There are links to the firmware out there. You don't need to be tied tona developer account. I'm not and I was able to install just fine
Well it didnt work for me! Got the ipsw from usual sources for these things, option-restored and no luck, get the 'must be registered' message. Using itunes 10...for those that it worked for are you on iTunes 9 still?

or use itunes 9.2 and lower and get it with out paying 😛
EDIT: Guess it's maybe more than just 9.2 Not sure why some people can get it to work (me) and some can't.
i most concern that is how to downgrade or getting back to the iOS 3.2.2 ??

It's not 9.2, right now I have no idea as people who have gotten it like me either don't respond or I don't know what. But I've got nothing special, the link I sent you I just downloaded, option clicked in Ituned 9.2 and it verified. Some people it seems to some not. If it didn't for you, you could certainly try to downgrade to 9.2 or earlier... but I am not going to mess with my setting and risk not being able to do it again 😛
I'm on 9.2 here too and I just hit update and it went through the verification just fine even though I'm not registered anywhere with anyone. It's updating as we speak....

Maybe the trick is updating instead of wiping clean? I'm pretty sure Itunes 9.2 has something to do with it as well though.....
I'm tempted to go back and try to do a full wipe and install....but not sure if i want to push my luck at this point! HAHA
You guys are probably tired of me posting at this point, but some might find the updates useful. I got it up and running on 4.2 using the update method. Multitasking, folders, everything was great....but I'm OCD and like to start fresh on these types of things, so I am now restoring to a fresh 4.2 wipe and it didn't ask for the verification again.
So maybe if you're afraid a straight restore won't work, try to do an upgrade to the ipsw file first and then do a restore after it's back up and running.
Anyone else have any luck yet?
Well nevermind on that. DON'T DO A FULL RESTORE! THAT'S WHEN IT DENIES YOU!!! Now i have to figure out how to get it back working again :-/
Yea I'm currently waiting for 3.2 to download so I can attempt the downgrade. Thankfully I had my SHSH blobs backed up, so hopefully this will work.

4.2 is running nicely on my iPad. Folders finally - jesus christ... multitasking, gamecenter... 🙂
I had my iPad jailbroken, but there were hardly any JB features that I used... and for some weird reason, location services stopped working in google maps. My iPhone4 on the other hand - I couldn't use it non-jailbroken.

I paid a developer $5 for access to betas for year. Since found out that my friend at work is a developer and would have given me access for free. Duh.
Anyway, well worth the five bucks. I hated not having folders and no multitasking. Haven't run into any issues at all thus far.

I really think the biggest reason to jailbreak is to use the Full Force program to make non-iPad apps go full screen.
It's also worth noting that to even become a developer you are required to have a business license, and depending on your state, have the insurance that goes along with owning a business. There are a lot of devs out there that pay out the ass for such.
And, because that's the case, there are very few (intelligent and trustworthy) devs that would be stupid enough to violate not only the ToS Apple has in place, but also the fact that beta releases are privileged information, and are considered "secret." Not only will Apple instantly terminate any dev found doing this, but they also have legal grounds to sue that developer for leaking confidential information and software.
What are you talking about? You give uncle Steve $100 and he will give you an iOS developer membership. I bought one just for the betas. (although I screw around with development for fun.)
At such an affordable (relatively) price, many of us just paid for the Dev account for Betas and to tinker in Xcode... I don't use half the stuff they put out there as beta.
Moral of the story, OP is right. If you don't have your UDID registered, you can't install the betas until the GM is out in the wild.
That said, iOS 4.2 for iPad is a VERY welcomed update... I'm having some troubles with my WIFI though on my 3G model.
