I've owned the Galaxy Tab 10.1, the Toshiba Thrive and the Motorola Xoom. Of the three, the Thrive seemed to strike the best balance of hardware and software. I had a lot of issues with flash on the Galaxy.
They're all garbage compared to the iPad. I really wanted to like Android because the interface is really gorgeous. But underneath all that beauty lies a wretched relentless hag who's become slow, fat and tiresome.
Every day he turns it on, that hag will remind him how much you dislike him for buying this POS.

Goodbye marriage.....

FLASH *is* supported by a couple of third party browsers.

I do not know how good it is at doing it. Flash is extremely demanding and sucks power with a fire hose.

Can't recall the name ATM....

From what I know, even if you use the Flash work arounds, it is a real PITA. Or is that incorrect?
I'd like to get him an iPad, however, like I said before, flash is a MUST for him...and I'd really rather a tablet than a lap top because I'm thinking it's less stuff to break in the shop LOL

No, I'm not getting him an iPad for a couple of reasons....one, he's not an :apple: fan like I am :p ...and he NEEDS to be able to access Flash without a hassle. He does a lot of web based training and stuff, and it seems most of it is flash based.

All of the media servers in the marketplace are serving up streams to iOS devices with open standards today -- even Adobe's.

There are several indirect solutions for handling Flash on the iPad. Someone mentioned the Kindle Fire -- that will probably be rendering the Flash on Amazon's servers and sending the digested stream to the device: very similar to what the third-party solutions on iPad are doing.

What say thee?

I would try devices in the store with him. Takes away the surprise, but increases the odds of satisfaction.

If flash is an absolute requirement I would just get him a laptop like you were thinking...flash performance on mobile devices that can support it is generally terrible, but that's just what I've heard- can anyone back me up on this ?

Words of wisdom. Even tablets that "play flash" often do so in a very limited way. If you husband is doing presentations and needs to use a lot of multi media, I would strongly suggest an laptop (perhaps the $999 Air to keep the fun factor). I have an Ipad and love it. I use it for business and fun every day. But unless I'm rarely use it for presentations, unless its slides only.

I saw you asked about the Toshiba Thrive. I can't attest for everyone, but my experience was lackluster. I actually bought it before the iPad and ended up taking it back the next day. The problem? It would not, by any means and troubleshooting, connect to the wi-fi here at my apartment complex. I've read and others also had the problem. Doesn't mean it's a definite thing for everyone though. It's a beautiful device otherwise. A bit hefty in size (not so much in weight) but comes with convenient expandable storage in the form of USB, SD, and micro USB ports.

That being said I understand that the iPad is out. My suggestion would be the Galaxy as well. I'd personally avoid the Xoom but that's only because of the weight of it. It was noticeably heavier than other Android tablets I played with at Best Buy. I imagine if he'll be using at work like you said, you'd want something lighter. :) Good luck!

i've got to view flash. iswifter (app) works well. it is not a pain. give it a try.

buying gadgets for guys is like buying shoes for girls. unless you know exactly what he wants, it is generally a bad idea.

some people you would think would like tablets hate them, even the ipad. weird, but true.

Incorrect. Just download the appropriate browser and you're good to go.

All I can say it DO NOT buy him a Blackberry PlayBook.. that thing is absolutely horrendous

How can you say that? Have you ever owned a Playbook? Native email and calendar aside (I already have those on my iPhone 4-oh and they're coming to the Playbook soon) it's a great portable:

- Flash works flawlessly
- Can synch with a Mac and your iTunes media
- Hdmi output
- More portable
- One finger swipe, bezel navigation is a pleasure to use
- Very well made like an iPad but on a smaller format.

Now at $200 off, it's even more attractive!

Yes, I have an iPad but using my Playbook more for some reason. And yes, I am an avid Mac user and glad to have had the opportunity to own an alternative tablet.

i wouldn't rule out an ipad even though flash support via 3rd party apps is iffy, depends in the website.

a laptop might be a good alternative. what, if anything, is he using currently to view the traiing stuff?

