It will be sometime in summer. Why did you even ask us if you were just going to defend your choice. If you like it and you won't have buyers remorse when the new iphone comes out reaalllyy soooon then don't post a thread here asking if it was the right decision. You should know what everyone will say, and if you don't (I'm sorry to say this but) you shouldn't even be on this forum. Good luck with whatever you decide to do, but try not to involve fellow macrumors people over something that only requires yourself to figure out. :nododgy:

Justin

Are you serious? Sorry if it bothers you that I have an opinion. If you think its a waste of time to read my thread and post in it, than don't.

It sounds to me like you made the right choice.

At the end of the day there will always be a new model around the corner, and we're talking about a phone here - hardly a lifelong commitment. So a new model may be released in June, perhaps with more storage space, perhaps with 3G, perhaps with GPS... I've had my iPhone for a few months now and I'll be excited to see what the upgrade brings, but I'll not be weeping over the fact that I didn't buy the current gen phone earlier.

Enjoy the phone (it's amazing, and that fact won't change in June) and don't feel you have to keep up with the few vocal tech-junkies who obsess over having the latest model of everything on day 1.

You see, the iPhone is "data centric" device. Take a look at the apps already on the phone to see for yourself; Mail, Safari, Weather, YouTube...etc. A fast network connection is crucial and will prove even more important with the appstore. Imagine trying to update 10/20 apps over the air...EDGE?...forget it. Not only this but there is a reason why the 8 gegs is being phased out. Now being able to download apps, this will eat some significant space out of the iPhone storage and thats why minimum storage will be bumped up in the base model.

A 3G iPhone is indeed BIG. It is like comparing what you can do with a dial up modem compared to ethernet. What you can do with the device changes completely just for the mere fact of giving it a faster network connection.

From my understanding of the situation this statement is misleading. The difference between EDGE and 3G will be noticable but isn't anything like the step up from dial-up to broadband. I had a 3G phone before the iPhone and live in an area with excellent coverage, and download speeds for me were just above what I get when connected to EDGE on the iPhone - it's a barely noticable difference in practice.

I think the current model has enough going for it that folks who bought now needn't kick themselves. Sure, you may cringe when Steve unveils the new model with larger drives, 3G, and feature x,y,z, but you can swoon when he describes all the cool things your iPhone can do with the new software update.

Besides, as a recent buyer myself, I don't think too many entirely new hardware features will be introduced - what with the SDK being in the wild, and all.

On the money.

And really, this day and age. Who's really that far away from a wifi connection?

I am, when I'm not at home or at a friend's house, or eating at Panera or Starbucks. Sometimes you want information on the go, and sometimes you'd like it to move a bit faster than (dial-up x 1.5). Let's not just blow off all the people who have been waiting (and waiting) for 3G before they pulled the trigger - there are a sizable number of us.

I have bought one iPhone yesterday, too ..... I'll upgrade to the new one anyway, but want one now ... :apple: Of course there is a new one available within one or two month, but then I can sell my phone and get a new one. It's a new world, just read about jailbreaking it and am looking forward to be a part of this community ... :apple:

10 reasons why I have buyer's remorse

It's not a bad decision. But here is why I wish I hadn't bought it:
1. Apple's bluetooth sucks (doesn't stay in your ear- another example of sacrificing form over function). The only bluetooth that I found worked well (and I tried several) was the Jawbone, but it has a design flaw- when you plug it into the charger, you will eventually break it when removing it from the charger. So now I don't use a bluetooth
2. When syncing my calendar, after daylight savings time, everything is off by an hour. Apple online support has a solution for this for Mac users, but unfortunately I use Windows at work.
3. Try looking up a contact name when driving. It is an accident waiting to happen. I have over 2000 contacts and first thing you do is touch the letter of their (in my case first name) and then have to keep scrolling until you find it.
4. Text messaging archiving sucks because it stores the entire thread of every conversation sorted by each person you text. In other words you can't just delete one conversation, but keep others with a particular person.
5. Your notes aren't transferred when synching.
6. Typing is a pain. Once I learned with some modicum of success how to touch the letter I want, then I constantly fight the stupid suggestions that pop up when typing a word. If I accidently hit the spacebar it puts in some word I didn't want. Also, because the phone is so small / narrow, I can't hold it while typing with my thumbs, so I have to use one finger and it is much slower this way.
7. You can't send a photograph via a text message. On my Treo, I could actually email a photo, and I never even set up the email function.
8. The alert on the calendar option only gives you the following choices: 5, 15 or 30 minutes; 1 or 2 hours or 1 or 2 days. Sometimes I like 7 days, or 4 hours etc., depending on the appointment or the project.
9. The camera is pretty weak. I won't even address the fact that it won't video.
10. Eventually I will have to send the stupid thing off to get a new battery.

I just bought mine a week ago and love it. Sure, I see things I wish were different, but I always see that with everything in life. I would love to be able to send images in a text msg. This is my first cell phone. I hate the thought of them. This one certainly doesn't make using it as a phone a great experience. It's hard to hear/talk on. The contacts scrolling is aggravating. Ah, well. I was hoping to wait for the "next generation", but need beat me.

