So it is mandatory to now own a computer if you wish to have a functioning iPhone. Talk about up selling BS
They will present this in their next keynote. We've seen "new" iPhone users purchasing a Mac(book) at the same time as they love our product so much.

I cannot get cellular service to transfer, it keeps telling me to update my phone. Both are updated as much as they can Xr (17.0.1), and 15 (17.0.2).
Exact same thing is happening with me 🤬🤬 I've got AT&T. I downloaded update just like it asked me to, and when it comes time to transfer number, it shows up to ask permission on other phone, and confirm on new one. I do all that and keep getting error.

So dang frustrating.

Got mine up and going perfectly. I have a problem with my voicemail. I enter my password and then reenter it and I’m getting an error message yet I call it and put in the password and it works fine! Anybody expecting this or have experienced this?

Cmon getting issues due to this. UPdate failed and now I'm stuck on the apple id code verification.

I set up as new and haven’t had any issues. I’m off work for the rest of the weekend, so I’ll sign into my apps a little a time. Transferring eSims from my 14PM to my 15PM was painless compared to last year. I’m going to try this method every year.

My iPhone 15 Pro is only running 17.0.1 and I don't see a 17.0.2 update. It's sad that Apple has stopped supporting it after only two years!

I performed the security update that was prompted. After it finished, the phone restarted in black and white. Tried shutting down and turning back on. Black and white. Force restarted. Black and white 😭. Restoring it in DFU mode via my MacBook and praying this is not a hardware issue with the display 💀
Update! DFU restore fixed it. All set up from an iCloud restore. Everything is perfect so far. 🤗

This article is actually confusing the issue by burying the lede. During initial setup, users will be prompted to update to iOS 17.0.2 (see the image in the tweet embedded in the article). The important thing is simply to NOT skip that update if you're planning to transfer settings/apps from another phone later in the process.

TLDR -- During setup, make sure you press "Update Now" instead of "Update Later."
Thank you! I was wondering how to bypass initial setup to install the update.

I'm a fan of setting up new iPhones as new phones, and just signing into iCloud but not restore from backup. I've had issues with my backup it uses being corrupted and things being weird and not working right on the new phone.

That’s exactly why I always set up as new. I don’t mind re-signing into all of my apps again.

I always enjoy setting up each new iPhone as a brand new device. It gets a little tedious with Apple Pay but I love doing the rest manually… deciding which apps stay etc

I do that every year, and keep the apps and bookmarks saved to my Home Screen. If I don’t have no use of the app, it will not be downloaded onto my iPhone. I had errands to run yesterday, so it took the whole day to redownload those apps and sign into some of them. I even downloaded them according to my 14PM Home Screen layout, so that I wouldn’t have to move them to different screens. It saved me a lot of time.

Epic fail indeed. I DID update the new phone and it hung anyhow. Then on the second try with old phone next to it, I got to the ATT setup, which succeeded, and then the update hung again at "Location Services". Luckily O had backed up the old phone to my computer and the "restore" function worked just fine.

Never transfer from iPhone, always restore from backup or else you're phoneless for hours.
I always transfer from the older phone.
And I have multiple backups (on my MB Pro) using finder and iMazing

Is it necessary to update an iPhone 12PM from iOS16 to iOS17 before transferring data to a new iPhone 15PM running iOS17?

I picked up my phone, and I was trading in (after an hour wait for someone to do the booked trade in) I had do the transfer there, particular as I had an esim to transfer.
All went well, until the prompt to setup the phone prompted the options to; restore backup or transfer from phone, I selected iCloud backup, then hit continue, which then prompted the iOS update, which I selected 'update now', and then sat their for 20 mins, before attracting the attention of an apple employee, who hooked up my phone to a MBS, and had to restore and update, and then the process of 'recovering data', around 30 mins later, I have a phone that I could setup. The setup took 10mins for the iCloud backup. Time to do eSim transfer! Oh no, O2, and EE can't do this, you have to get a physical piece of paper, to rescan a new qr code. 45 min walk to the nearest shop, before phone was 'working'. 3 hours of my day wasted.

But that is "progress". Regent Street?

15 PM. Updated automagically. Now waiting for data to be transferred (6 more hours for 600 gb)

And it’s faster too! To do it manually, otherwise it takes ages!