Whatever benefits the Playbook might have, I wouldn't recommend that anyone invest in it right now, because RIM is on very, very shaky ground. Android, that ought to be OK. Apple, you know that will be supported. But, anything else at this point is quite a gamble.

Absolutely hilarious!
And so true...

You make it sound like RIM will just collapse and die tomorrow. Whatever bad press they got, they're still a big corporation with lots of user base and the Playbook seems to be on their agenda to improve in the coming months (just find out about the past developer conference they just had). Also, FORBES is predicting a positive outlook for RIM after the conference:

I'm not a Blackberry loyalist. In fact, the Playbook is my only RIM product amidst my countless Mac ones. I'm just here to relay what I experienced with it and to me it is truly a tablet worth competing with the iPad. Tried the Android ones out there but I keep coming back to the Playbook.

I've shrugged off the Playbook before. Gave it a chance as soon as the $200 off deal was put on the table... I never looked back.

Flash Sucks

Flash Sucks on all tablets, i would stick with your original idea of a laptop. Those online training courses would be hell for him on a tablet.....

Wait a little for the Asus Transformer Prime to come out. Best of both worlds, tablet, laptop, runs flash, etc..

I have a Transformer (original) and I like it, other than I don't like Android much.

If your buying now either the Galaxy Tab 10.1 or 8.9 depending on his size preference. If you can wait until closer to the holidays wait of the Transformer Prime. I will be packing the new nvidia quad core Tegra that should improve performance dramatically. Considering he will be using flash a lot and flash is very processor intensive it would be my strong recommendation to wait for it. If you do make sure you keep up with the release date and order it first thing when it's available as it will be a hot commodity and hard to come by. The first one was about as bad as trying to find a new iPad when they are released. They don't sell nearly as many but supply is a lot more limited. The Transformer also makes a lot better notebook replacement with the keyboard attachment that also boosts battery life dramatically. For his use I think he would be very happy with that set-up. You are wise not to try and force an iPad on him. It doesn't suite his needs the best. While you and I prefer the iPad it doesn't fit for him.

P.S.
I need to get you to talk to my wife, I need to get her to buy me gadgets!

Right now just on our family computer, or on the oldest's laptop at the moment because she got it taken away LOL

I have my MacBook pro, and NO ONE is allowed on it. :p We have a desktop family computer (an aging Dell that is dying a slow and painful death), and we have three teenagers- so until the girl got her lap top, it was 4 people vying for time on one computer...now it's 3, and some days are still touchy, so I thought getting him something of his own would ease that a bit... and I'm hoping next year to buy a new Mac mini for the family:D

Does he NEED a tablet? nope. But I know he'd enjoy it, and it would make life a little easier for him. He does like the iPad, I just don't want to end up giving him something that's going to be more of a pain in the butt than it will be useful for him.

I want to like RIM, because I liked their business model back in the day, but they are the walking dead, and their Playbook (again, not saying there is anything wrong with it) is going down with them. No way I am going to invest in an ecosystem that might not be around next year.

As for their stock, it really couldn't get any worse, so I will play along and say it might go up a bit next quarter. They shipped 200,000 tablets this year. 200,000! That is less than the number of pre-orders for the Amazon Fire. And, remember, that is shipped, not sold...

@OP
Give us a link to one of the sites he visits with Flash. We'll check it out with iSwifter or some other app and see if it displays. If it does, you are good to go. Frankly, I can't imagine anyone (including an Android fan) being disappointed with an iPad. It's just too cool.

I talked to hubby today a little about it and he seems to think that most of that stuff is java rather than flash, but neither of us are so great with knowing that stuff.

Obviously I can't get into the training stuff, but here we go:

No problem looking at this sites with Photon Web Browser. Only the Mazda web site required me to hit the Flash button for it to render properly.
