OMG, people are warned that they need to apply a software update before a data transfer can be made and they start complaining. Like, what's the problem with reading instructions and applying an update?

Why people have to complain for this? I bet if there were no updates to prevent data transfer issues and people wouldn't be that noisy.

That's cool you worked so closely with Scott Forstall to know he only made one mistake. Also, it seems to have had more to do with him being unapologetic. Everybody makes mistakes, some huge. What matters is how you handle them and from the information that was available at the time, it seems Forstall handled it poorly.
That's cool that you worked so close to him too

Ok I have an iPhone X (physical sim)going to a 15 Pro Max.
Whats goin to be the best way to setup the 15?

Guess I’ll try and let it do the esim setup and the. Setup as new, erase the phone and then do a transfer
Will that work or will that delete the esim?
Wonder if I can activate later, setup as new update and the do the activation and thr. Copy from X to 15

Why couldn't they do this via one of those emergency quick fix thingies?

No one wants to buy a new car and head straight to the mechanic before even going home.

I was warned and prompted to upgrade during my initial setup

I’ve never been able to get the transfer from old iPhone to work.
I did update to 17.0.2 first thing but the transfer estimate was 7 hours. 😩
So I cancelled which caused a reset then restored from iCloud.
Smooth as silk.

Mine was running hot 🥵 to the point it paused downloads but he seems better now.

My phone is stuck trying to update smh, im going to try to do from iCloud or setup as new and go from there, last year we had an issue as well this isn't okay...

Weird, I don't remember that in my post. But I did read a lot about it at the time. Fortunately since it's the Internet and everything, you can find all the same articles inferring Forstall's dismissal had more to do with being unapologetic than for making mistakes. But it's definitely easier to go with the playground quip, unoriginal though it may be.

Mine updated during transfer, but:

Pairing the devices took a couple of restarts, switching off BT and so on. Worked only after quite some time.

Transfer was announced as taking up 15 Minutes and needed 40.

About 1/4 of my Apps did not transfer, got the «offloaded to iCloud» cloud next to them (despite the fact that this feature is deactivated) and had to reinstall these apps manually.

Watch Faces weren‘t available at first.

iBooks still does not show the cover of the current book in the widget.

And of course, but this is not on Apple, all banking apps are a nightmare to re-authenticate.

Small stuff, but taking up the day and annoying.

On the other hand, eSIM and Watch activation worked perfectly smooth and about 70% of the installation was easier than ever. Very nice work (despite the bugs)

Sounds weird. I had none of these issues. My transfer started at 3 days and took < 2hrs. Everything was a breeze.

The update of IOS17 was smooth and quick. It was keyed on when I started to restore from iCloud backup. DAT transferred smoothly and quick. How moving to eSIM failed several times. I think the problem was the age of the physical SIM card in my iPhone 12. A call to AT&T and the issue was resolved (800-331-0500). Tech support did it manually on there end the I ran the move eSIM and all was fine.

I cannot get cellular service to transfer, it keeps telling me to update my phone. Both are updated as much as they can Xr (17.0.1), and 15 (17.0.2).

I'm not sure how this is an 'epic fail' as many are saying. I own any number of machines (computers, gaming consoles, etc.) that **REQUIRE** updating to the latest OS/SW version before using them. At least this one is actually fixing an issue.
This.

Turned on new phone, scaned my old iphone X, then it asked me to update, did that and it setup fine except for the transfer number. I had to call FirstNet to get that done but seems to be working

Apple really hasn’t cared about software quality for years now. Craig Federighi is more interested in clowning around than he is producing good quality software. Bring back Scott Forstall.

"Day 1 update" seems to be something that is "industry practice" at this point.
They've been selling BETA products for years. They know way ahead what they want to release yet they provide you with an OS that promises new features that won't get released until they next hardware is lurking around the corner.

I performed the security update that was prompted. After it finished, the phone restarted in black and white. Tried shutting down and turning back on. Black and white. Force restarted. Black and white 😭. Restoring it in DFU mode via my MacBook and praying this is not a hardware issue with the display 💀
