Okay, why does Apple allow this?

Just ban Current C and this app from the app store. If Walmart doesn't want to allow customer to use Apple Pay, why should Apple allow this app to be part of the app store?

Walmart takes chip card transactions anyways--only an idiot would use their stupid QR system.

There should never be any reason to ban any app from a walled garden unless it is malicious.

Walmart is a terrible store in the first place, WHY do people keep shopping there? Sure things are marginally cheaper, but it's not worth the irritation of poor customer service (or complete lack thereof), no checkout lanes open and busted "U-Scan" terminals.

Not to mention the way the treat employees .. no thanks Walmart.

Some people have less money than you.

Walmart sells iPhones. Let's not make snap judgements about what devices their customers use or don't use.

I'm from Oklahoma and return there frequently - my comment reflects what I've observed. There was also a 2015 study showing that iPhone ownership in an area correlated with the proportion of college graduates and socioeconomic status.

I wouldn't be worried except that every time I've tried to use Apple Pay in the last six months it's failed.

Not having any issues at places I know that take it. (And many times the cashiers don't know they take it and are amazed!) I use the MasterCard nearby app to find stores that take NFC payments. I have racked up hundreds of dollars of cash back via Discover's 22% ApplePay offer. :)

Walmart today introduced its own mobile payments service called "Walmart Pay" built into its Walmart app on iOS and Android. The new Apple Pay competitor will roll out in select Walmart stores in the U.S. this month, followed by a nationwide launch within the first half of 2016.

Walmart Pay's QR code-based checkout process will involve opening the Walmart app, selecting Walmart Pay, activating the camera, scanning the code displayed at the register and waiting for the cashier to finish bagging your items. An electronic receipt will automatically be sent to the Walmart app.

The new payments solution will only work in Walmart stores and supports any major credit, debit, pre-paid or Walmart gift card. Walmart says that 22 million customers actively use its Walmart app each month, placing it among the top three retail apps in the App Store and Google Play.

Walmart is among a handful of retailers that have refused to support Apple Pay since its U.S. launch in October 2014. The retailer is instead one of over a dozen retailers committed to the Merchant Customer Exchange (MCX) consortium and its yet-to-launch rival payments service CurrentC.

Walmart's future plans to support Apple Pay or CurrentC remain undisclosed, but the company's senior vice president of services Daniel Eckert said Walmart Pay allows "for integration of other mobile wallets in the future."Walmart App is free on the App Store for iPhone and Apple Watch. Nonsense.

Apple Pay does not have to be the only payment system. All they need to do is support Apple Pay, Android Pay and Samsung Pay as well as their proprietary option then everyone is happy.

This is all about choice for consumers so Walmart are free to implement whatever system they want as long as other choices are available. If they restrict choice it is only going to end badly and they will need to change their policy.

This is very much the wrong decision for Walmart as time will tell.

I do think it is weird that Walmart is putting up a barrier to taking people's money. They must have hired an idiot to replace a retiring genius in the financial dept.

This sucks, I guess they're going to roll it out to ASDA in the UK, too. By years end ASDA are going to be the last big chain super market to not have any intention of supporting mainstream contactless technology for payment in the UK, i understand why they want their own technology, but do they really need to force a low tech solution onto the uk as well? I wish sainsburys would get their arse in gear too, my local sainsburys has had a sign up saying coming soon for weeks, it's literally the last place I need to use a card on my daily routine.

The thing is ASDA do already support contactless in at least my regions of London.. I really hope they don't go ahead and disable that now.

oh no....people will use it....just not me. HA! not even....
Yes, unfortunately I see a bunch of people using this. The people of walmart people.

I pretty much agree. I do shop there occasionally, usually when I don't feel like driving 15 mins to a better store. My Walmart is just 5 minutes away, plus they keep their self checkouts working (well the credit part of it anyways). Overall i've seen a decline in customer service at most retails stores. It very frustrating to go to stores and have to wait on service or wait to give them my money. At the very least a process of me giving them money should be the quickest part of my trip, not the longest.

Until Apple Pay, most merchants weren't using any type of cell phone-based pay system. Now that Apple comes out, people are coming out with them. Only, they're terrible. Unless their solution is easier to use than pulling out a credit card, it's a failure.

I love double tapping the button on my watch then holding it next to the reader for a second. Don't even have to think about touching a pocket. Too bad I've only gotten to use it at vending machines so far...

It seems like swiping a credit card would be faster than this.
And that there's more security in just using old fashioned greenbacks, rather than having all your info being tossed around as a data point between heaven knows who and for how long.

still dont get it, what is so awesome about apple pay? I am using nfc debit/credit cards for years, why should I tap phone instead of card near the reader? where is the benefit?

In Canada tap to pay is limited to $100 with your car and with your phone their is no limit except for the limited on your credit card account

Wow, what a disastrous app. No way in hell would I use that. How is that better for consumers that holding your phone over a reader while your thumb is on the home button? Could you imagine being in line behind someone who's trying to do this? It's insane and will fail within a year.

well, there is pretty steep limit, you can pay only small amount without credentials.. and, truly, is there anybody who does not notice when his card is lost? I can block card in a seccond with bank smart app... so, I dont take safety as a reason

For me personally I was never giving one of those cards by the bank or credit card company. Saw it on the TV, contactless payment blah blah. Never came across one, nobody else I know has one. So I'm actually curious as to how you got one? Or which credit card are we talking about here?

If 22 million people are already using their app, adding additional functionality to it only makes sense for them. Makes even more sense for them since it's ecosystem agnostic. I don't know diddly about their customer demographic data, but I think it's safe to say a significant portion of them don't have the latest NFC equipped devices. QR codes can be read from pretty much any phone. For their business case, it seems smart.

I understand Walmart's reasoning. As convoluted as this sounds, the amount of customers using it is a win win for them.
Walmart never does anything that doesn't benefit Walmart. Its sociopathic greed is a cancer. Each Walmart that opens harms the local economy by eventually eliminating other employers, lowering wages, and sucking profits out of the area into the pockets of the Walton clan.

It's already one step better than CurrentC as it allows any card.

I know they replaced all the non NFC terminals with NFC ones here so I'm sure Apple Pay is coming soon enough. The chip cards at Walmart take forever.

You do realize that "Tap to Pay" is mostly a slogan? You don't need to physically tap the phone onto the reader. Apply Pay utilizes NFC and you just need to hold the iPhone near the reader.

Soon, smartphone users will have 3 or more screens full of Payment Apps.

Last weekend I went to the local chain grocery store, same distance from my house as WalMart. While I was there, they announced they were now accepting Apple Pay. They also had everything on my grocery list, and weren't filled with "people of WalMart."

Buhbye WalMart.
