I have the Walmart app and its so clunky to open the app and scan the qr code to pay. I’ve used it a few times and stopped after it was too annoying.

How can a store not accept a card payment? Where I live Apple Pay was automatically compatible with all card readers the moment it became available, with no possible exceptions, since it uses the same technology as Visa and Mastercard. A shop can't just refuse ApplePay unless they also refuse all cards that your Apple Pay is "emulating". If you have a Visa card linked to your Apple Pay account, then the card reader sees a regular Visa card, it doesn't know it's Apple Pay. There's no technical difference between a regular bank card and Apple Pay as far as the card reader is concerned.

In USA, businesses that take card payment have the option to turn off contactless payment and tap to pay on their card readers.

Walmart stores in the USA have the market mechanisms to stay in business despite not allowing tap-to-pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay.

Why?

It is the largest company in the USA with extremely high revenue.

It also has a large and loyal customer base that values low prices, making it unlikely to go out of business—even as the last major retailer to resist adopting a payment method used by all other major retailers in the country.

So, the only real consequence is that Walmart employees will continue dealing with complaints about the lack of tap-to-pay for many years to come, due to an unpopular corporate decision.

They also have a monopoly in the grocery business in many parts of the US.

There most likely still fees even with things like red card.

No, the RedCard does an ACH transfer from your checking or savings account. No transaction fees.

Unless there are inter-bank fees associated with ACH transfers, which I'm not sure about.

How prevalent is contactless payment in retails/food chains/restaurants etc. I know US always lagged behind compared to Europe/Canada. Wondering if it finally caught up.

I left a cart of groceries at the self checkout recently. I hardly go there, and there's usually a Target nearby which has the same stuff without the butt cracks and barely clothed kids staring at you.

Funny I use my Apple Watch at at Walmart every week. I just select my bank visa and it works. Same at Costco. I think it’s more to with Mastercard than Apple

Something isn’t adding up here. There is no way to tap to pay at an American Walmart. What are you talking about?

Walmart is a great place for personal well-being, not because you can find high-quality products, but because you can simply put on a nice outfit and stroll around for a while. Compared to the average shopper there, you feel like you’re on top of the world! You’re doing great! Now, get out quickly!

It is the lack of tap to pay in any form (not just Apple Pay) that sucks the most here. Just follows in the tracks of Byzantine payment systems in the US. Don’t even get me started on magstrip and taking my credit card to pay after a meal.

I live in Canada.

Maybe, some USA businesses are still using these things for card payments.

Yes, but they also don't want to pay the merchant fees that Apple requires for Apple Pay.
Does Apple charge fee from Walmart? If I am using a card, the merchant need to pay a certain percentage to the payment provider. It varies from firm to firm. I am sure that a large company like Walmart pays much less than a sole entrepreneur.
When I am paying with iPhone, it is just a card payment. It only reflects my card. If it is a credit card, card reader provider takes higher rates. That’s it. For Walmart it doesn’t matter.

Fail to move with the times and you get left behind. It may be that in a decade there is no Walmart because they just refused to evolve with customer demand.

I do not like the Walmart shopping experience, but, product prices are usually quite lower than competition (eg grocery stores, let's say a bottle of ketchup for example).
They don't offer Apple Pay as they want all the shopper's data ...
and it's obvious by now they do not care about customer complaints

Has anyone used Apple Pay at Amazon?

not happening, the majority of customers takes the savings over this piece of convenience ...

The Walmart App is actually pretty decent. And they are completely remodeling my neighborhood store which is only a few blocks away and the one by my office is already remodeled and it's very nice. I do avoid the superstores.

Do you not carry ANY credit cards with you at any time? I don't carry EVERY single credit card that I own, but I at least have my AMEX and a Chase VISA for when I need to use a CC where Apple Pay is not accepted.

I'm sorry, but is it REALLY that big of a deal? It seems like people enjoy complaining about trivial things. I have my iPhone and Apple Watch on me at all times, and I use them wherever Apple Pay is accepted. But I also carry my wallet with me, because I have my driver's license in there, my credit cards, and sometimes cash (but not usually). If I'm leaving the house, I have my physical wallet. If a place doesn't accept Apple Pay, I use my credit card. It's not the end of my world. I'm not inconvenienced. I don't get all the fuss.

Most of the sit-down restaurants I go to don't take Apple Pay either. Especially mom and pop shops. They bring me the check, I throw my CC in there, and they bring it back.

Seriously, is this the hill that ya'll are going to die on?
It's not a huge deal, and it doesn't keep me from shopping at Walmart.

But it's a needless inconvenience that generates bad vibes when you have to pull out your wallet and card at only ONE store. And they're being stubborn about it for a really stupid reason; if they want people to use the Walmart app, give them incentives to use it, IE, use a carrot, not the stick of banning tap to pay.

I will never, EVER install Walmart Pay as long as they have tap to pay blocked. It's a matter of principle. I still shop there though because I'm not willing to inconvenience myself that much over something that minor.

This is one big reason why I will go to Target or another retailer before I go to Walmart. I think they’re too big to fail and maybe they’re right but that doesn’t mean I have to shop there.

Walmart principles are making money and as long as you help that they’re fine with you not using Walmart pay. Unfortunately, this is the attitude of most customers where they will complain about something, but won’t actually do anything meaningful to make a change. Walmart knows this so they have no reason to accept Apple Pay.

It needs to be said that you still can't generally get NFC on a phone that lists for under $200. And it makes sense for a lot of people going to this budget-minded retailer have budget-priced phones. So they don't even notice, because they don't tap-to-pay anywhere else, either. I didn't have working NFC myself until around last Christmas, and I actually still don't use it often. Most often in the line at Aldi.

Do people who say they refuse to shop at places where they can't tap to pay, just not even use drive-up pharmacy windows? I've been to a few, and none seem to have a reader small enough to fit in the drawer. And do people who refuse to use barcodes in apps to pay, never use the line at Starbucks or other restaurants, only ordering through the apps for pick up?

P.S. I used to say that I don't shop at Walmart because of the labor issues. But Amazon probably has worse labor issues, and I still rely on them sometimes. Maybe, really, it's just because the superstores are so depressing and crowded?

Never seen any stats but I can’t imagine the number of new customers on Walmart pay as a result of not offering Apple Pay is very high. It just annoys me. But I’m not gonna sign up or use yet another service.
