9to5Mac seems to think it’s related to the back tap feature. I’m wondering how many people actually have that enabled?

Okay, so my 15PM has the beta downloaded and asking me when I want to install- now or tonight. I haven't hit either choice, just letting it sit there.
Is there a way of deleting the download at this point? I looked in the iPhone storage setting, but do not see the download there.

Looks like it’s a bug for people that use back tap.

If that is the case, very odd to say the least

I tried out that feature for a bit, found myself not really using it so I have since disabled it (this was back when I had one of the earlier phones to support in the XR)

I do (more accurately, did) on my 15. Super convenient for magnifier. Updated OTA with no issues, as least not yet. I did turn off Back Tap just now, just in case.

I have this feature disabled.. Guess that saved me from this mess. mine updated just fine.

“Only affects small number of users”™
Which seems to be true from what I've read on here; about half the comments I've seen are those that have been hit by the boot loop and then the other half saying it worked fine

If that 9to5Mac article is to be believed, sounds like making sure the back tap option is off before updating is your best bet to avoid the boot loop issue

Either way, one should still tread carefully when doing any kind of beta update, especially when it has the potential to wreak havoc like this one has

Turn off back tap and let it rip

Okay, I have backtap off... have never used it. Taking the chance and hit update now, but it didn't immediately go to verifying update, it seemed to download for a more seconds and is now Preparing Update, again. I wonder if they already changed the build number?

No idea why so many people are installing these. And apparently on their main devices. Unless you’re a developer or working in an IT dept I don’t see any reason, unless for it to go south and then complain about Apple losing it.
I participate in the public beta (typically released shortly after the developer beta, so I guess I'll be missing this particular bug) and I do indeed install it on my main iPhone... and only that one device. My take is pretty simple: playing with features before they are available to the general public can be fun. The important factor for me is, I don't do anything particularly critical with my iPhone; to me, it's little more than a very expensive toy. Thus, there's no real risk, to me... and I suspect similar sentiments could possibly be expressed about other commentators in this thread.

Thing is, you can't expect a geek to not... be a geek. We love playing with our betas, even when they crap out on us now and then. And perhaps it goes without saying that some of us also love being the first to discover (and of course, complain about) the latest bugs, while others love crowing about how they managed to avoid those same bugs... because in our geekdom, both commentaries are kind'a like different forms of bragging rights.

And if you don't want that for yourself, that's fine too; to each their own. Just understand that your criticisms are likely to fall largely on deaf ears.

Major bugs from Apple that are functionally equivalent to Malware, but alternative app stores are the big risk?
How many would even use Back Tap? Even then the spinning ball doesn't happen to everyone even with that enabled. BTW this is still a Dev beta (yeah not a public beta yet) so some things were fixed from beta 1, like the beta 2 "Reset all settings" now mandates use of Face ID.
