart will do the same once usage dictates it. If it doesn't gain traction then they won't. The thing to remember about Walmart is that they keep their prices low and maximize profits because they are ruthless in negotiating with vendors, much more than Steve Jobs and Apple ever were with record labels.
Even if it catches on, if their revenue and growth are tracking as expected, there is no need for them to accept another format.

Keep in mind that this is not a global payment method used by all phones, just iPhones.

I predict that there will be a global app that will work with all phones in which more merchants will accept.

I think Apple is trying to get pole position but who wins the race is what really matters.

But they don't match the lack of sales tax charged. People in many states are supposed to self report what they bought from Amazon and the like and pay with their state income taxes....but few do. This advantage is probably only temporary and has already been done away with in some states that have forced Amazon to collect for them. But for now there is an advantage to buying from Amazon.

So people should only support their local Apple store and forget about other local stores?

Or maybe :apple:Pay will be the next FireWire? Stranger things have happened.

FWIW, I don't necessarily fault WalMart for their decision. The Waltons are billionaires and are NOT dumb or in need of a Supply & Demand 101 course. I'm sure they've explored the idea, done a ROI cost analysis, and have decided that they can hold off the expense of offering NFS as an option. For now.

ApplePay could be another Ping for all we know. Not likely, but possible.

If ApplePay is a runaway hit, WalMart will reconsider. The cost of implementing NFS chain wide? Alice Walton probably cleans that much out of the lint trap of the family clothes dryer on a weekly basis.

The Walton family have no animus against Apple that I'm aware of, and love making money. When the tipping point is reached, Tim Cook gets a call and WalMart is on board.

There is no payment system invented by apple. Geez people need to understand things before posting or at the very least read past a headline.

I know the headline makes it sound like Apple and Wal-Mart were negotiating into the wee hrs of the morning and then Wal-Mart emphatically said NO WE WILL NOT SUPPORT THIS. But that's not the case. Apple pay is nfc. That's it. Wal-Mart, best buy and any other major retailer that doesn't have it have been opting out for years.

Why are people acting like Apple was given a swift blow to the face or something because of this? Wal-Mart has been opting out of Google Wallet and ISIS too.

It's not going to affect apple any more than it affects any other nfc friendly company.

But Apple was supposed to change the world!!! They promised that I didn’t have to take my wallet with me. What a load of crap!! It’s not Apple’s fault I get that. The only way this is going to really work is if everyone teams up together (Google, Apple, Microsoft) on one standard. Otherwise the NFC chip is useless.

Apple said in the keynote that it will be accepted anyplace that takes NFC payments. From the way the phone and the retail systems interact, it is just like NFC. The magic difference is in the phone and how it's secured with your fingerprints and in how the card numbers are stored (or actually not stored) on the device or by Apple.

Someone else posted this link. Best article I've seen detailing this:

Walmart and BEST Buy are sad. Why would we as customers want to download ANOTHER rarely used app on our phone. Apple pay IS going to take off and people won't be using MSG/LSD/ MCX or whatever it's called because it will be an app on the last page of their screen IF they even download it at all. It will be to cumbersome. Big mistake. I see them coming around sooner than they think.

They have NFC but wont be accepting apple pay services. CVS was rumored to be part of apple pay but isnt listed as a retailer because they are under Merchant customer exhchange. Apple pay is a merchant service which is why apple will be making money off this.

Nonsense, it's just a major credit card product. Tap it just fine at CVS!

So people should only support their local Apple store and forget about other local stores?

I don't quite see how anything I said implied that? I would order my iPhone from Amazon if I could! Or more likely Tekserve.com as I'm a big fan of them.

And I should (and in fact sometimes do) still shop local occasionally with retailers who provide me a reason to do so....exceptional customer service, special knowledge, etc.

Yeah it does suck if certain retailers refuse to get with the times but that's just how it is. They've been refusing for yrs.

That being said, its a given that nfc usage is going to take off now. At that point Wal-Mart and best buy will be forced to take a look at their stance again.

I can't see them refusing when that happens.

No you haven’t. Don’t be so ridiculous. If Walmart have something you want at the price you want you’ll buy it - we both know you’re not going to opt to pay more because they don’t support FanBoy money. Remember you can’t actually use ApplePay until you’ve actually bought the phone!!

The rate you lot are going Apple will take over the world and then you’ll ask how it happened.

I hate to break this news to you but convenience is a major decision factor in where people choose to shop. If another store has shorter lines or faster payment methods then yes that is a factor. If I have to bring my wallet to pay at
Walmart but Kroger let's me shop without it then yes I'm going to be shopping at Kroger. And the lines at my local Walmart are terrible. This is just the last straw that tells me they don't care about inconveniencing their customers.

My time is very important and price is very seldom the only factor I take into consideration. I'm sorry if that bothers you.... actually no I'm not.

Yep....seems CVS just opted not to do a special tie in to market ApplePay with Apple. I'm sure it will still work. I wonder if the featured retailers will put ApplePay stickers on their terminals to promote it? They will probably get a cut of Apple's cut of the credit card companies' cut of the transaction amount!

Walmart probably knows that their customers can't afford an iPhone 6 anyways, and Best Buy doesn't even have money to pay for their own rent let alone to update their POS terminals.

Actually, if you read the article, there POS terminals and credit card machines support NFC. They disabled it in 2011. Staples has pos systems that support nfc, but its disabled. Hence why people will still continue to use credit cards.

Would be interesting if they're next in line after Target and Home Depot, however. Then it really would be "their loss".

How is it their loss though? Explain it to me as if I were 6.

I don't think it will prevent people from shopping at these places, most people have non Apple phones, and it doesn't monetary benefit these companies, only apple

I'm not going to make my shopping decisions based on which payment system they use. If they have Apple Pay I'll use Apple Pay, if they have CurrentC I'll use CurrentC, if they have both, I'll use Apple Pay.

Aka. Opportunity cost

Ask Target about "their loss" for having to deal with a data breach that has now been dwarfed by Home Depot. Maybe check Target's earnings and stock price since then.

If ApplePay is more secure and can help a company avoid this, then maybe they should consider it. Especially if you are the world's largest retailer....you have the most to lose. Of course NFC/ApplePay isn't the only secure method. WalMart is forcing EMV cards to be inserted rather than swiped. But doing that is less convenient than pointing my phone at the terminal.

Any many of those non Apple phones that WalMart shoppers have support NFC payments....just ask all of the Fandroids who point out that Apple didn't invent this!

It seems that this is a difficult concept for some to understand. Many in this thread talk like the world revolves around Apple. Or at least they hope that day is coming.:D

Same here, except that if they have CurrentC, I'll probably swipe or insert my card rather than sign up for some other payment system. Over time I'll get tired of having to carry my card just to shop at the holdout retailers and will start shopping where I can just use my phone.
