Did they say what it was that caused it?
He didn't say. All he said was that it was clearly not my fault. I guess based on the fact that there were literally no scratches or chips or anything. Just the bend. As if it came like that, which it didn't.

Imagine how hot it would have to get to actually torque the frame. I went to engineering school as I imagine many readers here have, took a bevy of mechanical aspect classes. I am scratching my head.

OP, I believe you as evidently Apple did. The only thing I can come up with to explain how your iPad mini bent as it did is if it was squeezed lengthwise, such as in a vice tightened slowly so as to not abruptly crack it.

Can anyone else come up with anything more plausible? Again, this isn't a bash OP, I believe him/her. I am trying to CSI it, I guess.
I understand. To be honest I'm just as confused as you are. It was fine the day before, then the next day I noticed the Smart Cover wasn't sitting properly...

horrendous bend, how could it pass QC at MFG?

Still, could have slipped though.

It was perfectly fine out of the box. I got it on launch day and it was fine up until the day before yesterday. I certainly would have noticed it right away if it was like that out of the box.

It was likley sat on after purchase. No way you could even get the case on it if it came out of the box with that much of a bend.

Sorry but I claim BS.

We'll I know for a fact I didn't sit on it. And I also know for a fact that it was fine the day before yesterday. Im thinking extreme heat in either it's surroundings or inside the iPad itself. I'm not an engineer so I could be totally off base. But I'm not as naive to have sat on it and then say I did nothing.

An Apple store employee wouldn't look at a bent iPad and say "Oh yeah, for sure, that's not your fault; iPads bend by themselves all the time!"

And the naive thing would have been to sit on it and then say you sat on it.

Look, we don't work for Apple, we're not going to turn you in. If you got away with something, fine. No use in hiding from it.

Well all I'm trying to say is I didn't "get away" with anything. You can believe me or not it really does not matter to me. As I said earlier, he must have noticed that there were no signs of actual damage on the device (i.e. scratches, dings etc) to conclude that it was not my fault. Just because you believe no Apple store employee would say that doesn't mean none will.

fify ;)

So you clearly don't get what I'm saying but that's perfectly fine as you're entitled to your own opinions. Just don't assume someone is lying when you have no first hand evidence of it, that's all.

Wow... Sorry about the s*** you are getting on here... Only thing I can think that might have caused this, is the battery. Glad you got it fixed easily and if I were you, I'd just let this thread die.

It's sad you have to defend yourself on something you're just being honest about. If it exploded in your face and you had pics of the exploded iPad and your face all beat up, they'd probably blame you for holding it wrong. Yes, there is always a chance that someone on the internet is lying but I don't see any reason for you to be doing this.

Happy Holidays! :D

Thanks for the support! And I agree I should just let it die, it's my mistake for defending something that doesn't need any defending. Happy holidays to you too!

I'm sorry man.

I should be like the Apple store employee and assume that a bent iPad just happens spontaneously.

Seriously, I'm not an Apple employee, have no experience in fabricating iPads, and I'm just a regular guy who buys Apple products once in a while. In other words, I have no experience or expertise to determine it one way or the other.

I need to just accept the fact that iPads bend by themselves. Sorry about that.

A faulty battery can't bend a frame that way ....
It can deform the iPad in some way, for sure , but from the photos my first impression was "he inadvertently sat on it".

Btw if the apple's guy replaced it, then, you are lucky and good for you !

Another possibility is someone else has accidentally sat on it, or borrowed it and damaged it but not said anything to you?

Glad it's been all sorted out though :)

something happened to Apple's iOS device since they switched to the iPhone 5 design.
the aluminium seems to be more susceptible to bending.
I dont know about you guys, but I have an iPad 2 and that thing is a tank... I dont use any case but a smart cover, throw it around a suitcase, in a backpack, no bends...
My iPad 4 I treat a bit more carefully but still not babying it at all. Still fine.
same as my iPhone 4s

the iPhone 5, new ipod touch and the ipad mini, I keep seeing these devices bending on forums.

No way would sitting on an iPad do that.

The way the aluminum is machined, bathtub like with sides. Its going to resist bending. Id expect it to need excessive force and heat.

Just got back from the Apple store. The genius knew right away it wasn't my fault and replaced it right away. He was even nice enough to pull a brand new one off the shelf as they had no more replacement units. Still very strange as to how it even happened but satisfied nonetheless!

This is why Apple has such highly rated customer service.

No way ?
This is exactly what happen when you sit on an iPad ....

Actually what is missing is the backplate photo, but judging from what he posted it seems the most logic explanation ...

----------

Internal stresses in faulty batteries, nothing else. Move on.

Could be, but results usually are slightly different from what he posted.
A faulty battery usually somewhat "inflates" the device, doesn't bend ......

Stop it everyone!

The OP already told us it happened by itself!

Just accept the fact that iPads bend by themselves while they sit on your shelf at night.

Time to move on.