IF a new model comes out in a couple of months, how does one swap out for the new model? Go to the Apple store & get walked through it?

I'm always away from an unlocked wifi connection, but the iphone lets me do most things anyway. One of the things that surprised me.

I always find this odd:

And really, this day and age. Who's really that far away from a wifi connection?

I find myself far away from accessible and/or free wifi all the time. I make great use of my 3G card with my laptop (and it is really fast BTW). Most airports are still t-mobile or other closed networks. The iPhone rocks even without 3G of course, but 3G feels kind of like the minimum this day and age.

10. Eventually I will have to send the stupid thing off to get a new battery.

There are only two of these that I will address.

I am a (happy) windows user and a (happy) iPhone user and to fix your problem you must insure that:

1) iPhone: Settings, General, Date & Time is set to: Set Automatically-ON, Time Zone Support-ON, and Time Zone is one that is in your area.
2) Computer: Under your Date and Time properties, Time Zone...that you have checked the box that says: Automatically adjust clock for daylight savings changes.
3) Microsoft Outlook: Tools, Options, Calender Options, Time Zone...insure that you have a match on the time zone selected for all 3 areas and also insure that Adjust for daylight savings time is checked.

With all 3 areas in sync you should no longer have a 1 hour lag and when daylight savings ends...do not change anything.

In regards to your battery...IMHO I think you replace your iPhone with a Generation 2 or 3 long before you have the need to replace your battery, unless you fully drain your battery 100% daily and then a 100% recharge and even then it will last you well over 1 year.

400/365=1.1 years at the above use.

"Charge Cycles
A properly maintained iPhone battery is designed to retain up to 80% of its original capacity at 400 full charge and discharge cycles. You may choose to replace your battery when it no longer holds sufficient charge to meet your needs."

http://www.apple.com/batteries/iphone.html

I highly doubt you have this much use so it should last you in excess of two years, thus my statement...you will have a new iPhone long before you replace the battery.

Hope all of this helps you enjoy your iPhone a little more.

To the OP...IMHO you are the only one that can make the decision of weather it was a good or bad idea. If you are enjoying it and using it to its fullest advantage then you probably did the right thing. If you are having buyers remorse then maybe you should take it back for the refund and wait. However, the release and when and what it comes with are ALL conjecture and you could end up waiting a very long time for a new version to come out. One thing nice about this product is that every quarter seems to bring a software update of some sort and it kind of "refreshes" the current product that you have. No other phone can or has done this before. You stated yourself that 3G was limited in your area, so why wait? IMO 3G and a phone GPS are over-rated anyway and will not be the sole reason for me to upgrade.

Good Luck and Enjoy what you have now!

I just traveled to Sacramento CA from Louisville KY and had stops in Phoenix, AZ and Chicago Ohara...and every single airport and open wifi that my iPhone accessed. With being in airports small to major and all had wifi, I find it hard to believe part of your post. I do however, agree with the rest of what you stated.

I finally broke down and bought an iPhone yesterday. :) A number of factors finally coalesced into the purchase of an 8 gig iPhone with an AT&T contract. Although like I have previously posted I'm not totally convinced that a new iPhone is coming in June, I still have a couple of reservations. I feel like Apple isn't going to launch the App Store and firmware 2.0 with a new revision of the device. But the case for a release is plausible. I'm conflicted.

I absolutely love the iPhone, though, no confliction on that! I'm not particularly impressed with the 3G coverage in MI, and honestly, 3G has grown very slowly. My main concern is a new feature set that's going to leave me wishing I had waited. I hate playing that game, though. I waited so long for the benefits to outweigh the cost for me, and I don't particularly want to wait any longer!

What do you all think?

Absolutely NOT . . . . Hey, you now have a 3 inch screen instead of a 2.8 inch screen :D

Yes you were dumb. Very dumb. Retarded in fact.

3g iPhone will be out in June. That's less then two months away.

Edge network sucks. I didn't realize how bad it was until I bought an iPhone last summer. It's really embarrassing how slow it is.

lol...EVERYONE will be trying to sell their 1st gen iPhones when the 3G is released. You'll have to give it away...lol

Nice of you to read his whole statement and then belittle him for something he doesnt care about...now who is dumb/retarded?

Luckily I got this iphone for half of ebay price in my country. Anyway, if I have waisted all this money, I'll enjoy this two month having a nice overpriced camera :)

I've stopped in a lot more airports than that, and yes, a good number of them use T-Mobile or Boingo. Even some that were previously free (Detroit) have switched to pay. Also, the free networks don't always work. Albuquerque has free Wi-Fi, but the last three or four times I was there, I (and others nearby) couldn't connect.

I bought one too

I caved in the other day and bought a new 8 gig iphone from o2. It is a great device, and if the new one adds more memory, 3g and GPS, then I will probably get one of those as well. I really do need to phones because I have various sims from other countries because I travel a lot. I will jailbreak the 2.5g and use it for travel.
