3) It tokenizes the transaction.

Name one mobile payment system that does not use tokenization. When ever I hear someone say Apple pay uses tokens, I'm reminded by a scene in the movie Idiocracy, "its got electrolytes".

It's been over a year since Apple pay has been out. It is officially a failure now. It joins the ranks of Apple Ping, mobile me, Apple TV.

still dont get it, what is so awesome about apple pay? I am using nfc debit/credit cards for years, why should I tap phone instead of card near the reader? where is the benefit?

#1 - Fingerprint scanner is probably more secure
#2 - One time tokens (not sure if NFC cards do the same thing or not... this means that if someone else wirelessly picks up the token you use, it's worthless for them. In contrast, if you steal the numbers off of someone's CC, they can be used again and again for years).
#3 - Fewer things to carry around. If all of your cards are digitized and cash is a thing of the past, you don't need your wallet at all anymore. Right now, I've consolidated down to a walletcase for my iPhone with just two card slots. One slot has my driver's license. The other has my credit card. Once my state allows digital drivers licenses, I can probably safely get rid of the case and make all my trips out of my house with nothing but my iPhone.

Why not allow Apple Pay in the Walmart app like Apple and Starbucks does? Hell I would be happy with this! You scan the Walmart pay thing and then Apple Pay the purchase in the app.

Seems like people love the idea!

When some retail says "we don't support Apple Pay" are they basically saying "we don't support the standard NFC payment system"?

I confess myself rather confused about the difference between Apple / Google / Samsung pay etc

I assumed "apple pay" was just an Apple branded version of the same old NFC tech that google wallet was using years ago?
I believe, and I may be wrong, but if they support Apple Pay, you don't have to put in your pin number. If they don't support it, it will take your credit card, but you have to go the next step and type in your pin. That's all.

Why Walmart? I'd rather use my integrated system, Apple Pay.

If its anything like the products they sell, I bet it will be hacked within a day or so.

Just support both and let consumers decide!
I agree. Competition always benefits the consumer.

Although it's rather typical, I am surprised at how much fear and insecurity this has caused here in the Apple community. As successful as the Cupertino Co is, there's no need for jealousy and pushback like we're seeing here.

Because you're about 0.0001% of the populous that signed on for "tap" cards when they were available. Unlike the billions of people who did not. What is awesome about apple pay is that you can tap your phone, like you do your card, only you don't need to fumble about your wallet to find the card you want to use. there's no app to open, no pay section to go to. in fact if you tap your phone while your finger is on the home button the payment is completed as your device gets close to the machine. its awesome.

And for apple watch owners like me, i don't even need to take out my phone.

I think I speak for everyone when I say FINALLY. Can't wait for Safeways, Targets, Best Buys, Kohls, Nordstroms, Dicks Sporting Goods....etc to release theirs!

Some people have less money than you.

No, this is complete and total nonsense. Kroger or whatever better store is NOT so much more expensive that Walmart is the only option. Even thinking that way shows how out of touch you are with the reality of pricing.

They can come out with whatever want I won't use any of them. The only reason I use AP is for the very simple convenience of it. If they don't do AP I'll just do as I do now and pull out the card or cash and carry on.

But why..?

It's simple really. Money. Why pay apple their.... 30% ????.... or whatever it is to accept applepay when they can work a deal with visa/mastercard for lower rates using their own app.
I still say Starbucks did it the right way. They promoted their gift cards as not only gift cards, but cards that ANYONE could use.... and people do it. So instead of paying a credit card fee on every transaction, they only pay on the initial loads.

Garbage.

Oh, and a "good job" to Walmart for also using Helvetica Neue for the word "pay" - exactly like Apple.

Wish CurrentC would just die already.

The "Pay" in "Walmart Pay" is not written in Helvetica Neue. The tail on the lowercase "a" does not curve sharply to the right at the very bottom, and the tail on the lowercase "y" has a gradual acceleration in left slope rather than a normal slope and sharp left on the terminal as you find in Helvetica. :)

As for Walmart Pay itself, this seems like a weird idea to me. QR codes may be useful as a backup in case your phone doesn't support NFC or something similar, but needing to use it every time when there are other systems in existence, most of which are easier to use, seems odd to me. They're probably trying to save themselves from any fees the other system may charge them to use.

Must not let Apple gain power. Must destroy through fear, uncertainty and doubt. We like the status quo. Revenue good no change needed. Kill ApplePay.

Because unless you have my thumb you cannot pay using my phone, I can (depending on amount) use your card if I find it in the street.
Just because you have Apple Pay, you don't keep your card at home. Do you? Because you know that at some places it might not work and you have to swipe/tap your card. So in that case, if you lose your card, Apple Pay is not helping you much, is it?

SCREW YOU WALMART! YOU'RE NOT GETTING MY DATA!
What data are you talking about??? Coming from retail management software company, I will tell you this: retailers are least interested in your credit card information. All they want is your name and the hinge you bought.

The fact is that companies like Walmart saw how successful Starbucks was with their own similar (barcode-based) app and figure, "why not us too?" Having your customers use your own app to pay for purchases means that you still get to keep all the analytics/user tracking that you've been getting from people swiping their cards while possibly making for a faster checkout experience, basically a win-win. Like I've been saying since the whole CurrentC thing became a thing, it was never about the swipe fees at all.

On the other hand, I've been seeing some Walmart locations begin to show up on MasterCard's site. Attached is for the LA area but random ZIP codes around the country cause at least a few Walmart locations to appear. Perhaps they're going to enable NFC soon as well?

I use the Starbucks app (or the barcode in Apple Wallet) to pay because they have a generous rewards program (basically a free drink every 12 purchases, which translates to about 8.5% cash back assuming you always buy the same drink). Is there anything comparable in this Walmart Pay? The benefits for Walmart are clear (they get to track your purchase history and may avoid banking fees depending on what payment type is used), but what are the customer benefits?

To all the people saying scanning barcodes is too cumbersome, I really don't think it's a big deal. The Starbucks app works similarly (although they scan your code instead of the other way around) and it has never bothered me.
