I take it back. I tried to open one of those training videos from Flat Rate Tech and I get a strange 'Firefox can not open this mms....' error code.

Tried workarounds, but it was not successful. Sorry.
aw such a bummer! That's what I've been afraid of.
If I have to go Android, I think I've narrowed it down to the Thrive or the Galaxy Tab, unless that Asus is really awesome and out before Christmas.

Thank you SO much for your help!!

If he works in a shop and you're worried about him breaking it, get a cheap laptop and not a fragile glass-front tablet. I can think of a dozen scenarios where that tablet could potentially get smashed, broken, dented, destroyed and rendered completely useless. Not to mention, a mechanics hands aren't going to very clean and, lord, trying to prop a tablet for display/viewing? holding it for customers or trying to position it so he can watch and work on a car simultaneously? no way. he's gonna want a tough laptop that doesn't need babysitting and can withstand the daily wear and tear of a shop.

I have one word for you: Otterbox. :D

I bought the asus transformer and loved it. It offered more bang for the buck and the screen is gorgeous ...better than the iPad IMHO . I liked the honeycomb operating system.

The only reason it went back is because I wanted more apps and I wanted them now, so I now have the iPad. I miss my beautiful interface and ability to customize but you couldn't pay me to give up my iPad. I tried out the Xoom, the galaxy, the thrive and the transformer. If you don't go apple I'd recommend the asus especially since you can add the keyboard.

To be honest, you are not likely to find the best advice on non-Apple products on this forum. But, the only Android tablet developed for business use is Lenovo's new Thinkpad Tablet. It looks good, comes with a stylus/pen, and has SD, USB, and HDMI slots. I will not say that it is better than an ipad, but it is an alternative tablet with different strengths.

for me? I'm not the one who works in a shop.
Besides, since when do otterboxes stand on their own?

I was simply addressing your concerns. Why so cranky?

That's how he keeps his iPhone safe at work, too. It works great.

And, Otterbox Defender DOES have a stand.

But, all that being said, I'm still uncertain. He mentioned today he really wanted a new Xbox and Kinnect, so I told him what I was thinking of, and now he is deciding which he'd rather have. :D

Seems like maybe it is possible.

If you are willing to risk it, I suggest get an iPad, load up the other 3ed party flash support, and let your hubby try his training programs.
If something does not work, get in contact with the app maker and see if they can fix.

At worst, return iPad. 30 days right?

And it seems you have a case already picked out. :p

I thought iPads had a 14 day. At least at Best Buy they do, not sure about Apple.com or Apple Retail (though I have a nagging suspicion that Apple follows the same deal). Come to think of it, I think I only had 14 days on my Mac Mini - I know this because a week after the 14 day period they released a new one and I was pissed.

Since Flash is a major requirement, do not buy him an iPad.

While it is correct that there are third party browsers, like Puffin and iSwifter, which handle Flash, it isn't as smooth as native Flash. My suggestion is to go to somewhere like Best Buy and try those training sites on the different tablets they have on dispay.

If flash is really that important you might just want to stick with a laptop.

Just tried on my Galaxy Tab, it won't work because the fies are windows media files, .wmv .

So you would need an app for iPad or an android tablet to run those videos.

The only advantage the android tab will have is playing flash videos that do not require keyboard and complicated mouse gestures.

Skyfire etc, will work for the iPad but imo, is laggy compared to the built in flash support on android tabs.

@OP,
I'm gonna say that an inexpensive laptop would be better for what you want. I have an air and would recommend that, but since your husband is a mechanic and I work on cars as a hobby, have messed up, dirtied up plenty of laptops in the garage. So a $1000+ laptop is not practical and would be ruined quickly.

Also consider that any tablet you get will get grease and oil all over it. Then it kind of defeats having the tablet also being used around the house. I would get a decent sub 500 laptop that he could use exclusively for work and you can share the iPad with him when you get it.

Hope that helps.

Heck no, I don't share my stuff with him...he always messes with my settings and crap and makes me mad!! So, NO iPad sharing here, baby!

He said last week how he wanted a new xbox and kinnect (ours is dying), and I told him there was NO WAY I could swing both a tablet/iPad AND an xbox, so he has to choose one or the other.

He told me today he'd rather the Xbox, and maybe a laptop/tablet/ipad later next year...I can deal with that. :p
