How can a store not accept a card payment? Where I live Apple Pay was automatically compatible with all card readers the moment it became available, with no possible exceptions, since it uses the same technology as Visa and Mastercard. A shop can't just refuse ApplePay unless they also refuse all cards that your Apple Pay is "emulating". If you have a Visa card linked to your Apple Pay account, then the card reader sees a regular Visa card, it doesn't know it's Apple Pay.
Replace “ApplePay” with “Tap to pay” then you’ll understand why it doesn’t work

I try to avoid Walmart but not for this reason. I don't want to support a corporation that underpays their employees to artificially keep their prices lower than their competitors, and then their employees have to supplement their pay on government assistance in order to survive. Full time positions should be readily available, part-time jobs should be regulated (and not used as a loop-hole to screw over employees), and anyone working a full time job should be able to pay their rent and bills w/o being on government assistance.

Walmart is a trash company that is damaging to the USA. Don't shop there.

Who cares!?! Wal-Mart pay is super easy and we scan while in the store … scan the QR code in the checkout line and walk out.

What’s so hard about using an NFC debit / credit card if it doesn’t accent Apple another mobile payment?

People say.. that want your info… umm just like this site makes you sign in to comment…. They want your info. I also fuel up on diesel and scan the QR code to pay. I save .10 per gallon and it’s easy to pay.
Just to be clear, you scan the qr code of what? You open the app? Or there is a qr code you scan with your camera with no need to open the app?

Merchants don’t get charged for Apple Pay, they get charged the same amount by the card companies whether you use Apple Pay or the card itself. Card companies are charged a small fee if you use Apple Pay

Walmart doesn’t pay the same percentage fee that 97% of businesses pay

They are the largest company in the world by revenue ($685 billion) and therefore are able to negotiate much lower interchange fee rates than typical businesses pay

The typical credit card fee structure assessed on most businesses (that doesn’t differentiate Apple Pay percentage from a regular credit card percentage) does not apply to companies that have hundreds of billions in revenue

As much as I’m not a big fan of Walmart, their store, their rules.

As long as sales aren’t meaningfully impacted by the lack of Apple Pay, that won’t change.

I'm sorry, but is it REALLY that big of a deal? It seems like people enjoy complaining about trivial things. I have my iPhone and Apple Watch on me at all times, and I use them wherever Apple Pay is accepted. But I also carry my wallet with me, because I have my driver's license in there, my credit cards, and sometimes cash (but not usually). If I'm leaving the house, I have my physical wallet. If a place doesn't accept Apple Pay, I use my credit card. It's not the end of my world. I'm not inconvenienced. I don't get all the fuss.

Most of the sit-down restaurants I go to don't take Apple Pay either. Especially mom and pop shops. They bring me the check, I throw my CC in there, and they bring it back.

Seriously, is this the hill that ya'll are going to die on?

There's no technical difference between a regular bank card and Apple Pay as far as the card reader is concerned.

They accept chip or their app. NFC is disabled on all their terminals, so they don't accept tap from any cards or phones.

It's been several years since I shopped at Walmart, but not because of this. I don't really care if I put a card in or tap my phone.

Walmart employees are a significant user of Food Stamps yet work 40+hours. Sam Walton continued to drive his old truck and live in his modest home. That modesty did NOT rub off on the rest of the family,

One would not be surprised to see each family member's super yacht and personal jet let alone exotic cars.....

Walmart hates Visa and MasterCard and don't want to pay *any* interchange fees, it's not about any beef with Apple.

They also order their payment terminals with all NFC hardware removed, so they can't just flip a switch the way Home Depot did.

Toyota did the same thing with CarPlay. They were 100% committed at the most senior VP level to "Never lose control of the Entertainment Stack".

Then market research determined people literally made buying decisions on CarPlay (and assumedly Android Auto) support. In other words Toyota was losing a Statistically significant, measurable number of $50K automobile sales because of this corporate policy.

The policy changed. I suspect more than one person lost their job. Although probably not the megalomaniac that had this brilliant plan.

Walmart will not change this policy until they can measure a loss of revenue. As long as 70% of the people use the app and complain, and 30% of the people stick their card in the slot -- Walmart DOES NOT CARE!

They are an amoral corporation that exists to turn your wants and needs into stock dividends. If you buy from Walmart you are the problem not them.

You do realize that the card you put in Walmart Pay still uses the Visa/Mastercard networks

They don't accept Apple Pay in Mexico either. So embarrassing last time I went. I had everything scanned at the self check out already and then I had to leave everything cuz I never ever take a physical card with me anymore.
LOL. I know people just want to walk through the world waving their phone at everything but it doesn't always work like that.

They encourage you to like into your bank account for a fee-free ACH transfer, or at least they used to.

Target's RedCard does it too, via app or actual card, but at least they give you 5% off when using it. Target also supports Apple Pay.

Apple throws their weight around in their own store (App Store), so seeing another big beast do the same will be like looking in the mirror

I don't have a wallet. My driver's license is stored in the car and I am not obligated to carry an ID in my country.

As a Canadian, it's weird to read articles like this.
^ THIS.

We visited Glacier National Park in Montana, and then Banff, Canada in 2018. While in Canada I used Apple Pay entirely for 3 days except for one transaction (I cannot remember why that one transaction was unique). I even paid for fuel at the pump. It was other-worldly to me at the time. We get on the plane and return to the US and I could only use Apple Pay in 3 stores I shop at. And it's only marginally budged since then. The US card network and rules are entirely stone-age IMO.

I shop for certain things at Walmart all the time as they are cheaper than the grocery stores around me. It is inconvenient that they don't support Apple Pay.

I became the biggest  Pay snob after the pandemic. The only places that I know of that don't take Apple Pay are...
  • Walmart
  • Amazon Fresh
  • Hobby Lobby
Now, speaking of Walmart Pay, the one time I tried it when it first launched ca. 2017 and it glitched (no receipt!). The store gave me a hassle leaving so they had to go in the back to get a printer paper copy. Never used it again, wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Meanwhile...
  • Target
  • Costco
  • Smart & Final
  • Nearly every grocery store
.... Pay works perfectly!

Walmart Pay encourages people to just attach their bank accounts to do EFTs, which are much lower cost.
